What can I get you for Christmas?

Dear Mumsnetters,

I am a man. I have a mother. I come in peace.

For the past few years I have cunningly used Mumsnet as a fountain of knowledge to buy Christmas presents for my other half. During that time, I have been guided towards silk dressing gowns (which were a huge hit), Coach handbags (which went down okay) and other things that I can no longer remember. You’ve been pretty helpful and I’m in desperate need of help again. I have zero time to go out shopping between now and Christmas and I will be away with work for much of the next two weeks – so it will mostly be done through the internet. The intended recipient is my wife, who is 42, active, loves dogs, the great outdoors and anything nice really. I have no idea how much I’ll spend. Somewhere between £400 and £1000ish by the time I’ve got a few things. We have no children so I like to spend a bit on her at Christmas.

Anyway, and top tips are gratefully received. What would you like as a present this Christmas?

Thanks in advance!

Carl

Ducks - she'd love ducks.

As for presents for husbands, I'd like:

The Dishoom cookbook
A noodle maker
A Japanese saw
A thin padded jacket from Finistere
A fishermans jumper
A Peleton bike
Narita from the barrel whisky
Socks and pants

What I would not like

Anything to do with shaving
Washbags
Soap
Novelty mugs
Novelty anything
Hand warmers
Clothing with slogans
Budget electronics

I would love a beautiful diary and a nice fountain pen, some new hiking shoes and a nice bottle of gin with some tonics.

Oh and some smart but warm and washable gloves.

Dear MNHQ - please could we have a competition where male people post their preferred Christmas lists - and we judge their attractiveness based on what they want? Points, prizes, etc?

Mr eatspeas has probably already won though ...

Batshittery · 03/12/2019 16:50

What a great idea Carl.
I wouldn't want anything from lush but I love Georg Jenson grapes jewellery. Cashmere lounge hoody, Olverum bath oil is lovely. Lancome Tresor perfume (although scent is personal choice, this is my all time favourite)
I'm sure she'll be pleased whatever you buy.
What do you think your wife will get for you?

jbfletcher1 · 03/12/2019 16:51

Liberty dept store has gorgeous jewellery & general nice bits & bobs

mumonthehill · 03/12/2019 16:52

Tiffany necklace, cashmere anything, Elemis smellies, a good box of chocs. Perfect Christmas!!!

bookmum08 · 03/12/2019 16:54

I am a 44 year old woman and of the suggestions so far I would have zero interest in 95% of them. Have you actually asked your wife? That's an awful lot of money to spend on a random "I hope she likes this" (although it's your money - you obviously know what is an OK budget for you).
Have you told your wife your lists of what you would like?

Carleatspeas · 03/12/2019 16:56

Well she'll almost certainly get me a noodle maker, as we just got back from Japan and did a cookery lesson which involved making noodles while out there. This is a sure-fire bet. I'd be very happy with it.

Thinking about it, she wanted some slippers. I might get some Glerup ones? Any others which are popular?

I like Draper of Glastonbury but I live in a very cold house.

PrettyShiningPeople · 03/12/2019 17:00

It amused me that you signed off your post with your name, but I expected you to be called Gordon.

JengaNonConfirming · 03/12/2019 17:01

An Olivia Burton watch, a big scarf (warm, not flimsy) and a really nice bottle of rhubard gin, please Grin

Notonthestairs · 03/12/2019 17:17

Monica Vinader earrings.
A voucher for something fun to do together (which for me would be theatre, wine tasting, cookery class - your wife might like hot air ballooning, rally cars etc etc)
Trip away somewhere peaceful/near the sea - and completely planned out so all I'd need to do would be pack a toothbrush.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 03/12/2019 17:43

A leather Kikki K organiser

Boden cosy pull-on jammie bottoms

Lip balm from Glossier

L'occitane Cherry Blossom bubble bath

Rocket Dog Chelsea Boots

A Sanna Annukka Scandinavian wool throw.

Absolutely no idea if your wife would like any of this stuff. This is more a wishlist in case my hubby is also silently stalking this thread Grin

Batshittery · 03/12/2019 18:13

Mega de ja vu here so I checked and the OP got MN to do the donkey work last year too 😂😂😂😂

Ninkanink · 03/12/2019 19:29

To be fair I think it’s quite thoughtful, really. Luckily my OH is very good at gift giving but if he wasn’t I’d appreciate him making the effort to at least try to get some good suggestions!

Bearbehind · 03/12/2019 19:32

I’m not knocking it - I tell my DH what I want as I’d hate him spending that much money and getting it wrong but if that isn’t your thing then getting ideas from others is a great idea.

Ninkanink · 03/12/2019 19:35

Bigsighall · 03/12/2019 19:37

MoodLighting · 03/12/2019 20:07

Lovely cashmere scarf and gloves, excellent food processor. Great books. Expensive chocolate. A lovely plant. A pretty wooden blanket.

MoodLighting · 03/12/2019 20:07

Woolen blanket!! Argh auto correct

rhubarbcrumbles · 03/12/2019 20:17

Spend the £1000 and go away somewhere - Iceland perhaps?

MyUsernameHistory · 03/12/2019 20:22

A decent water/tea bottle that can have either hot or cold drinks in. Acts like a thernos but looks like a Chilly's.

And chickens. A girl can dream...
