I need a gingerbread house kit for the kids to assemble on Christmas Eve.

I am usually much more organised - where would I get on tomorrow??

Also any hints for Christmas baking for Santa to keep a 7 and 10 year old occupied for a couple of hours???

I bought mine from Aldi £4.99

Comes with icing and candy. Just requires assembling and glueing

No idea if it's any good as we are doing it tomorrow!

Dollymixture22 · 22/12/2019 12:17

Haven’t even thought of Aldi - thank you 😊

We had mini houses, three to a pack from Tiger! Also John Lewis normally has them.

Ilovewillow · 22/12/2019 12:44

This is the mini ones although the assemble is that of a 6 yr old so make if it what you will! Grin

Could you make your own? BBC good food have a great recipe, with a template. It's great fun and we do it every year. The kids love it.

LoisLittsLover · 22/12/2019 12:48

Our one is from lidl and worked really well

NotSoThinLizzy · 22/12/2019 12:57

B and m have some too

Yoollyball · 22/12/2019 12:58

Costco are very good imo - they actually taste delicious too.

Dollymixture22 · 22/12/2019 13:17

I don’t Think I will have time to back the biscuits, let them cool and then construct the house. It’s for an activity at a Christmas party for the little ones.

I got a great one in Aldi which is already assembled, in my experience getting them to stick together is a challenge so this is great! It comes with sweets too although I've bought a few more as well.

mintich · 22/12/2019 15:50

The aldi one is great but I'd buy more icing to decorate it as there ismt much in there

AndromedaPerseus · 22/12/2019 16:00

IKEA ones are great an£ taste fab and buy a bucket of royal icing to stick the pieces with. Put electric tea lights inside for an even better effect

Candlesonthetable · 22/12/2019 16:34

We make a Lidl one every year and love it! We use toothpicks to hold it up inside until we 'glue' it with icing. Then we take them out.

Muddlingalongalone · 22/12/2019 16:37

Lidl £4.99.
Easier than our pathetic attempt with the Ikea one last year but the Christmas tree is precarious.

Nanna50 · 22/12/2019 16:45

Ah toothpicks, is that the secret, building gingerbread houses has nearly broken me on more then one occasion Blush

Funkyslippers · 22/12/2019 17:02

Sorry to ask what might be a stupid question but do you actually end up eating it? We were given one last year and I ended up putting it in a trifle!

MoonlightBonnet · 22/12/2019 17:05

The M and S one comes with a tray with slots in which keeps it together while it dries. Makes the whole thing much much easier.

anyoldname76 · 22/12/2019 17:32

I bought the Asda one, my children have already assembled and eaten them Xmas Grin

Muddlingalongalone · 22/12/2019 17:59

We will eat it in PJs on Christmas Eve with Hot Choc after church whilst reading the night before Christmas.
The rest will go hard & end up in the bin

NickMarlow · 22/12/2019 18:04

We've just done the Aldi one. There was enough icing and sweets to to occupy my 4yo and 18mo but for older kids I'd get some extra. The house itself looks good though.

Booberella9 · 22/12/2019 18:04

Look for cheapy biscuits that are rectangular. Buy a load. Buy a load of decorations from the baking aisle. Mix up very thick water icing for glue. Glue together in a house shape. Glue on decorations. Done, no baking required!

HermioneWeasley · 22/12/2019 18:05

Toothpicks! Genius!

I always buy one from ikea

Candlesonthetable · 22/12/2019 18:11

Yep, toothpicks are the construction secret! Also make the royal icing with icing sugar and egg white rather than buying royal icing ready made - it sets rock hard v quickly! The lidl one has the right amount of icing sugar for one egg white.

Barbararara · 22/12/2019 18:39

One egg white to about 230g icing sugar (add the sugar gradually). I stick two pieces together and prop them up with something. Let dry hard. Then the other two pieces are propped against the first two. Let dry hard. Then hold the roof on for a minute or two.

The result is a teensy bit wonky but fine for a basic house.

UndertheCedartree · 22/12/2019 18:58

I saw them in Asda.

We have just baked shortbread 'men' and turned them upside to make reindeer.
