Hello. I really want to get a real tree this year, but am a bit lost with the choices. I would be very grateful for advice! We have always had fake trees

What tree would you recommend? Not too expensive hopefully
If i get one this weekend will it survive to Christmas?
Any top tips for keeping it nice?

Thank you

Not a huge help in type, but I'd see if you have any Christmas tree farms nearby. Were really lucky to have a few and take great delight cutting our own, we also know we're reducing the travel miles of a tree from miles away, we cut the one we want (as do others) so no waste, plus it's bloody good fun seeing my son and husband cut it down.
Last year we went with neighbors and had the competition to see who cut theirs down first!

real trees are lovely! worth every penny....smell wonderful....
try and get one with non drop needles, they really are better
the best thing long term (if you have the space) is to buy one that has been grown in a pot, then you can keep it outside and use it next year.
failing that get one that is cut, make sure you have a stand that allows it to stand in water. You should get the bottom few inches cut off just before you bring it home, that will allow it to take up water.

Don't get one too soon, they don't really like sitting in warm rooms.

Oh tips, don't get it too soon! One year we got it on the first and were terrified it would set on fire by the 25th!
We get ours a week later (so 7th or 8th this year)
Keep it topped up with water and the room as cool as possible. We've a log fire which doesn't help so sit it near the vent and window
Prey oldest boy cat who sprays in inappropriate places doesn't piss up the tree. It'll take forever to find it and impossible to get rid of the smell

We have a beautiful tree i dig up and replant anually. He was free originally and we love him as he grows alongside DD5. I can't bear murdering a tree each year (tree hugger i know!) And a smelly dusty shed infused placcy job just feels too retro. I feel like we have a new pet in the house when tree joins us!

Drogonssmile · 26/11/2019 20:05

@MrOnionsBumperRoller that's brilliant, I love that idea. We're getting a real tree for the first time this year. I now fancy keeping it as a pet once Christmas is over!

Actually you should buy one a cheap Norway one because they shell. The non drop ones don’t. When you’ve got it, chop an inch or two offthe bottom. They seal themselves so can’t take enough water to keep the needles otherwise.
Leave it in a pot of water outside for a week so it can drink up the water in the cold.
Being it in when you are ready and in a containiner with no holes (decorated bucket, plant pot etc ) supported by bricks or a couple of rocks inside and fill with water . Job done.

Leflic · 27/11/2019 00:00

Smell not shell.

We always get a Nordmann non drop. They do drop a bit but not too bad. Will probably wait a week or two actually, maybe weekend of 7th/8th. Our local garden centre pretty reasonably priced
