What do I do? Can I peel and chop veg and potatoes and leave in water until tomorrow?

“D”p had walked out. I’ve got no car, haven’t done the proper shop, have hardly any money, we’re all devastated, and now I’m going to be tipped over the edge by some fucking veg!!!!!!

Also I have a long sausage or pork sage and onion stuffing, so I cook it whole? Do I cut it into rounds first?! Fml I don’t know why I’m even bothering!!!

Im no help OP, but I have also wondered if I can prep the veg the night before and it be Okay,
Sorry you're "D" P left. Have you got friends /family around you?

Creativebee · 24/12/2019 12:16

And breathe... I know it’s all overwhelming but don’t over think it. I normally boil and chafe the potatoes in the evening, cover them in cling film and stick them in the oven on Christmas Day. The rest of your veg you can cut and leave in water.
Don’t let the veg get to you, I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time and hope it gets better for you but remember why you’re doing this, I’m assuming you have DC? Keep up the courage for them. Sending you hugs. Flowers

Today, peel potatoes & boil for 7 minutes. Roll them in butter or oil while still hot, using the tin in which you will cook them. Put in fridge until tomorrow. Roast. Cook pork sausage meat as a roll. It will be fine. So sorry you are going through this.

Sorry you're having a crap time Thanks

With mine I've done what I can:

  • pigs in blankets rolled and cooked ready to be thrown in a dish in the oven to warm
  • sprouts topped (bottomed?) and crossed, bacon chopped and ready to be fried together
  • carrots peeled and cut
  • cabbage shredded along with apples and spices ready to go in the slow cooker on timer tomorrow morning

Meat, parsnips, broccoli and potatoes I'll do tomorrow, but I think I read somewhere on here you can par boil the potatoes, leave them to steam off the moisture and shake to fluff up, and leave overnight in a tray in the fridge ready so they can dry - makes for really crispy easy roasties. Someone else might come along and confirm though.

If all else fails, do what you can and crack open the wine 🍷Xmas Grin

Honestly I’m just devastated right now. How can anybody, even the nastiest of people actually do this to a family? Because I have no car I won’t be able to get to any of my family and half of them are actually with him now in the pub so I’m clearly as meaningless to them as I am him. My mum has just brought me some shopping and I’m crying because I didn’t want aunt Bessie’s Yorkshire’s and I don’t know to make my own. I hate my life

You got this OP, you can do this, fuck him, you don't need him, you have us on here to guide you.

My DM used to prep all the veg and leave over night in a sauce pan of water, ready to turn on when needed.

Chewbecca · 24/12/2019 15:50

Sorry to hear this. If you have eggs (2), plain flour and milk, you can make your own v quickly & easily & they will be lovely.

Zofloramummy · 24/12/2019 16:00

Yep you can prep the veg and leave in pans ready.

Peel potatoes and parsnips and leave in a pan of cold water overnight. You need to leave them in water or the potatoes will go black.

Peel carrots, put in a pan of water overnight. Prepare cauliflower and broccoli, leave in the fridge overnight.

In the morning, tip the water out of the pan with the potatoes and parsnips in it. Put fresh water in the pan and bring to the boil to par boil the potatoes and parsnips ready for roasting.
