Toys or a 5 year old

I'm looking for some ideas for toys for my 5yo dd. In particular things with good play potential that she can really engage with. Her santa letter includes things like Rainbocorns, hatchimals, furreals, remote control things. I'm looking for things that will keep her attention or that she will go back to to play with more than once. I find that the surprise toys such as LOL or perhaps Rainbocorns have limited potential beyond the excited of seeing what's inside. Although maybe good as fun but quite expensive stocking fillers?
Any ideas? or should I just chill out and go with what she's said she wants (possibly under the influence of her older sibling)?

I’d chose toys over a 5 year old any day.

Sorry I can't help. My 5 year old DD has asked for rubber ducks and a puzzle. Wink I would choose one or two of items from her list and bulk out with more standard items like books and puzzles.

My 5 year old DD has asked for a moving bed that she can take everywhere and LOL balls to fill the whole house. So we got her a scooter. ConfusedGrin
She loves board games though. Especially the Orchard ones.

Frozen stuff. My 6yo is looking wistfully at the whole Frozen section in the supermarket (the film, not food!).

Lego or Sylvanian Families or Playmobil or a train set. Good toys that will last for years.

Toys please

Damn. Beaten to it! Xmas Grin

Lego fits the bill and there are lots of different sets available depending on interests

Family can also buy cheaper add on sets, mats, storage boxes etc

BlueSkyAtChristmas · 29/11/2019 13:07

We also have playmobil and sylvanium families. Again they can be added to and have great play value. You end up with a more manageable amount of toys to store if you focus on building a collection over multiple Christmas and birthdays

My 5 year old loves playmobil and really engages in it. And his toy kitchen. And cars/lorries/tractors...

This year he's getting a stunt scooter, playmobil, a messenger bag and some craft stuff.

Binoculars. Random but both my dd love theirs. They take them on walks to see wildlife, play spys, stargaze, all sorts ..we get loads of use out of them.

HairyToity · 29/11/2019 13:52

I have a six year old. She also asks for LOLs, but doesn't really play with them. She will still have a couple. What she actually makes use of is arts and crafts items. I put together a school set last year that was well played with. It included the Learning Resources buzzers for quizzes. Big hit!

She also loved a daft board game called Wally The Washer.

Good luck.

As PP Lego, Playmobil or Sylvanians. Dd is now 12 and I wish we’d just stuck to these 3 plus books, art & craft stuff. They are the things that have been played with the most, the only things we’ve kept and still all look like new.

UndertheCedartree · 29/11/2019 14:06

The toys that I have bought in the past that have had lots and lots of play over the years are wooden blocks, tree blocks, wooden animals, playmobil, leap frog leapreader and various books/world map/ solar system pack etc. and dressing up clothes. My DD likes my little pony and dolls of any sort, too.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 29/11/2019 14:11

I would go with some sort of playset for the lol dolls. my dd uses sylvannian families, playmobil and shopkins playsets which all work well.

It does depend on her interests though, my dd has always liked small world toys. arts/crafts and role play like a kitchen etc never got much use.

dressing up costumes get lots of use the amount of times I've needed to fix her moana costume she wears it loads!

My five year old loves Playmobil and Lego and will be getting more of it. His four year old sister plays with him and is getting the Playmobil hospital and some more Sylvanian families. She has asked for lol stuff and more pomsies but never plays with it ever. She is also getting some jigsaws and colouring stuff too.
