Christmas dinner/nibbles

What do I buy? First year hosting and it's me, DP, 3 DCs, mum, stepdad and brother.

I'm putting everything out as a help yourself rather than a formal sit down meal but apart from the obvious roast dinner bits what nibbles and extras would you love to see at Christmas?

Tbh you won’t need anywhere near as much food as you think .
And keep it simple . Last year DD and partner ended up way out of their comfort zone by producing a very elaborate meal for a crowd against the clock - I was happy to help being an old hand at Christmas catering .
You want to enjoy it too !

I agree with previous poster. You need a lot less than you think, I'm doing Christmas dinner for 5 adults and 3 children, were having no starters, a roast beef dinner with 3 types of veg, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets (cos it's Christmas!!) and Yorkshires then I'll do 2 different puddings and I'll get some ice cream for the kids.
I absolutely hate hate the waste of food that comes with Christmas dinners and the extra cost, to be honest for me it's just a normal Sunday dinner with a few extras. I might push the boat out and buy a tub of chocolates for the afternoon but that's it!! Tea will just be a cold meat sandwich and crisps!!

We have started doing posh nibbles in afternoon with champagne while opening tree presents and then eating later, I find, especially the children end up not being hungry if we do a formal starter as well as dinner and it’s just a bit of a waste.

I also tend to stay away from supermarket party food which is very carb heavy and generally not very nice.

We do blini’s with different toppings, smoked salmon, horseradish cream & dill. Parma ham and Fig, Stilton and honey (lots of different ones go try) olives which I marinate in balsamic, olive oil, rosemary and sea salt. We also do prawn mayonnaise on baby gem lettuce leaves (old school but always goes down well) and a homemade hummus with posh crackers.

Nibble-wise we like:
Olives
Cheese palmiers
Mini quiches/tarts
Mozerella pearls
Mini sausage rolls
Salted nuts
Pork crackling
Roasted chestnuts

I agree to keep it simple.

I do like to have some nice pickled onions and red cabbage (both Garners), with cheese, for when I get the munchies at about 9 o'clock in the evening. And good crisps.
