Christmas Eve Meal- something special but what?

Hello!
We’ve had a bit of a change around to our usual Christmas arrangements this year and I’ll be cooking a ham on boxing day. I usually do ham on Christmas Eve and it’s a lovely special meal. So I’m a bit stumped for what to do this year. Nothing heavy bearing in mind the roast the next day. So my question is, what special meals do you have on Christmas Eve? I need some inspiration!
Xmas Smile

Thanks in advance! Xx

We have a big Christmas Eve buffet every year, it’s my favourite meal of the year. Half a salmon, smoked salmon, potato salad, coleslaw, cheese board, maybe quiche, all the good stuff

Mummabear82 · 19/12/2019 16:53

Ooooh that sounds yummy!

We always have steak for Christmas Eve as it’s my favourite

MustardScreams · 19/12/2019 16:54

Mum did medium-rare panfried venison steaks with a smoked butter sweet potato purée, steamed kale, roasted celeriac and red wine gravy last year and it was divine. Special, but not heavy.

I'm tempted to have takeaway this year. We rarely have it, so it seems like a big treat.

Hiphopopotamus · 19/12/2019 16:54

Always a cheese fondue for Christmas Eve here with fancy bread and pickles. So easy to prepare but feels like such a treat!

Mummabear82 · 19/12/2019 16:55

@eatsleepmoverepeat I had given this some thought but I have the mother in law here too and I think it might be too big a meal - I love steak though!!

We have French dip sandwiches made with a really nice sirloin roast. No idea why but it's a tradition now.

Finfintytint · 19/12/2019 16:58

We always do tapas but this year DH is working so I’m wondering what to do for just me ( the enjoyment of tapas for us was preparing it together all afternoon).
Cheese and biscuits?

ElloBrian · 19/12/2019 17:00

I always do fish. Usually fish pie but this year I am doing monkfish with roast veg for a change.

We have a buffet too. People can just graze as we chat etc.

milliefiori · 19/12/2019 17:04

I love the idea of a Christmas Eve buffet. That way, you get to open all the lovely cheeses befpre you actually feel overfed from Christmas dinner.

We have to have spag bol. It's tradition. I used to make it for ease when DC were small as I knew they'd eat it even when they were excited. Then one year I asked what they wanted and they chorused 'spag bol' horrified that I could contemplate anything else. Doing a veggie one and a beef one.

Peanutbutteryogurt · 19/12/2019 17:07

We're having steak and chips and wine. I'll give DD pasta and sauce so we can have our steak later in front of the TV, rather than eating together.

Mightymaniac1 · 19/12/2019 17:09

We have pulled pork baps with apple sauce! Very nice, easy for people to help themselves too and nice after a few drinks!

iklboodolphrednosedreindeer · 19/12/2019 17:11

Oh and DS(14) is making a quiche and his savoury Chelsea buns this year to show off his cooking skills Grin

mildshock · 19/12/2019 17:11

We can't decide between a buffet and a takeaway.
Neither of us want to spend hours cooking, I've just had a long week cooking twice a day for 8 people and DP will be at working 6-4 Xmas eve.
I'm rooting for buffet because I want to open the cheese as soon as possible.

RhymingRabbit3 · 19/12/2019 17:11

I'm making Peking duck because its delicious and special but not too heavy. I'm trying to resist the temptation to buy loads of accompanying snacks...

LazyArsehole · 19/12/2019 17:11

It's DDs birthday Christmas Eve and she's chosen.... McDonald's Hmm

theSnuffster · 19/12/2019 17:25

For years we have had homemade macaroni cheese on Christmas Eve. I think it started when DS first watched Home Alone because it's what Kevin has!! But the kids have gone off pasta and want something different this year. Haven't decided what yet, their suggestions are all takeaways which I don't want to do as we tend to treat ourselves to a takeaway (or 2!) between Christmas and New Year.

parrotfashionista · 19/12/2019 17:30

We have smoked salmon, crusty bread, nice butter and champagne - I might do a baked Camembert too and a bit of salad - easy peasy x

Em012 · 19/12/2019 17:38

Been a running not so festive but tradition to get a McDonalds on Christmas eve started when I was little and now 28 long may it continue😂

Khione · 19/12/2019 18:16

baked camembert with crusty bread and veg crudites.

Twigletgirl27 · 19/12/2019 18:55

Always fish pie, Jamie Oliver's recipe with peas in the mash. Have made the pie mixture today and frozen. Will add mashed potatoes and heat through on Tuesday.

HelloDulling · 19/12/2019 18:58

We are going out for a Chinese meal. I am SO EXCITED!

Ruth2009 · 19/12/2019 19:00

I was thinking about doing hot beef sandwiches this year. Ill leave it in the slow cooker all day as we're at a pantomime in the afternoon.
I normally do gammon but fancy a change.
