Takeaway for dinner??

Has anyone ever had a takeaway for Christmas dinner?
If yes what was it? Was it strange going against the 'normal' dinner ideas?

Not a takeaway but one year we just had buffet party food instead. We all agreed it wasn’t right and that Christmas needs a roast!!

JustanotherTuesday · 30/07/2020 21:27

One year we had the roast on Christmas Eve and a buffet on Christmas Day .We went out on Boxing Day for a carvery in the evening. I liked not having to cook a big meal but it didn't seem like Christmas Day at all. We really missed not having a roast.

CoffeeRunner · 30/07/2020 21:29

It depends where you live maybe but here you wouldn’t get a takeaway open on Christmas Day.

If you don’t celebrate Christmas then fine. But it wouldn’t be for me.

MummyLaLa88 · 30/07/2020 21:33

Me and my husbands first Christmas together alone we had a Thai take away - it was the least stressful Christmas ever - but also did not feel "Christmassy"!
I will be doing the same thing this year as we are expecting on Christmas day!

bigbluebus · 30/07/2020 21:34

I know a family who have an indian takeaway on Christmas day as one of them has to go out to work in the afternoon.

AriettyHomily · 30/07/2020 21:37

No but we've decided this year if it all goes tits up re corona and we're locked down well have McDonald's if they are still delivering...

Lou573 · 30/07/2020 22:21

We do! Veggie family and I’m not interested in spending Christmas Day in the kitchen cooking a vegetarian roast for 2 kids who are pretty uninterested. Would rather spend the day playing with the children and having a nice walk so we order a Christmas curry in the evening. Dh and I would enjoy a veggie roast but not enough to spend my Christmas in the kitchen!

Timeforabiscuit · 30/07/2020 22:25

We visited relatives when I was a teenager, adults had decided to have an Indian takeaway for Christmas dinner. Mum hated turkey anyway, so it didn't feel like any sacrifice but drunk relatives, no decorations, and unfamiliar surroundings made it

Worst
Christmas
Ever

Sadly no takeaways open round here on xmas day. But when it was just me and DH, we'd skip the roast and have a seafood platter instead. Smoked salmon and champagne always makes me feel festive.

Or just get all bung it in the oven stuff for the meal. Turkey crown, pre-prepped veg etc. That way you get a roast but with minimal clean up.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 03/08/2020 16:43

Our local Indian restaurant is open on Christmas Day, I'm sure they would do a takeaway but maybe would need to be pre-booked?

Bluntness100 · 03/08/2020 16:49

We have been to an Indian restaurant for Xmas day, and had the roast on Boxing Day, we were with friends and it was due to work schedule. It still felt Christmassy to be honest, as everything else was festive, from the Prosecco to the music to the decorations.

I don’t think I’d choose to do it without friends, and I think a takeaway would be maybe more anti climatic if I’m honest, especially if you normally get one every couple of weeks.

netflixismysidehustle · 03/08/2020 16:53

We have a takeaway on Xmas Eve.

A takeaway on Xmas Day is no different to eating in a restaurant imo

BlingLoving · 03/08/2020 16:55

It might be strange, but if it's what you want, then I'd go for it. We don't do turkey because frankly, no one in our extended families like turkey. Occasionally if I mention this to people they're outraged. Which I just find weird!

GreyGardens88 · 03/08/2020 16:57

One of my dreams is to one day spend Christmas alone and just do something like make myself a pie or a massive pasta bake and just chill with copious amounts of alcohol and netflix. Buy my own presents to open on the day. Sadly I don't think it's ever going to happen

Quackersandcheese3 · 03/08/2020 17:07

I think you could . I know lots of people who do. It’s not for me personally coz I love xmas food !

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 04/08/2020 11:13

Last year I was recovering from surgery the week before so wasnt up to cooking (dh is a terrible cook) so we did pizza's, wedges, garlic bread. It was amazing. No mountain of washing up, no spending hours prepping and checking it. I loved it and we are doing it again this year, I didnt feel stressed and I spent time with the girls not in and out of the kitchen.
There's plenty of time over the festive period to do a full on roast without trying to squeeze it into an already busy and chaotic day 😂

Bananaman123 · 09/08/2020 22:56

Indian takeaway a few times, prefer to traditioal dinner and more time with family rather than cooking

Elphaba17 · 10/08/2020 08:45

We had buffet food one year and it was really nice and relaxed but we always seem to cave at the last minute and do a traditional dinner just because it's what we have always done. What we do agree though is that the dinner is not a big part of Christmas or what makes it special to our family so maybe we will break old habits this year.

NoWordForFluffy · 10/08/2020 18:31

@Elphaba17, we've done 3-4 years of buffet. We love it (and the kids - 6 and 7 this year - demand it now)! Xmas Grin

PhantomErik · 10/08/2020 18:55

I'm very tempted to get a takeaway on CEve this year but really like having a roast on CDay.

Vegetarian & vegan household so maybe it's easier.

Easy buffet on Boxing Day. Pizza, chips, garlic bread, salad, olives etc.

Oh I love that, new traditions being started for sure!

You know the more I think about it the more determined I am to stick to my guns this year and just go with the buffet. The kids don't even really like a roast dinner so will be over the moon. And there is nothing more fun than food shopping for a buffet- I can resist nothing lol

NoWordForFluffy · 10/08/2020 20:32

Yes. I've never under-catered the buffet! I just love choices. 🐷😂

The4ks · 10/08/2020 20:40

Had a Chinese takeaway a couple of years ago, pre-booked. Was fantastic.

However I'm vegetarian and kids a bit fussy so only one who bothers about turkey is DP.

Just lovely spending extra time with the kids instead of in the kitchen.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 11/08/2020 16:00

We did a buffet last year and it was fab. Just me and DH and DS and it meant we could spend the whole day relaxing and playing with DS rather than cooking.

This year will probably be traditional as if all goes to plan we will be having a family Christmas with all the ILs.

LadyofMisrule · 18/08/2020 10:52

I had a year when I was alone at Xmas. I got my local pizzeria to part-cook me my favourite pizza, and I finished it off on Xmas day. I didn't speak to anyone, and spent the whole day lounging. It was bliss.
