Choosing presents for teens that aren’t in their list!

My teens are very particular about what they like - not necessarily brands but style, and I don’t trust myself to choose things for them. They have given me lists with specific things they’d like. However, it doesn’t feel very exciting to just pick stuff off their lists and not get them any surprises. My 16 yr Old has for instance requested a new phone ( refurbished) and a specific pair of trainers. It wouldn’t leave much else in his budget. I can’t decide whether to buy the phone and trainers, or whether to get the phone and a few things I have chosen ( a go pro type thing, couple of funko pops and some fitness equipment). How closely do you follow your teens lists?

I always buy strictly to the list and DH insists on 'surprises' that they privately complain to me about - not ungratefully but just to say it;s a waste of money - they'd never wear X listen to Y etc. Although he does occasionally get it right, I think small novelty presents in a stocking are the place for surprises.

I would buy what they ask for .. they will use it .. as I have learnt through time buying what I want after kids telling me what they want ends up being given to charity or collecting dust 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes I think you are right. They are no fun at all!!

I would give a 16 year old the phone and the rest in cash with a few token gifts. Do they need a go pro if getting a phone?

He is a very keen skateboarder. If anything the go pro would stop him using his phone while doing tricks and maybe make it last longer!

Honestly I'd stick to the list. My mum didn't like my style as a teen or what I was into so she'dd give me some cash to buy stuff I wanted then she would wrap them up for Xmas along with some bits she chose. I think that's why I still buy myself a few bits Grin

I would stick to the list. And go off list for smaller stuff for the stocking.

I agree with @leeds2

I always get ds what he wants for his main present but then buy odds & ends he hasn't asked for as well. This year I've got or am getting pjs, toiletries, video game, gel pens, notebooks, a specialist book for his hobby.

I would stick to the list. Your DS knows the budget and has created his list accordingly putting items he really wants on it. Don't go rouge, he will end up disappointed.

A few cheap surprises in his stocking would be nice.

Stick to the list! I've bought a few cheap things like a Hedwig hot water bottle and Friends monopoly to make it more fun, but I've bought what they asked for mainly.
