The first food shop...

Does anyone else do the Christmas food shop in two stages?

I'm going to Aldi tomorrow to buy the longer date items then will get the fresh stuff a couple of days before.

I've got a list of staples but any recommendations for anything good from Aldi this year?

Also looking for mid price red wine recommendations as I don't drink red but my uncle does.

Thanks

2 stages! I seem to have to go shopping every day for a fortnight.
So far I have had one shop for nuts and long lasting snacks, one shop fo r cake and pudding ingredients, one shop for chocolates and other stuff for work. I've also done a shop of things that cannot be in my Christmas week shop, such as dishwasher tablets and toilet rolls (industrial quantities as I always fear we will all get norovirus)
Aldi? their champagne is the best and it is very cheap too.

yes, I normally do that. Actually 3 stages.
Basic tesco online shop for boring stuff (cleaning stuff/tin foil/soft drinks/beer/jars and tins and branded stuff), normally a week before, often using a 'lure-you-back' voucher to get a bit off. I try not to get anything too nice in this shop otherwise it will all be eaten.
Big Ocado shop on 23rd for all the nice fresh stuff
Local shop on 23/24th depending on whether I am working to get fresh stuff from butchers/fishmonger/cheese shop/wine shop plus anything that is missing from big Ocado shop.

Works well for me and I normally only have a handful of things missing from big Ocado shop (or maybe a few things a bit too short dated) so that doesn't take too long and the other local stuff is quite fun and can be done in bits and bobs.

I went to Aldi yesterday and was disappointed as I didn’t get much Christmas stuff. For most items on my list, the items don’t come in until Dec 19 or they have sold out already! The 2m pig in blanket arrives daily, but has walked itself off the shelf where I live.... so suggest you get there early. This is one of their headline items. Also disappointed not to get the 3 fish roast, smoked salmon.

What I did manage to get...

The specially selected mince pies are gorgeous. My husband had one and declared they were the best shop bought he’s ever tasted. I concur they are delicious.

The 1.5kg Christmas cake is beautiful- it has a star design in pastel and shimmer. I looked this up beforehand and it scored respectably in a blind taste test. Think it was 11.99

The florentine’s looked lovely as did the musical biscuit tins. They also had lovely fresh wreaths for 9.99. And a decorate your own gingerbread house for a fiver (John Lewis selling similar for £16). The pre assembled ones are essential for young children to avoid tantrums Grin

Bits that I like and bought for Christmas ... vegetable crisps, plain tortilla chips, gin. Vegan sausage rolls very nice for all. I also got a Brie wheel.

I can’t drink Aldi wine. Never found one that doesn’t make me react because they’re so full of sulphates. Lidl is better for fine wine, salmon and German Christmas biscuits (lebkucken) and gluhvien.

Aldi’s Malbecs all good op- Chilean one with the beige gold label is excellent for about a tenner

My Christmas food shop is done in many stages. Emphasis on MANY!!

We bought the first cheese in August (brought back a ball of Edam from holidays in the Netherlands).

I was very late buying my turkey wine last week, normally I get that in September (just the wine for the meal itself).

I also made my mince meat back in August, so that is about ready now. And I made limoncello then which I filtered for bottling last weekend.

I have been gathering a few nice bits as I see them since early November - nice crackers from a deli on my way back from a Cub Scout overnight (I was delirious from lack of sleep and stopped at a really nice deli just for coffee/loo break, and left with 1 bag but a considerably lighter pocket!); hot chocolate mix from farmers market on our last trip "down home" (really nice artisan chocolatier there!!) and some local cheese too; a Christmas decoration tin filled with truffles from Lidl a couple of weeks ago....

I have been working on restocking the store cupboard and cleaning cupboard generally over the past 3 weeks with online shopping orders (and some wine for regular drinking on entertaining days). And having things in the freezer so I can mostly avoid main shops on my manically busy weeks. I will have to go in person this week, but only need things like milk, bread, yoghurt, (and the teabags which were out of stock last weekend?!) and may grab a few extras while I am there.

Next week I have one final online shop ordered. So the regular shopping for the week, most of the veg and fruit for Christmas itself, things like streaky bacon and sausage meat, mixers and sparkling water, extra bin bags etc are all included in that. And some cheese.

I've been to M&S near my office over lunch today and got some of the things I need for the Cubs Christmas party (James Bond Casino theme requested, so we needed chocolate coins and I got some gold dusted billionaires' squares) and a few party packs of crisps etc and small bottles of port for our own house.

I have just decided that, as I have a €5 off voucher for M&S, I will go back next week and get some rainbow carrots, nice mushrooms, olives, and some party food with long dates (and try to make some freezer space). There is a cheesemonger and a Leonidas on the route to M&S, so if the queues aren't manic, I may stop at both also.

Over the weekend, next weekend, (21st), I will go out to our local butchers and delis and cheesemonger and fishmonger and get things like a turkey (or some kind of nice joint to roast), salads, cooked and cured meats, cheese, some nice fish for over the weekend etc.

I will also try to get to a good off-licence about 20 minutes' drive (when no traffic) away, but that is right next to Ireland's equivalent of the Westfield SC, so it will be chaos - so DH may or may not get his Christmas craft beer.

We will be in M&S on 24th as I have to go to work and we need to buy DD's birthday cake (I am not baking on 26th!) so she will help choose it. So we will get some more party food then, and could end up only getting the turkey etc then too. And any other bits we still need.

And, in reality, there is nothing that I am worried about not getting. We will have some kind of nice food for the various days. There will be enough to eat and drink. And cleaning materials etc as needed. So if I don't get the Leonidas orangettes, I will make some extra mince pies instead. That kind of thing....but what might read like mammoth shopping efforts here actually isn't, it's more about ambling on a walk for my lunchbreak, and having a family stroll next weekend and choosing a few special things together rather than having to face the mammoth supermarket queues.

I don't tend to buy wine in Aldi, as I tend to enjoy Lidl's too much.

They do a lovely Cabernet Sauvignon, and a South African merlot that is lovely too. (And I can highly recommend their higher level prosecco - it's €11.99 here rather than the €8.99 lower level one, and quite delish!!).

BlueSkyAtChristmas · 10/12/2019 17:09

I read that Lidl is also sticking Cremant this year. Haven’t seen it myself, but would love to know if it’s worth the 40 minute drive to stock up. Anyone tried it??

BlueSkyAtChristmas · 10/12/2019 17:10

Can’t remember if it’s cremant de louire or limoux

KitKat1985 · 10/12/2019 17:12

I've got a jumbo Tesco order coming the Sunday before Christmas. It's nearly £250 and I'm not even doing Christmas dinner. Blush

NaughtyLittleElf · 10/12/2019 23:29

Nope, I've got a very few bits in mainly a Christmas Pudding and a couple of boxes of chocolates the rest will bought Christmas Eve when I've been paid again, meat will be collected from the butchers, cheese from the Cheese Shop and Ocado will bring the rest. There's only three of us so we don't need to stockpile.
