Stocking fillers for fussy dh

Foxton20 · 20/11/2019 08:17

Dh is a “snob”. He knows what he likes...

He loves cheese, trains, vintage things, records, good books.

I have zero ideas. So far he’s got socks, an avocado chocolate from waitrose, a Christian fish leather bracelet, and a shirt.
Help 😩

Do you live anywhere near North Yorkshire? The Wensleydale Cheese factory has over 50 cheeses in their tasting room.

Foxton20 · 20/11/2019 08:24

No we don’t 😩 we were in Whitby this weekend and wanted to
Do it!

Are there any vintage train meal experience things near u? I know Cardiff does one in December where u get a meal and champagne etc. And it's a bit pricey, u dress up all posh and stuff. I imagine there's similar stuff in other areas.

jellybeanteaparty · 20/11/2019 08:30

Posh pork scratchings, head torch ?

HeyMicky · 20/11/2019 08:34

Slow watch - 24 hour face
Smart shave cream/beard oil (as applicable)
Leather micro wallet
Luggage tags

user1493494961 · 20/11/2019 08:35

I wouldn't bother with anything else, what you've got is fine.

MyDaisyField · 20/11/2019 08:37

I always get my dh a couple of nice Folio classic books. A footplate expediency on a nearby steam train? A nice print of something he enjoys?

A book
Socks
Chocolate
Satsuma
Nuts

That's it. And we joint-buy something for the house (new rug, new duvet, office desk etc, something we need).

Themazeoflife · 20/11/2019 09:06

A cheese advent calendar

Hornby train set accessories

Book voucher/amazon voucher if he has a kindle.

Themazeoflife · 20/11/2019 09:06

If he does not have a kindle could you get him one?

Fakeflowersaremynewnormal · 20/11/2019 09:08

I agree that sounds enough if he may not even like some of the things. I assume you are getting him a main present of his choice?

Wildorchidz · 20/11/2019 09:10

Why would a grown man, and a snob, want a stocking? Genuinely confused?

So am I.

WorldEndingFire · 20/11/2019 09:27

Godminster cheddar is heaven-sent. I like the smoked one but the black truffle one won the International Cheese Gold Medal this year so might be worth trying that: www.godminster.com/products/triple-cheddar-collection-round/

Notting Hill Editions make beautiful slim volumes that are good for stockings: www.nottinghilleditions.com/

Trains, you could get him a ticket on one of your nearby steam railways and have a picnic together.

Records - a personalised record divider might do the trick? Or a nice record holder depending on the size of the collection? Good high fidelity headphones for listening to his records on his own?

frenchknitting · 20/11/2019 09:30

This is slightly inexplicable to me, but was requested by my DH with similar tastes:

Also, everyone in my house gets a stocking too! Why wouldn't anyone want a stocking?

Foxton20 · 20/11/2019 09:31

He doesn’t, he doesn’t even want a gift but as we’ve had a pretty shit year I think he deserves something. I’m not doing a main gift, I just want to show him that we all appreciate him. He always puts us first and never himself.

You can buy personalized cheese knives that look classy. Maybe that with some fancy cheese and a good bottle of port? May I recommend m&s port decanter, it’s verrry tasty!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/11/2019 09:35

Does he like nice alcohol? Small bottle of a decent Single malt or port?

frenchknitting · 20/11/2019 09:35

Ooh, cross post with WorldEndingFire. Thanks for the record dividers idea, those would be perfect if my DH didn't alphabetise everything. Hmm...

pooopypants · 20/11/2019 09:46

An ebook reader or book voucher?

user1493494961 · 20/11/2019 10:46

The Literary Gift Company has different gifts depending on your DH's taste in books. A calendar or diary, you can get them on all manner of topics nowadays, chutney to go with his cheese.

BiddyPop · 20/11/2019 12:14

I was going to say a nice cheese knife or plate

Maybe some posh version of biscuits/crackers to enjoy with cheese? Or chutnies.

The M&S port is quite nice, and they do smaller sized bottles too. Which is useful if it is unlikely to all get drunk quickly enough. (We enjoy a good port at big family gatherings, but with only 2 of us here, a whole bottle of vintage would be a waste - but the M&S is good).

Or maybe a couple of different individual servings of different gins (& tonics?) or whiskeys - or a couple of Christmas/Winter beers or ales, as they can be quite special if DH is into craft beers at all. There are some shops that have a decent range (in Dublin, I would head to the Celtic Whiskey Shop on Dawson St for miniatures, and Deveneys' off-licence in Dundrum for Christmas beers - I am no good in the UK sorry).

I also sometimes get DH nice snacks to go with these - M&S are now doing some but I started getting them other places - Wasabi peas, dried broad beans, posh crisps or vegetable crisps - "grown up" snacks.

A nice metal bookmark for his book? Sometimes National Libraries or Galleries or Museums have interesting things in their gift shops that could be worth a look.

Foxton20 · 20/11/2019 12:19

Thank you all!

Iv found a nice board from the slate company, I’m going to get that, a cheese knife and some chutneys! We have “date nights” once a week with antipasti so it will be useful! X

Controversial but a cheese baker might be an option.

At most cheese counters you should be able to pick up flavoured crackers and teeny jars of things like fig chutney and quince jelly.

What about a nice wine to pair with the cheese? Which would also take up a decent chunk of stocking space?

This might be fun if he likes unusual words

Have a browse here for literary gifts and you might find something fun.

If he’s a snob, less gifts but better quality might be better appreciated than more and cheaper gifts.

Hercy · 21/11/2019 10:26

This cheese is AMAZING, a really creamy mature cheddar.

www.snowdoniacheese.co.uk/cheese/black-bomber/

Is in waxed packaging, so probably fine to put in a stocking?
