Xmas Dinner

I pre-ordered the largest turkey crown I could find a couple of weeks ago (serves 9-12) thinking we were having 11 for Christmas dinner (1 non turkey eater and 1 child) so I thought we would have plenty! However another 2 guests have now said they would like to come and I am worried we won't have enough turkey!
I have no extra oven space to make another roast but thought about maybe doing a ham in the slow cooker and serving this along with the turkey? I wouldn't be able to glaze the ham though?!
Does anyone do this and have a good recipe or can anyone suggest another solution?

I think you will be fine. There is a strange rule of thumb caterers use: the more people there are in a gathering the less people eat.

Do extra potatoes and loads of pigs in blankets I think you'll be great. Equally if you have a slow cooker you can roast the ham in that with dark brown sugar and you shouldn't need to glaze it

If you do loads of roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, etc. I doubt anyone will go hungry.

However re the ham, what I'd do is have it slow-cooked before the turkey is ready, then wrap the cooked turkey crown in foil plus tea towels etc. to keep hot, then slap this delish but simple glaze on the ham and finish it off in a hot oven for 20 mins. Turn the oven up if needed as soon as you take the turkey crown out,

Recipe is for a big piece, 1.8 kg, you may need less.

2 tbsp Dijon mustard
3 tbsp orange marmalade
1/4 tsp ground allspice (not to be confused with mixed spice!)
2 oz Demerara sugar
Salt and pepper
Mix all up in advance and brush over ham - remove skin first if necessary and pref. score the fat into diamonds with a sharp knife, though not vital if you're in a hurry.

Smells gorgeous while in the oven, too!

I'd do the ham in the slow cooker, if you want to cook it in coke and it'll have a sweet taste.

Thanks for replies! I think we might just have enough turkey but worried we get a small bird and then it's a real stretch!
If ham doesn't get used we can eat it the next day!
I always cool the turkey before serving but that's when I cook the trainings which will take up the oven space so can't glaze the ham!

I wouldn’t worry - turkey is the least interesting part of the dinner! Yes a ham would be lovely. Maybe some pigs in blankets too for an extra meat hit?!

Littleshortcake · 08/12/2019 11:51

I would cook the ham the day before. Or use the slow cooker.

Diet Coke slow cooker ham- no need to glaze then

I don't think the servings they say for turkey's are ever accurate. I've never once made or gone to a Christmas dinner where there's been no turkey left after the dinner. I think the servings are based on the turkey being one third of the meal for everyone but we know the turkey never takes up a third of the plate. There's so many other things to get on the plate like roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, veg, stuffing, mash and all the other extras people do. When a turkey says it will feed 9-12 people, I would say it will actually feed 12 people with enough left over for sandwiches on boxing day or to make a curry etc

I think it will be fine. I had a similar worry last year and it turned out there was plenty of meat ( we had some left over!).

With potatoes, veg, pigs in blankets plus pudding and in our house smoked salmon and cream cheese on blinis there tends to always be enough food.
