What time do you eat Christmas dinner?

Or lunch?

Ours is always late, around 5-6pm, whether it's me, mum or MIL hosting, as it is if we eat Sunday roast. And every year I wish we had eaten earlier, like 1pm maybe, then cheese/crackers/nibbles in the evening...

How does your Christmas Day food pan out?

Biddypop I love the idea of a sweep Grin

Dementedswan · 17/11/2019 21:44

Those of you that eat about 1pm.... what time.do you get up? What time do you eat breakfast? I tend to wake my DC around 8pm because I'm usually up from 6am waiting for them to stir and cant wait any longer. Cup of tea in bed whilst they bring their stocking in to open. We then go downstairs and open Santa gifts. Have a play and we get dressed a round lunch time. I'll then pop the roast in the oven and prep veg. We have bacon sandwiches or eggs around lunch time . Then Christmas dinner is around 5pm.

Ragwort · 17/11/2019 21:46

Ideally I would like to get out for a walk after the turkey meal as I always eat too much, & it’s nice to get some fresh air, but the reality is we tend to eat about 2pm, Queens Speech at 3pm & then a general slump. Grin. Growing up we always ate around 7pm which was nice.

This year I am going to my parents for the Christmas meal for the first time in years (they are late 80s & I’ve been cooking for them most years) so I think we will eat later as they are very formal.

AliceLittle · 17/11/2019 21:56

8-9pm on Christmas Eve for the big feast which is perfect to send everyone to sleep. After salmon and eggs for breakfast it's just picking at cold meat buffet and lots of chocolate for the rest of the day.

Tractorgirlz · 17/11/2019 21:58

Try to aim for 1pm so we’ve got room for evening buffet! We don’t eat breakfast we just drink and prepare dinner.

RossPoldarkFan · 17/11/2019 22:04

About 5pm. We have picky bits such as cold meats or party bits like sausage rolls and other party food stuff at lunchtime whilst present opening. Originally that was a starter after presents but the main meal gradually got later. No-one eats in the evening after that.

CherryPavlova · 17/11/2019 22:04

Drinks, salmon and other hor d’oeuvre at friends after church so around 11:30am for about an hour then home to cook prepared lunch. Served around 2:30pm - 3pm.

SittingontheSidelines · 17/11/2019 22:06

@Dementedswan we aim for 12 30/1 00

DH puts turkey in about 3 30 am and the rest of us wake to the smell of turkey wafting up the stairs stocking opening usually starts around 6 30. No breakfast as such. Cereal toast if anyone wants it. Tea and biscuits treats from stockings.

Morning spent relaxing, greeting guests, laying table, chatting while DH cooks in kitchen, he likes to be left to do it alone but the early start means he's then free for the rest of the day.

After dinner presents from under the tree. We then eat left overs and goodies and cheese etc as and when we want too while playing board games and watching TV etc

Longdistance · 17/11/2019 22:16

2pmish. After a few 🥂 and some snacks whilst cooking, it ends up being on the table at 2 or thereafter.

It’s all very relaxed with dds showing off their gifts and making everyone laugh at their silly jokes.

We’re stuffed after dinner and sit like beached whales until pudding.

delilahbucket · 17/11/2019 22:19

2-3 ish. We have bacon butties in the morning and then there's always plenty of nibbles if anyone gets hungry in the interim.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 17/11/2019 22:27

Normal lunchtime - 12.30 - 1ish. Then we can relax in the afternoon and have turkey sandwiches for tea! I think I get up about 7am to put the turkey in. We don't have any special breakfast. Don't think I'd like to wait all day to have Christmas dinner...

Hadenoughofitall441 · 17/11/2019 23:15

Usually around 3 😁

Itstheprinciple · 18/11/2019 07:11

Around 2pm these days. It used to be more like 1pm as my nan liked to eat earlier (she would have had it at 12 so we compromised on 1pm!) Now she's no longer with us, we have settled on 2pm. Break for HM at 3pm and then dessert at some point when everyone feels like it. Then in the evening we have gasp picky bits (I know that is a hated phrase on here but it's what we've always called it and I can't change now!) of turkey, ham rolls, cheese, biscuits etc while we watch Christmas night TV.

FridalovesDiego · 18/11/2019 07:18

We eat early because we open presents after. I say early and we always aim to eat at 3ish. We frequently don't eat until 5 though. I like a late lunch though, with loads of booze while waiting

NoWordForFluffy · 18/11/2019 07:25

We actually eat the “Christmas” dinner on Christmas Eve and have a nice sit down and drinks afterwards. We then spend Christmas Day chilling out, playing with the dc, leaving the dc to play with their gifts, watching movies etc and we do a buffet style all day affair. It is THE BEST!!

We do this on the day itself, but with dinner on Boxing Day. And we love it! Xmas Grin

Sagradafamiliar · 18/11/2019 07:54

We have it closer to lunch. I'd be close to nodding off come 6 o'clock. I like to have everything washed up and leftovers foiled so I can relax for the evening, I don't like food smells in the house too late at night either (just realised that's quite weird!).

Tractorgirlz · 18/11/2019 08:02

Yes I like to get it ready for lunch time so I can relax for the afternoon/evening.

KatherineJaneway · 18/11/2019 08:09

Usually about 1pm. Couldn't eat later than that we'd be too hungry. We don't have a massive breakfast like some so are hungry by 1pm.

mummymayhem18 · 18/11/2019 08:44

I usually aim for around 1 - 1.30pm. We usually have a slice of saffron cake for breakfast. And then may pick on sausage rolls or the odd sweet whilst waiting for he Christmas dinner. If we get peckish in the evenings will put some crisps and nuts on the table. Sweets will already be in little bowls dotted around. Either turkey sandwiches, sausage rolls or cheese and crackers if we have room in the evening after a big Christmas lunch 🎄😋🎅🏼🤗

ohisntthisallfun · 18/11/2019 09:22

Bacon sandwiches and Buck's Fizz at 11.30ish (kids eat stocking chocolate beforehand!) then main meal at 5ish. Works really well for us and I've converted DH's family too! Loving hearing about others' traditions

homemadecommunistrussia · 19/11/2019 12:34

I always aim for 1 o'clock after which I can attempt 'enjoying christmas'
I have been to relatives who eat later and leave a whole hour between courses, it was torture.

Mumtobe193 · 19/11/2019 14:47

Between 2 and 3. We just have nibbles later in the evening, usually turkey sandwiches, cheese and crackers, sausage rolls etc.

Deelish75 · 19/11/2019 16:53

In the past we’ve done Christmas dinner quite late, about 5 and had a big fry up for breakfast and I haven’t really enjoyed it. Last year, we had a smaller breakfast, cereal, pastries and fruit and then had Christmas dinner at 1, we were finished by 2.30 then we watched the afternoon film which was The Jungle Book, it was a really nice and relaxed afternoon. In the evening we just had pizza followed by Christmas cake/Yuletide log. We all said that we enjoyed that more so that’s how we’re going to do it this year. We’ll have a big fry up breakfast on Boxing Day and a buffet for lunch.

Tailfeather · 19/11/2019 17:28

We have a big brunch and then Christmas feast at 3ish.

Ifonly86 · 19/11/2019 17:34

Party food at 12 for lunch, then main dinner at 4/5pm then back to party food and sweet treats all evening Blush
