Cool eco idea or naff Christmas fail?

Thought I'd try making some re-usable gift bags from scraps and unused fat quarters. These two are from a now-too-small Christmas jumper. What would you think if you received a gift in one? Would you re-use? I think I'll make a personalised re-usable gift tag for each recipent as well, but don't want to go to the effort if it's all a bit naff! Could do brown paper instead which is recyclable, but obviously not as good for the environment as using something I already have which can then be re-used as well.

I love them!

Ohyesiam · 21/11/2019 18:03

I think they’re great.
I saw a very odd thread earlier about how have made gifts are lazy. Obviously from one who has never made stuff. I spend hours ( and £££) making gorgeous individual presents for people. My husband is built like a rugby player and im making him a linen shirt for Christmas. it’s like grappling with a marquee! No way the lazy option.

Leflic · 21/11/2019 18:09

Fab. Not dissimilar to the stocking idea, so very apt.

KatnissMellark · 21/11/2019 18:09

Thanks for the positive responses!

By re-use I mean keep and use to 'wrap' a gift next year.

These will definitely be for adults/teen wrapping, with paper for little ones to RIP!

Based on your positive responses I've carried on and already made two more Smile

I did these last year op and will be doing again this year. They were well received. A couple of people gave them back to me. ( my dad and gran) but everyone else wanted to keep theirs. A couple said they’d be doing it this year.

LemonPrism · 21/11/2019 18:28

Great idea!!! Love it

LemonPrism · 21/11/2019 18:29

I would use h tbh rn every year and consider them a gift in themselves

livingthegoodlife · 21/11/2019 20:43

Really beautiful and v classy. I'd be delighted and would re-gift it the following year.

Deadringer · 21/11/2019 23:09

I hate the idea of homemade gifts, they are usually so naff, but they are lovely!

TheGirlWhoLived · 21/11/2019 23:11

You could Etsy those, and I’m not a natural Etsy-er

MamaWeasel · 22/11/2019 04:27

I love them! And the second ones you made - good old Aldi fat quarters!

AwkwardSquad · 22/11/2019 04:38

They’re great, I’d be very happy to receive those and would reuse.

Russell19 · 22/11/2019 05:05

@KatnissMellark love it. But how would the gift tag be reusable??

QueenWhatevs · 22/11/2019 05:37

I always reuse gift bags anyway, and yours are absolutely gorgeous. I would be loathe to part with them.

Its lovely to see beautiful crafting that reduces waste rather than causes it.

Aethelthryth · 22/11/2019 06:14

Great idea!

Veronicat · 22/11/2019 06:31

I love them! Id be thrilled to get a present in them (and had to Google what a fat quarter was).

PrivateSpidey · 22/11/2019 06:41

They're fab OP!!

KatnissMellark · 22/11/2019 11:00

@Russell19 I'll reuse if they give it back to me!

I hate homemade gifts but love this. Always reuse gift bags so would definitely use again.

Angelinthenightx · 22/11/2019 13:53

Aww they are cute, id reuse them for make up or kids little toys like lego or barbie clothes etc.

elQuintoConyo · 22/11/2019 14:10

I have made a stack of these for Christmas and birthdays, plus hemmed larger pieces of square/rectangular fabric and used wrapped presents tied up with ribbons. I think this year is the 5th year that some bags/wrappings will be used, my son loves seeing the same fabric every year - "this had my Lego Batcave in it last year.. I remember this from my trainset" etc.

However, i always get the wrappings back. For children oustide our family, i use paper (which i hate doing) but i don't have time to make a bunch of bags twice a year just to give away.

I have tiny bags for things like jewellery, Lego minifigures, novelty rubbers; and i have some felt envelopes to hold things like video games, books. Sooooo cheap, and with a bit of ribbon or some other embellishment, really cute.

Do carry on, OP, yours are lovely Xmas Smile

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 22/11/2019 14:12

Love them. I wish I was crafty like this.

But I've googled a 'fat quarter' and still don't quite understand what it is. I mean I get it's a square of fabric but then the page I found started talking about quilting and I was lost!
