I don’t need to buy for a newborn baby, do I...?

My first baby is due in December. It hadn’t really occurred to me to get them a gift until a friend of mine asked this week what I was getting them. I said I wasn’t getting them anything and she was horrified - she said I’ll never get back the chance to buy my baby a present for their first Christmas.

Is she right? When I am doped up on hormones and sleep deprivation will I suddenly regret not buying them a ‘first Christmas’ gift? Or is that a completely mad thing to worry about for a baby who will be days old when Christmas comes...?

Oh and a stocking too so he has one for all the years to come.

Slightly different to others but my baby is due mid November and we’re planning to buy him basically his main first years worth of toys for Christmas. A few good, wooden open ended toys that will grow with him (Grapat) as well as some clutching toys, books, sensory bits etc. Hoping it’ll do him until first birthday for the most part!

Partly because Christmas is a huge deal to me/my family, partly because I’ll haVe more money up to Christmas than I will all next year as I only get SMP, and lastly because we’d like to foster a trend of most main toys being bought for Christmas and Birthday (where possible, them both being where they are in the year we’ll probably have to get a few bits in summer too)

You don't have to if you don't want to and it doesn't make you a bad mum! Mine was 5 weeks at Christmas. He got a toothbrush and weaning spoons Grin

A cute outfit? A baby toy? My son has a teddy he got for his first christmas says baby,s first christmas which is quite cute.

sitckmansladylove · 31/08/2020 21:36

My youngest was born in December and I bought a few little things to open (book, rattle, CD of lullabies, teddy)
Mainly for the photos Grin and I am glad I did as he asked me last year what did santy get when he was a baby

My first baby is also due in December - I’d love to pick up a couple of personalised bits but we’ve got no idea what we will name him till he’s here!

I’m loving the idea of a little stocking, book, bauble and outfit. Depending on how close to Christmas he is born, we might get some personalised blocks too.

My partner was a December baby, he's 32 this year and still torments he's mum every year that nobody brought him anything for he's first Christmas

surreygirl1987 · 31/08/2020 22:03

My baby was 10 weeks old. His presents were more for me than him though hopefully nice keepsakes for him one day. I got him a beautiful wooden bauble with Sam's first Christmas written on it. I'll be doing the same for his little brother this year! He also got a couple of books but if I'd thought of it at the time I'd have got him a beautiful copy of Twas the night before Christmas

bathorshower · 31/08/2020 22:10

I don't think we did - it's telling that I can't remember! DD was due just before Christmas, and I expected her to be overdue (and born afterwards). After some fun health issues and a stay in hospital, she was delivered a week early, but still less than two weeks before Christmas. By Christmas itself I was more interested in trying to work out which way was up than what gift I should have got for her. I don't think it's scarred her....

My little one will be 3m old, we have just put aside some toys we got or were given, and I know grandparents are planning 1 or 2 bits. We dug out my eldests 1st xmas blanket and babygrows for her to use. Only thing I might get is a 1st xmas ornament for her as my son had some x

I realised I needed to wrap up a few things for my secondborn so firstborn didn't worry about 🎅 forgetting him. He got some toys that dc1 had outgrown that had been stored for a while, and a baby sleeping bag as we didn't have one in the correct size and tog. And dummies, as dc1 had never had dummies, she was bemused by them, but they were definitely dc2s favourite thing. For a firstborn I'd go with books (we had enough to start a library as my entire family thinks that is appropriate kid present). Just a couple of normal board books, or 'the girl / boy who lost his / her name' if you are wanting something more keep sak-y.
I wouldn't spend loads unless you needed to anyway, and no 'baby's first tooth / curl' things that you will have to find a home for then be grossed out by the contents.

inappropriateraspberry · 31/08/2020 22:29

Mine were both 9 months old at their first Christmases. I think we got them one thing each. They'll get tons of stuff from family and friends, and it could be Christmas, a birthday or just a Wednesday in June for all they know.

inappropriateraspberry · 31/08/2020 22:31

It also depends if you're into keepsakes for all baby's 'firsts.' We're not bothered, plus if it has first on it, it can't really be used again!!

God no, I just thought buying a few week old baby a gift was a waste of cash. Buy yourself some lovely PJs or posh shower gel instead. As a new mum you deserve it

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 31/08/2020 22:35

I’m a November baby. My first Christmas my mum and dad bought me a pyjama case that was on my bed my entire childhood. It’s a nice memory, and as a child I loved hearing how it had been my first Christmas gift. Ds2 was an October baby, but obviously with two older siblings he had to be included too. So yes, it doesn’t need to be extravagant, but it’s a nice thing to do.

utterlynutty · 31/08/2020 22:40

DC2 was only 2 days old on their first Christmas. We didn't have a present for them.We hastily wrapped a soft toy mainly so DC1 could see Santa had left a present for DC2.

OhamIreally · 31/08/2020 22:52

I gave mine the gift of life. That was enough for the first year.

tbfitwasntme · 31/08/2020 23:19

My youngest was only 8 weeks old during his first Christmas and we did purchase gifts for him. We got him a pram toy and a baby walker and clothes. Things he needed now and later on. We would have bought them all eventually for him but it was nice to see things under the tree with his name on it.

Mrsfussypants1 · 01/09/2020 06:38

I'm a grandmother now, but when our November born daughter had her first christmas we bought her a mothercare highchair, a teddy and a hard back copy of the night before Christmas book. It was a lovely edition which has been passed down to granddaughter. For our granddaughters first Christmas (she was 6mnths old though) we bought her 2 jelly cat bunnies (so glad we bought a spare) and had a beautiful white toy box made with her name and bunting on. I rea,ly like buying a first special bauble too as a keepsake.

mylittlesandwich · 01/09/2020 06:41

We have stockings with out names on them so we got DS one to match. I put a few things in it like some muslins and a 1st Christmas onesie but it was definitely for our benefit rather than his.

Ladybyrd · 01/09/2020 07:03

Slightly different to others but my baby is due mid November and we’re planning to buy him basically his main first years worth of toys for Christmas.

Same here - bought in the Black Friday sales. DS was born in early September though so a bit older. I can't imagine getting him nothing at all. If I'd just given birth, it probably wouldn't be top of my list of priorities to dash out Christmas shopping, but there are 4 months left to go. Not that he'd know anything about it mind you.

Icequeen01 · 01/09/2020 07:46

My DS was born early December but we didn't get out of SCUBU until 17th December. We bought him a posh teddy with his date of birth engraved on his foot and that was it. He was completely spoilt by the family though.

Icequeen01 · 01/09/2020 07:47

Not "engraved" I meant embroidered. The teddy wasn't made out of gold or anything 😀

micc · 01/09/2020 08:02

I'm due end of October and I already have a 4 year old DD. I think I will wrap up a new teether and dummies Haha i have kept all of her toys from when she was a baby, so maybe I'll wrap some of them up too so my DD doesnt think the baby has been naughty!! Its mainly for her as she is just starting to properly understand and get really excited for Christmas, I want her to have fun with the baby. I might get her to pick it out a new sleep suit or something :)
Dont feel pressured too though! Do what ever you want.. like PP if you are having a baby shower you will probably get loads of stuff. I bet your family members will get it something too :)

FelicityPike · 01/09/2020 08:11

I would.
