Family Carols at St-Martin-in-the-Fields

Hi all, wondered if anyone has been to these family carol concerts and whether they are fun for a 4 year old? DS loves music and singing but we went to a local one last year and there was a lot of droning on about God stuff (I appreciate that’s the point but we are only interested in the singing!). Many thanks in advance.

Heaven forbid anyone mentions God at CHRISTMAS.

FFS.

It’s kind of a God event TBH.

If you want festive singing, go to a choir or school concert. If you go to a carol service at a church, then it will be about, you know what! Jesus, the reason for the season!

What, Christmas is about god and stuff? What the hell are they doing talking about god in a church?

Titsywoo · 25/11/2019 18:35

I don't think a church service is for you! Maybe find somewhere carol singers are performing and sing along.

What about the Barbican kids cinema Christmas party. Not sure if they still do it but we always went when ds was little and it was great fun.

No need to get uppity, it’s not about the content but amount of time spent talking which would be boring for any small child.

Thanks LordProf for the suggestion, will check it out.

We went to it a couple of years ago, the first time DD was a bit older, maybe 6, the second time maybe 8-9.

It is not a church service, it is a carol concert. The conductor was great, introducing instruments and how the carols tell a story and how the instrument work together.

It is more a classical one, not pop song or what is played in the radio so it depends a bit of what your child is used to hear.

Not sure if it is on again or if, it may be sold out, but we went with a group of friends to Cadogan Hall a year before and that was definitely aimed more for younger children. Their family concerts are great in general but tickets are snapped up very fast.

These concerts can be great to introduce children to the concept of a bigger concert and a lot are absolutely child friendly. When DD was 7 we ended up in one at the Royal Albert Hall, they happily encouraged children to sing along and nobody said anything, most adults were in a happy mood.

We try a proper grown up classical one this year, DD is 12. Will be interesting.

We are not religious so apart from the school Christmas service we don’t go to any church service but a genuine carol concert is very different. And St. Martin in the Field is a beautiful venue.

This has reminded me of a thicko I once knew who told me that he and his family once went to Midnight Mass but didn’t enjoy it as it was ‘too religious’. Ffs! 🙄

Churches generally have a little kids service.

IdentifyasTired · 27/11/2019 10:45

I’m going to say something radical here but carol services and church services are not meant to be fun for children.
It’s a time for Christians to pray and worship and commune with one another. If you can’t understand or respect that then don’t go.
Not your faith, not your place.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/11/2019 11:16

Christingle is the specific service for little kids but again it is religious! They do love it though.
