If you don’t have a roast dinner, what do you have?

Partly asking for myself and partly just curious... We always do a full roast with all the trimmings but now DCs are grown up we might try something new! If it was completely up to me I’d probably opt for just a giant bowl of cheesy pasta but...

I have a friend who always goes for a curry, and MIL was telling me about a distant relative of hers who has Mcdonald’s Confused What about you?

Sundays or Xmas ? I’d have a nice bit of salmon

lotsofstripes · 29/11/2019 15:33

Xmas specifically Smile Salmon would be a great idea as we all love fish except DS who is spending it with his GF this year so would work well.

If we have Christmas at home by ourselves we would have Sirloin steaks. Going to Inlaws this year so it will be Turkey.

stucknoue · 29/11/2019 15:37

If it was just me I would have duck perhaps, with potatoes dauphinois. Though in all honesty I wouldn't bother, I'd order a curry or go out for dinner - our local Indian restaurant is open and has "singles tables" where they group you together if you are alone and apparently it's a brilliant atmosphere. (Alas my parents are descending on me, kids are coming home and stbexh has assumed he's invited so turkey it is)

showmewhatyougot · 29/11/2019 15:39

My son hates roast dinner :( so at Christmas we tend to make him whatever his favourite meal of the time is. This year I imagine it will be pizza, lasagne or nuggets, maybe even abit of each :(

I believe christmas meals should be enjoyed! So if you want cheesy pasta, then go for it! X

How can people not love a good roast!

Rattysparklebum · 29/11/2019 15:47

Last year I made a turkey and leek pie the day before, it was really tasty and much less time in the kitchen on Christmas day

Loopytiles · 29/11/2019 15:50

Guess much depends on what you like doing on Xmas day, and how much time you want to spend cooking.

I have friends with difficult families who always spent Xmas alone as a couple (now they have DC): they just used to do nice nibbles, nice booze and stay in bed most of the day! Always thought that sounded nicer than the traditional!

chipsandpeas · 29/11/2019 15:52

last year had steak this year having beef wellington

FurrySlipperBoots · 29/11/2019 15:54

We've never had a traditional Christmas dinner with roast meat. Instead we have cheesy roast potatoes with a green salad. It sounds really boring but it's delicious and simple, and does its own thing in the oven while we focus on presents.

Ninkanink · 29/11/2019 15:54

This year it’s just the two of us on the day so we will do steak/fillet of beef/beef rib (haven’t decided which one yet).

We’re doing our main feast on NYE when my two daughters will be here, and we’re having goose.

thenightsky · 29/11/2019 15:54

Salmon.

maddiemookins16mum · 29/11/2019 16:22

Steak, Dauphonoise potatoes and some nice veg.

ritzbiscuits · 29/11/2019 16:34

What about a small slow cooked spiced gammon, cauliflower cheese and either mash/jacket potatoes, pickled red cabbage on the side too. Super easy and comforting.

PinkysEars · 29/11/2019 16:35

Whatever we fancy. There are just the two of us and we've done various things over the years: picnic on the beach; afternoon tea; selection of dips and lovely crunchy vegetables/salad (followed up by an unfeasible amount of cake); buffet; sandwiches....

I'm veggie but my DH isn't, so he often has pigs in blankets and smoked salmon as elements of his choices.

I like it because it isn't stressful, I don't ever feel over-full and we get to eat exactly what we like. So it really works for us. Appreciate it wouldn't work in most families (and probably not if we were hosting Grin).

Tiggles · 29/11/2019 18:57

We had salmon last year.
Not sure what Dh is planning this year.

Iwantmychairback · 29/11/2019 18:59

Spaghetti last year. Think we’ll go for curry this year.

Ted27 · 29/11/2019 19:09

me and a 15 year old. We have lasagne, followed by apple crumble and custard.

inthekitchensink · 29/11/2019 19:12

We used to have lobster and chips! Half a lobster, hollandaise sauce, and some fizz. It was only the three of us so got it ready prepared, no fuss, very special

Verily1 · 29/11/2019 19:12

Salmon en croute

Carolinesmum · 29/11/2019 21:44

Pasta sounds lovely! But I'd have to cook it myself. ☹ . My ideal dinner would be a fantastic dinner in a chinese restaurant yum . If only there was one open! And my other half hates Chinese food. If I went with my daughter I'd have to pay the bill. Ho hum. Think a nice bottle of chablis and a cheese sandwich might be the best option?

queenoftheschoolrun · 29/11/2019 22:18

We have a buffet, everyone gets to choose a couple of dishes so we end up with salmon, King prawns, a ham, pork pie, pigs in blankets, cheese and chutneys etc. All pre-prepared and everyone's happy with no stressed chefs missing out on present opening.. We have a roast dinner on Boxing Day.

Joyfulincolour · 29/11/2019 22:28

We have a really nice afternoon tea on Xmas day. It allows to see relatives without having to rush home to cook the turkey. We then have the roast on Boxing Day.

georgedawes · 29/11/2019 22:34

We have a buffet, spend £30 at Aldi buying different things and then whack it on the table on Xmas Day. No fuss, cheap and tasty.

Tatiannatomasina · 29/11/2019 22:37

Here in Oz its ham and seafood. Heathens. We have turkey with all the trimmings and crank up the air con.

lotsofstripes · 01/12/2019 23:23

Lots of food for thought here, thank you everyone Grin I really like the sound of lobster as it’d be a real treat and like I said before, we never normally do seafood or fish as DS hates it so it’d be nice to take the opportunity.

Maybe a buffet with all our favourite foods...
