Gift ideas for women in their 50s/60s

My sisters. I love then but we are not close if you know what I mean. Different tastes/lifestyles. They are quite middle of the road/catholic in their tastes. In the past I have bought them cosmetic gift boxes; snoods or scrafs; necklaces/bracelets; books.

They buy me bags of posh groceries; or sweets and little treats; and one always gets me Orla Kiely stuff (enough already!). I'd say two spend £5 - £10, one spends £30 - £40 - which is similar to me. No judgement on that - I sometimes think I spend more because its easier when you don't have ideas.

Any suggestions? They can be in my previous categories or entirely new!

I second silk pillowcase. My Mum (late 60s) is obsessed with them and I really should have got her one, but I didn't think about it in time - she always spends Christmas in Australia and will be landing in Sydney roundabout now. I left shopping till the last minute and got her some National Trust gardening gloves, which is still good as she won't have to spend money replacing her old ones in the spring. I've come to appreciate boring, practical gifts because most people, especially the elderly, have enough "stuff".

If it were me I'd like a scented candle, but so many find their way into charity shops that clearly not everyone feels the same way!

Was going to suggest Boden ( 30% off) and looking at any major department store as they all have BF sales at the moment. Brora is only 10% which is a bit stingy

BertrandRussell · 29/11/2019 18:29

I’m in that category and if anyone has said slippers, a lap tray, a nice scarf or afternoon tea I’ll scream......

AlexaAmbidextra · 29/11/2019 18:29

Bed socks, aprons, gardening gloves? Ffs. I’m 66 and feel like killing myself now.

Dollymixture22 · 29/11/2019 18:33

I bought my friend a pen apron for her fortieth! It was gorgeous, she loves baking and wears it all the time.

Your response is a bit ageist to be honest. My suggestions were linked to their interests not their ages.

A little oversensitive perhaps😳😊🙄

milliefiori · 29/11/2019 18:43

You could get the gardeners some new gardening gloves, trowels or secateurs - always need replacing ime. Or some pretty bird feeders. Or some seasonal seeds, annuals or bulbs.

I agree - cashmere gloves or socks are about £30 and a winner.

For the £5-10 gifts I'd get some nice Carluccio's chocolate truffles in a glass jar.

picklemepopcorn · 29/11/2019 18:45

In case it helps anyone else, I'm a woman in my 50s. I'd like that spice subscription. Posh chocolate. Actual posh, not Thornton's. An aeropresse for coffee... erm...

Bouledeneige · 29/11/2019 18:46

Okay I'm sorry if I stirred the pot with this post! I actually just bought them some cashmere wristwarmer gloves - you know long fingerless ones. I have some and love them.

Funnily I got my grown up neices and kids some cashmere bed socks! Because I think they're lovely for lounging around in the evenings.

My mum retires next year and have found a lovely little workshop that make jewellery. So she will have a couple of hours being shown how to make something and then keeps the piece she makes.

Sooverthemill · 29/11/2019 19:04

@AlexaAmbidextra the OP is in the same age group and thinks these are good for her sisters! I'm in that age group and something that could be ordinary but instead is luxurious eg cashmere socks would be awesome I think. Her sisters like gardening and cooking. My younger sister ( 60 in January) would not. She would want dog related stuff. Everyone is different

HereBePumpkins · 29/11/2019 19:21

I’m 60 and my favourite ever present was last year - Nintendo Switch plus Zelda game 😀
But back to your question:
A jigsaw (I’d be thrilled to receive one - particularly a Wentworth)
Molton Brown stuff (either personal or for the home)
Liz Earle stuff
Book token (might be boring, but very much appreciated)
Cashmere socks/hat/gloves/scarf (pricey though)
Pyjamas
Candle/diffuser
I’ve just been Christmas shopping and saw quite a lot of ‘help to sleep’ gifts - pillow sprays etc.
A particularly nice notebook
A speaker you attach to a phone to listen to music
Create a photobook (maybe from your childhood)
Photo album
I’ve just treated myself to a book - The Big Book of Christmas Mysteries by Otto Penzler
I’m also looking at books about the origination of Christmas traditions

HereBePumpkins · 29/11/2019 19:39

*Origins not origination

I frequently buy the Perfume Society discovery boxes for my mum and mil, who have loved them. They offer a range of fragrances to try, they are bound to find something they like. There’s currently 20% off this BF weekend so they are only £15. They are presented beautifully , so ideal for gifting.

Ragwort · 29/11/2019 19:50

I’m that age and I really don’t want anything, I only like charity gifts but I know they are not popular with everyone.

Shortysoso · 29/11/2019 19:53

I’m (just) in that age bracket. I stumbled into a high end boutique today and they had these amazing socks.
£35 in there but they were the same as these
www.net-a-porter.com/gb/en/product/1108048/maria_la_rosa/two-tone-metallic-silk-blend-socks
Nuts and crazy for socks but I’d secretly love a pair Grin

Evennow · 29/11/2019 19:56

Am in the age range. I have a house full of “stuff”. Love food items esp cheese, bottle of brandy, ticket to a show/exhibition etc. Anything that won’t occupy space!

AlexaAmbidextra · 29/11/2019 20:12

Hardly ageist against my own age group if that was aimed at me. Nor do I feel over sensitive. I just knew that given the quoted age group the suggestions would be so predictable.

Dollymixture22 · 29/11/2019 20:27

Alexa. I made the suggestion about the apron and he gardening gloves because the recipients enjoy baking and gardening,

I also suggested travel books. My suggestions had nothing to do with age. I am twenty years younger and would love all the presents suggested - I tend to get a lot of hand cream😩

You brought age into it, and to be honest I felt a bit irritated by toir comments😊

I’m not sure ththe suggestions would have been different for a theory year old who cooks and gardens🥰🥰🥰

Dollymixture22 · 29/11/2019 20:27

Sorry for the typos!

AnneKipanki · 29/11/2019 22:05

NaToth · 29/11/2019 22:16

The house is full now. Please give me something I can eat or drink, or something I can do. I have already had a balloon flight and driven a steam train. I'm hanging on for driving a tank and riding a camel (in Warwickshire).

AnneKipanki · 29/11/2019 22:19
