Stocking Fillers - how do you decide

IcouldbutIwont · 02/12/2019 23:39

How do you decide what is a stocking filler and what is a main present. Do you go by price, such as anything say under £10 is a stocking filler or is it small stuff to fit in a stocking regardless of the price.

OP posts:
LauraPalmersBodybag · 02/12/2019 23:41

Price and size

TristmasChree · 02/12/2019 23:42

I have this dilemma. Have just bought my 2 daughters some mid range make up. Ideal for fitting in the stocking but each item £15 to £20!!

MistressMind · 02/12/2019 23:52

Size, price and "electronicness". Father Christmas doesn't bring tech.

ZenNudist · 02/12/2019 23:56

Price and size. Stockings are a bit of fun before real presents.

RoseMartha · 03/12/2019 00:15

Price and size. Every item under £5. Most things £1-£2.
Couple of fun things
Couple of small wanted things
Couple of practical things
Couple of edible things
Couple of needed things

Kensie · 03/12/2019 00:17

The small awkward ones that are hard to wrap go in the stocking along with chocolate.

Cookit · 03/12/2019 06:04

or is it small stuff to fit in a stocking regardless of the price.

Yes this is what I do. I don’t specifically buy stocking fillers. That seems incredibly wasteful really. I just buy the presents I intend to give and then on Christmas Eve when everything is put out I try and cram as much in the stocking as possible.
If nothing particularly fits in and the stocking looks empty I try and fill it with things from the big thing, if that makes sense.

Growing up we always had stockings but never the concept of stocking fillers being just cheap presents bought for the sake of filling a stocking.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/12/2019 07:17

It's small fun or practicalthings. Never overly expensive, most costly thing is likely to be the book and that's only a fiver.

We only buy 2-3 'big' presents so there is a distinction anyway.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 03/12/2019 07:34

We don’t really, we just do presents. Some are big and some are small depending on the item.

We don’t do actual stockings as little fits in them I’ve found and we don’t want to add to landfill by buying plastic for the sake of it.

icecreamsundae32 · 03/12/2019 07:42

Just whatever fits in the stocking. They don't believe in Santa so know it's all from us anyway. But in general things like new slippers, socks, books, chocolate, lynx gift set (or similar), small Lego set, goalie gloves, football kit, chemistry set. Then I keep out the bigger things that don't fit eg board game or big Lego set and also any tech as wouldn't want it crushed in stocking. I don't buy "stocking fillers" as such in the novelty sense of things as I don't see the point in stuff they won't really use so I just fill the stocking with stuff I'm buying anyway!

Cookit · 03/12/2019 07:57

@ IceCreamAndCandyfloss yes!

ColdRainAgain · 03/12/2019 09:17

Stockings are from Santa. He fills them with small and cheep, but fun or useful things.
Presents are from friends and family. They are whatever the gifted chooses.

Proseccoinamug · 03/12/2019 09:21

All small ‘extras’ but we only buy one main present (they get others from relatives) so anything apart from the main thing really.

Lovemusic33 · 03/12/2019 12:40

A bit of both. Most stocking items are under £5 and now the dc’s are older some of the main presents are quite small and could fit in the stocking but then their wouldn’t be many gifts under the tree. So mainly just go with small items under £5.

caperplips · 03/12/2019 17:13

Santa brings all presents here (not presents from family members etc) And he loves hiding the really wanted and wished for present in the very toe of the stocking - last year a phone, this year airpods. Makes things fun. There is nothing more exciting than a filled to the brim stocking!

Puffinhead · 03/12/2019 19:16

Price. I keep my stocking presents under £5, most come under £2. They mostly consist of stationery items, bath stuff, chocolate and hair bands. I have 3 DD so I try and keep it balanced but age-appropriate. For example, my youngest doesn’t have a phone but I’ve bought the older 2 a portable charger/speaker (cost under £10 each) but I’ll wrap those as a main present.

Pilot12 · 03/12/2019 19:23

Small cheap things, £2.99 puzzle from Aldi, card game, bubble bath, chocolate Santa, chocolate coins, Smarties tube......

Selfsettling3 · 03/12/2019 19:48

Stocking is from Santa so it’s size and things we wouldn’t normally get eg nail polish

Stompythedinosaur · 03/12/2019 20:13

I go buy size and unusualness. FC always manages to find some odd stuff for the dc. This year he is planning some geodes and fossils.

CherryPavlova · 03/12/2019 20:21

Price mainly. I do stockings and my husband does amain presents.

Stocker fairly set with similar things in everyone’s and each year now.
Underwear
Tights/socks
Scent/aftershave
Toiletries
Book
Magazine
Jewellery or cuff links
Makeup
Gloves/scarf/hat or similar
A £10 note
Chocolate coins
A selection box
Stationary
A few silly things

user1493413286 · 03/12/2019 20:27

Have to be small enough to fit in a stocking and under £3, much more than that becomes a bigger present

penberrh · 03/12/2019 20:40

Stocking fillers are usually chocolate coins, smarties, magazine or other cheap things that will fit into a stocking. Disclaimer: I do christmas all wrong according to MN - 1) santa brings everything 2) everything is under the tree, stockings are hung next to the fireplace (ie nothing in bedroom) 3) our stockings appear to be stocking sized (not big bags or anything) so would never fit anything like a chemistry set in.

I guess I buy 'under the tree booster-uppers' (catchy!) which can be around £5 to £20, in addition to a 'main' present.

countdowntochristmas · 03/12/2019 20:42

Small & cheap .
Examples
Socks
Chocolates usually one of those tubes / chocolate Santa / Lindt
Bubble bath
Pens

penberrh · 03/12/2019 20:45

Things that I buy year on year (some of which go in the stocking) are:

malteasers
Choc coins
Choc santa
magazine
selection box
pringles
smarties
stupidly unhelathy cereal type stuff (as they never get this during the year)
ferrero rocher or thorntons toffee

'booster uppers' for DD (10) this year are:
underwater bath light
slime
art set (paints, pencils, etc)
cake in a mug
calligraphy book and pens
harry potter glass
HP quill pen
mindfulness colouring book
headset for xbox

the most expensive was the art set for £15. All from places like aldi/b&m/primark

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 03/12/2019 21:01

Just size for us. If it fits it goes in stocking if it doesn't it is a wrapped present. In the past I've done stocking fillers like socks but dds arent interested in these on the day so I've not bothered this year, just got what I would get anyway and if it fits it will go in. Might have a panic when I wrap and do a stocking trail run as it may look empty but it is a fairly small stocking so Hopefully will be fine
