Which Snap Circuits for a 6 Year Old?

I'd like to get my 6-year-old snap circuits for Christmas, but I'm really unfamiliar with them, so I don't know which kit is best at this age. There's this one, but it's recommended for 8+ www.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/dp/B07VPDWXST/?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-christmas-3767624-Which-Snap-Circuits-for-a-6-Year-Old" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/dp/B07VPDWXST/

Obviously, it's great if it will hold his interest for a few years, but I also don't want it to be so difficult for him now that he just gets frustrated.

Which snap circuits did your 6-year-old like?

We had the cambridge brainbox ones which DS used from a similar age. The set you've linked looks almost identical.

At that age he was able to follow the instructions and put the circuits together, but not really ready to understand how they worked, or build his own circuits. I'd say he was closer to 10 even 11 before he was ready for that. In hindsight I wish we'd held off a bit as he lost interest when he built all the circuits in the book and didn't want to pick it up again when he was able to do it himself.

He did enjoy it at the time though.

I think my son got the one you linked off his grandma a few years ago. He liked playing with it but we had to help make the circuits. He didn’t play with it a lot but recently he has got in to it again, he’s 8. He’s able to make the circuits himself and experiment so we are getting him an add on for that set.

My son got that same kit when he was about 6, to be honest it never interested him as much as I hoped (he’s nearly 8 now, plays with it occasionally but not much)

Unless its something your child is desperatly interested in, and begging for the set, I'd hold off a year or 2.

Galt do some science kits aimed at slightly younger kids. There is a magnet one, and a physics one that might interest.

Mine liked growing crystals at that age.

We got the John Adams set when ds was 8ish. Interest lasted an hour or so over Xmas and was never looked at again, think it cost £50ish. They might actually still be in the games cupboard somewhere.

My nearly 6 year old Dd has that set, it was her brother’s but he wasn’t that interested.
She enjoys putting the circuits together with a little help, but for her it’s just like lego really. She doesn’t have any understanding about the circuits and why they work/don’t work.

Interesting. Thanks, maybe I'll hold off a bit then. And yes to the crystals, they have been a favourite, but I can't have any more around the house, unless I find a better way to preserve the results so I'm not always knocking them out of windowsills and breaking them Xmas Wink

Sorry my experience is different! I bought the kit you linked for my 4year old last Xmas, he's 5 now and it's still without doubt his absolute favourite toy, he is obsessed! I think it's a great present, and 6 is not too young if he is science minded.
