MIL...in 70s, Has plenty of money, goes shopping lots, buys whatever she wants. Our budget isn't huge (£25). Likes wine and reading books but we always buy those for birthday, so we are stuck. Any ideas??

Bunch of flowers. Don't overthink it!

Calendar with family photos?

A nice cashmere scarf. There is one on john lewis for £17.50 x

justdoityourself · 19/12/2019 19:10

Cashmere scarf not a bad shout actually, she shops a lot but is a bit tight so wouldn't buy something luxurious!
Flowers won't work as she is going away for Christmas.

Champagne in a nice bag.

Or nothing.

justdoityourself · 19/12/2019 19:13

Haha at nothing. She actually puts very little thought into anyone else's gifts so not sure why I'm worrying about it!

Can someone link to the scarf please

Ragwort · 19/12/2019 19:22

My parents are similar, genuinely don’t want anything, they do like charity gifts, although I know not everyone does. Last few years I’ve given them ‘Crisis at Christmas Meals’.

justdoityourself · 19/12/2019 19:22

@peachypetite cheapest cashmere scarf I can see online at JL is £60, maybe they have a clearance in some stores...

Anything here any good?

HeyMicky · 19/12/2019 21:38

A scented ceramic disc. Can be used in a wardrobe, or in the cloakroom, or even in car. The smell can be topped up with oils or perfume once the original scent fades. It feels quite special for the price

For people like this I think the key is to buy something they wouldn't necessarily buy for themselves or even know about. And/or get something personal.

So, eg, if she's a big coffee drinker, research super good coffee beans etc then order something from a specialist shop.

If she's a good MIL/Grandmother, then something personal from grandchildren can work. A photo frame with a lovely picture of the grandchildren or get the kids down to a pottery place to paint her a plate she can display etc.
