Electronic drum kit

DS (8) really wants an electronic drum kit he saw in Lidl for Christmas (photo attached - hope you can see it). I know nothing at all about drum kits and neither does he. Does anyone have any advice? Are table top versions worthwhile? Most other electronic drum kits seem to have stands. I don't want to waste money on this if it won't be any good so any help appreciated!

Does he play the drums or want to learn? If so I wouldn't buy the Lidl one. It has one drum missing that you would normally find on a standard drum kit and won't help with learning coordination, moving arms around etc.

That's really helpful thanks. He doesn't play the drums yet but if he was serious, we would consider lessons

It looks like a toy rather than an actual drum kit. Which is fine if that’s what he’s keen on. If he actually wants to play the drums you would need a proper drum kit.

It's a toy. If you can afford to buy it in the knowledge that it's a toy and will have to be charity-shopped/thrown out in a few months if he gets genuinely interested, crack in, but if it would be a substantial outlay relative to your circumstances, don't do it

DS plays the drums - first 6 months was spent leaning the basics on a rubber practice pad prior to buying a decent entry level kit.

Practice pad, sticks and stand came to about 50 quid, entry level kit (joint Christmas present from all the family) was about 300 quid.

Speaking as a musician, I'd say there are no musical instruments where an entry level instrument that is playable comes in much under 200 quid. However many shops (eg music room) do zero percent finance, if you go down the route of lessons your child's teacher may be able to source second hand instruments, and some schools still have loan instruments
