Buying for a very special lady she is basically a grandmother to my DCs. She's wonderful and so so good with them so would like to get something she would enjoy.

She is Christian and attends church weekly. She doesn't bring it up around us as much as we are non practising but I know its a huge part of her life (not sure if this info helps). She is single and does not have biological children/grandchildren but she is like family to us.

I would love to get her some sort of special book but I am really stuck as my reading has taken a huge pause since having little DCs.

Can anyone think of anything?
TIA.

I wouldn't get a book to be honest as to me it's as personal a taste as perfume! People have given me books over the years that they've raved about and were sure that I'd love, and I didn't enjoy them at all!

What about a really nicely bound Bible? I think that would be a lovely gift and something she could carry with her regularly as a reminder of your DC.

Gilead by Marilynne Robinson if you want a novel.

Maybe a book of christian meditations?

I'd be fairly certain she already has a bible.

You could also buy her a nice scarf or cardigan.

How about a framed photo of your kids?

Why can I only think of the Unsuitable ones, like the poison wood Bible (brilliant and set out like a bible, centred on missionaries) or A God In Ruins?

Sorry.

The Signature of All Things is brilliant.

Do you want a book with a religious theme?

I enjoyed Soul Fuel by Bead Grylls and this might be nice for a Christmas gift www.waterstones.com/book/carols-from-kings/alexandra-coghlan/9781785944666

What kind of book do you want to get her? If she’s quite traditional The Other Side of the Coin by Angela Kelly looks fab. Angela has been the queen’s dresser for years and it’s about the Queen’s wardrobe, lots of pictures and produced with the royal family’s blessing. It’s something my grandmother would have absolutely loved.

She already has a Bible she takes out and reads a few times a week.

She volunteers at her church when she can and loves that sense of community. She also loves a good laugh and a g&t or a prossecco on special occasions.
She used to work for the NHS and once got me a lovely book about a midwife and her experiences which I really enjoyed.

I'd love to return the favour but feel quite stuck.

The Other Side of the Coin is a great idea.

The book I recommended Gilead, is a beautiful novel about an american vicar/minister in the late 19th/early 20th century, it is deeply christian and a fantastic, very moving story.

Oh, almost forgot .... Susan Howatch's starbridge series would be perfect too. They are set in a fictional cathedral town - there is a whole series of them.

A thousand paper birds by Tor Udall is an exquisite book.

Charlie Mackesy ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’

The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady
by Edith Holden

Very funny in a genteel sort of way.

My mother is a retired vicar, and her absolute favourite book is the Poisonwood Bible! Also anything else by Barbara Kingsolver.

She also ADORED The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber. I love it too. It's an amazing book about a vicar being sent to minister to the inhabitants of a planet that humans are colonising. Absolutely magical.

There's a book called The Christmas Mystery which is designed to be a christian advent calendar-type book, you read a chapter a day during Advent. I haven't read it myself but a very good friend says it is beautiful.

Barbararara · 20/12/2019 06:54

Anam Cara by John O’Donoghue. Get the hardback version rather than a paperback.

The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis

I love it when someone buys me a book they think I would enjoy. I have had some great ones. I think DH is getting me A Lady In Waiting. Some great suggestions above OP

chillykiwi · 21/12/2019 08:04

The Christmas Mystery is a great book. It's not especially Christian except that it's based on the advent calendar, there are angels in it but it's not a Christian book but a book based on a Christian event IYSWIM. Kind of like there are Xmas films based on Christmas but are not Christian films.

Clear as mud?

chillykiwi · 21/12/2019 08:07

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Christmas_Mystery has a synopsis of the book, it's actually intended for children but is OK for adults
