Minimalist gift for a four year old girl

My cousin and her four year old live in a small house and has complained a few times that her mum keeps buying large and unnecessary presents for her daughter.

All three are coming to my mum’s for Christmas. I don’t really know the four year old that well and the handful of times we’ve all been together she sticks to her mum like glue and doesn’t engage with anyone else. So I don’t know her personality, likes or interests I have asked my cousin but she has said not to worry about getting anything but I’ll feel bad as she always gets me really thoughtful gifts.

So if you have recommendations for a small gift that won’t clutter their home any suggestions (except plastic) would be welcome

Pens and a colouring book? Stickers. Activity book (labrynths, dot to dot etc). Sparkly things for her hair.

nancy75 · 20/12/2019 08:19

Books? There are loads of really lovely books for that age group or colouring books with pencils that she can use on the day at your mums?

nitgel · 20/12/2019 08:21

Really nice, good quality colouring pens or pencils and a sketch book maybe?

ememem84 · 20/12/2019 08:23

Depending on budget can you do a voucher for an activity or something? So it’s a treat but no clutter?

Failing that as others have said colouring books pencils etc.

Art set
Craft kit
Character pyjamas
Bath toy
Books

As long as you’re not buying something that will take up lots of space you should be fine but if you’re concerned a gift card for a toy or book store with a little chocolate Santa should be safe enough.

happychange · 20/12/2019 08:25

Definitely books
I hate tat but always ask for books

jacqelinedaniels · 20/12/2019 08:25

I just bought a 4yo girl with an eco conscious mum a gift of Tap Tap Art, the wooden shapes you hammer into a cork board with little nails. I remember enjoying that as a kid

HairsprayBabe · 20/12/2019 08:27

Fuzzy felts or a wooden puzzle
Small, easy to store and reusable Xmas Smile

KittenVsXmastree · 20/12/2019 08:34

A trip (or annual pass, depending on the price) to somewhere local. Soft play, farm sort of place?

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 20/12/2019 08:35

Kapla blocks?

ThisIsAllaMooPoint · 20/12/2019 08:37

Thanks all. She has a trunk full of colouring books and pens. I’m liking the wooden puzzles idea. Maybe a puzzle book.

Get a puzzle by all means (Ravensburger are great) but please please don’t get a puzzle book. You can’t tidy it away without doing each puzzle and they are the bane of many parents’ lives!

Books or book tokens so she can choose herself
Jigsaws
Activity book
Pencils
Children accessories, small bag, hair things, sparkly costume jewellery
Voucher to buy an outfit in the sale
Stuffed toy, small like a TY baby
Cinema voucher to see Frozen 2

@jacqelinedaniels That sounds excellent! I think I’ll get the Tap tap art thank you Smile

Puzzle books are a nightmare, I would avoid that if it's not too late!

Depending on your budget what about vouchers for a local ice cream place so she could go out for a treat with her mum?

TheVanguardSix · 20/12/2019 09:09

A Red Riding hood doll/hand puppet plus a nice edition of the story itself, would be my suggestion.

Nan0second · 20/12/2019 09:09

Water magic painting books
Those scratch off art pictures
Melissa and Doug have some lovely small craft gifts (stained glass pictures, sticker by number, mess free glitter things) which are lovely

fluffyjumper · 20/12/2019 09:18

Craft kit
A nice party dress
Board game
DVD
Slippers
Grow your own flower kit
Nice bedding
Puzzles

ChristmasCroissant · 20/12/2019 09:22

Agree with the PP that suggested a ticket or season ticket for a day out.

floccolibrolets · 20/12/2019 09:22

If you were my cousin, I'd LOVE you to text me and say you'd like to contribute to an experience for my 4yo and ask for suggestions for what might suit so you can make her a nice voucher. Even better if you gave me an idea of budget to avoid awkwardnesss.

I too have a small flat and a mum who thinks that the size of a gift must be directly proportionate to the love she has for the recipient.

floccolibrolets · 20/12/2019 09:24

(My 4yo's favourite gifts from her birthday and Christmas last year were a map of a zoo with a note promising her a trip there with Grandad; and some fake tickets promising a day at a local attraction with her uncle).

Lweji · 20/12/2019 09:49

If you'd be ok arranging it with her mother, tickets for a children's show? No clutter at all. Grin

17caterpillars1mouse · 21/12/2019 20:32

Usbourne sticker book. My dd loves the dress up ones, we've had fairy's, princesses, puppies. All loved here
