Difficult house to decorate...

Well maybe not, but I love decorations ! Looking for some ideas.

We have a normal sized modern square house. No mantel piece and no bannister / hallway to decorate.

It's not a minimalist house (but it's also not full of lots of things either) has lots of windows including a wall of windows across the living room and dining room.

This is what we currently do:

  • Christmas tree
  • lit tree and reindeer in garden
  • glass cloche with Christmas scene on dining table
  • lots of paper hanging decorations in the play room
  • wreath on the door
  • Christmas cards stuck onto the kitchen cabinets

Any ideas for more ?! I am sure this sounds quite a lot already (including to DH) but I love a bit of Christmas ! I'm thinking of:

  • LED tape on the stairs
  • wreaths on internal doors too
  • snowflake mobile over the stairs

Lights are my go-to thing. I have a very different house to yours (old, high ceilings, uneven floors & walls, not enough sockets) but we don't have a fireplace / mantle in the living room or a banister either. Instead of adding more decs, I just put lights everywhere - so I have a set that hang along the front of the Welsh dresser in the dining room, the bookcase in the kitchen etc.

I also add a Christmas cushion or 2 and a festive fleece on the back of the sofa in the living room.

As I'm going to be WFH at least a few days per week from now on, I'm also intending to decorate the spare room / my office this year - plan is to put up lights and possibly a tiny tree.
I also want to see if I can get away with a wreath on an inside door or 2 - not sure DH will cope with this though!

Also, can't do this here as DH has pleaded for 1 Christmas free room which is our bedroom, but if I were you, I'd be adding Christmas bedding / throws / cushions there Xmas Smile

You could take down the odd picture and hang a wreath on the wall in it’s place. Last Christmas TKMaxx had lots of beautiful artificial wreaths in stock, all sorts of sizes.

I know what you mean about the bannister thing, ours goes up from the hall and turns around through 180 deg, and the bannister isn’t suited really to being decorated as it’s just thick planks of painted wood.

What about a vase of seasonal foliage somewhere, doesn’t have to be fresh, you can get floristry supplies of fake foliage and flowers from the Range or Dunelm, or garden centres, a few stems with glittery bits and pine cones on wires, fake berries etc.

Last Christmas I’ve been converted to LED candles, church style pillar ones and also tealights. The pillar ones have a real wax exterior so look quite nice, and the tealights are great in little festive lanterns or holders. Plus they are safe with little ones (and our cat.)

I have a similar house I think (mid terrace though). We do very similar but I also put a lot of table decorations out like snowglobes, wooden snowmen etc. And we hang some stuff from the curtain poles :) x

Oh and those snowflake sticker things on windows x

Oooo great suggestions I need more lights I think ! Also like the idea of a Christmas throw and more snow globes of course !

The Range had some lovely garlands last year. Real looking ones. Some pre-lit, some plain. Not too expensive.

I put mine on my fireplaces and bannisters but found them too bulky to pack away so for the rest of the year I've had them on my plate rail in the kitchen.

If you have windowsills they'd look lovely just sitting on them with maybe hurricane lanterns with candles for a bit extra.

I live in a fairly modern, small house and found the lack of a mantelpiece frustrating on the Christmas decoration front - they look so nice with cards on and little ornaments. If you have space and this is the sort of thing you're after, Lidl have sold them for the last two years around November time. Cheap and cheerful at about £40 (put it together yourself) and the front parts open up for storage.
