Vegan, sugar free, alcohol free, low faff Christmas pudding?

I may be asking the impossible! 🤣

Due to various dietary restrictions, I would like to serve a vegan, sugar free, alcohol free dessert on Christmas day. Ideally, I would like it to be as easy/low fuss as possible, or at least something I can prepare in advance.

Any ideas?! All I have so far is some kind of fruit salad...

How about a rhubarb and ginger crumble with dairy free custard? Lots of variations on google.

You could also do a low sugar dark choc mousse but it depends if vegan for dietary or ethical reasons, as you may need gelatine.

Fruit salad is very much not sugar-free

BuffaloCauliflower · 16/12/2019 16:05

If it’s sugar free is it even a dessert?! By sugar free do you mean refined sugar, or including things like no honey? (Which are all the same in the body anyway)

BillywilliamV · 16/12/2019 16:06

Satsumas, though they do contain sugar!

BitchyArriver · 16/12/2019 16:07

Sounds miserable.

Why not do 2 desserts. One can be vegan, one sugar free etc?

formerbabe · 16/12/2019 16:08

Dust

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 16/12/2019 16:12

Is there really any point? And I don't mean that sarcastically - it just seems impossible!

It reminds me of when Brad Pitt turns up for Thanksgiving on Friends and he's brought pie:

Oh right. All right, it’s no fat, it’s no sugar, it’s no dairy…it’s no good. Throw it out.

You can use Stevia as a sugar replacement. A replacement for gelatine is agar, derived from seaweed. Look in health shops.

I make blackberry and pear crumble, the fruits are low sugar, can sweeten with Stevia. Make crumble topping with chestnut flour, stevia and a vegan substitute for butter. Chestnut flour available from health shops. Serve pudding with oat cream or dairy free custard.

Oh there will be two puddings! Definitely a standard boozy, sugar laden traditional Christmas pud for those who partake but I wanted to offer an alternative for those who don't.

Yes, sorry, sugar free in this context is no refined sugar.

Thank you for the suggestions! I am liking the idea of blackberry and pear crumble...that would be nice and festive with some spices in the crumble topping

You could replace the Maple Syrup for stevia in this. Also if you had 90% cocoa choc it would be lower in sugar content

Kinsellahicks · 16/12/2019 18:36

Or this?

managedmis · 16/12/2019 18:37

How do you do crumble without sugar?

RiddleyW · 16/12/2019 18:41

Do you want to use sweetener instead?

Teddyreddy · 16/12/2019 18:48

@IToldYouIWasFreaky another option would be a baked apple stuffed with dried fruit and Christmas spices.

formerbabe · 16/12/2019 19:00

The problem is vegan AND sugar free won't really be tasty. If vegan, then sugar will be the thing that really make it taste good. If sugar free, then you need the richness and fattiness from butter, cream and eggs to make it taste good.

Cineraria · 16/12/2019 19:26

For the DC we sometimes freeze banana chunks and blend them with cocoa powder and Oatly (brand that does vegan friendly fake milk and cream), which makes a really rich chocolate and banana ice cream. We also do frozen strawberries blended with Oatly for strawberry ice cream. They love both of them and I also love the strawberry one.

girlywhirly · 16/12/2019 20:35

Stevia is available in granular form, it is super sweet tasting so you only need a third of the amount that you would use of normal sugar. It has a slightly caramel flavour. The brand I use is Truvia. Admittedly I use butter in my crumble mix, I follow the blood sugar diet which is why I use chestnut flour instead of wheat. It makes a lovely crumble, less ‘doughy’ than one with wheat flour.

Sorry can't help it. Reminds me of this meme!

Jamie Oliver's vegan chocolate terrine is amazing, and if you leave out the honeycomb mostly sugar free (apart from some sugar in the dark choc). You can make it days ahead, I always use it for a vegan pud and it gets rave reviews from vegans and non vegans too.

Air?

Egghead68 · 17/12/2019 06:49

This is not sugar free but is delicious, looks festive and ticks all the other boxes:

Two scoops of sorbet (one pink one white) with chopped strawberries topped with a huge mound of candy floss.

hookiwooki · 17/12/2019 08:21

or including things like no honey? Honey depends on the vegan. If you use honey please check with the vegan first.
