Bath Christmas market cancelled

I knew it was very likely as it is so jam packed that there isn't a millimeter between people, nevermind a meter but I'm really disappointed.
It is a tradition for us to go there by train, have a lovely lunch, do the normal shops, listen to the choir in the square and then go to the market just as it's getting dark.
It's going to be a very long year without these little traditions to look forward to Sad.

Don’t panic! The council have said

*"So there will still be an exciting programme of events in the run up to Christmas."

Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) Council, Visit Bath, Bath BID and Bath Festivals are working to put together a four-week festive programme.

It will include dressing the city, music, cultural events, street stalls and artisan food.”*

So pretty much a Christmas market 🤣

Shame but it's hardly worth getting upset about. (I am very negative though about Christmas traditions and build up.) Much better it's cancelled than the alternative. Staying healthy is far more important.

CrazyBaubles · 24/07/2020 08:13

I get it OP, Bath Christmas market is lovely and it's a shame it's not going ahead this year. Obviously we understand the reasons but still, this year isn't going to be quite the same

SellFridges · 24/07/2020 08:18

I cannot wait for them to cancel the Birmingham one. It’s a total menace, makes me avoid the city centre for two months of the year, and at the best of times is full of idiots who don’t know how to respect other people’s space.

I understand about the loss of tradition, but really there’s no reason why you can’t still go on the train to Bath, take in the Christmas lights and have a nice meal. If things are still going better then there may even be choirs etc.

BumpkinSpiceBatty · 24/07/2020 08:27

I'm not upset about them cancelling it, I understand and fully agree with the decision.
I'm just disappointed that is a break in tradition in a already very changed year.

I totally understand OP (and as an aside never understand those who hate Christmas spending anytime at all on the Christmas board Hmm).

In a difficult and horrible year with very little to look forward to, it is awful that Christmas wont be the same either.

I understand why things are being cancelled, before people jump on me for not caring about the virus' but it is perfectly acceptable to understand why and still be upset.

I am certain I will be missing ideal christmas show, carols at Royal Albert Hall and the few markets I visit and I am also sad about it.

Thanks @FilthyforFirth Smile

Ah , just read this .
DH and I are booked on a trip ( Designer Outlet + Bath Christmas Market ) with an overnight hotel stay .

Need to contact the tour company ......see what's going to happen

GreyGardens88 · 25/07/2020 09:17

I bet the locals are relieved

FredaFrogspawn · 25/07/2020 09:18

Sheds of shit. Made it impossible to live there for weeks.

jay55 · 25/07/2020 09:22

When I worked in Bath I hated the market. My office had windows to the high street and so the noise and extra buskers were super annoying.
The extra time to get to the station and even more crowded trains at the end of the day were super annoying, why do tourists always try to leave during rush hour and not sit and enjoy their mulled wine and hog roast or whatever until it's quieter.

At least it was only for a short time frame and some people made money.

treeeeemendous · 27/07/2020 20:40

This saddens me, not because I had any intention of going but the very fact that it's just one more thing that people will have been looking forward to that's cancelled. Our town has already cancelled its fireworks display and it's Christmas market too.

I think Christmas may feel quite different this year Sad

FredaFrogspawn · 28/07/2020 05:51

A dip in consumer opportunities won’t spoil Christmas -it might help people to focus on relationships rather than purchasing.

merrygoround51 · 28/07/2020 07:30

I think @FredaFrogspawn it’s more about the tradition of going into the market than actually buying from it

katmarie · 28/07/2020 07:35

My mum, sister and I were planning to go this year, not to do shopping as such, but as a day out together away from our kids and stuff. We don't get many days out together. I get what you're saying op, its just another disappointment in what has been a crappy year in many ways. We will find something else to do instead, I'm sure, and hope things will be better next year.
