He's SO hard to buy for, I usually just get socks and scarves etc but I want to make more of an effort this year.

He's 60. No hobbies. (quite depressed).

So far I've thought of a wallet ninja and a form card, but that's it.

All help appreciated

Lovely two hour to read heart warming book ‘The Man Who Planted Trees’
Lego set (architecture model?)
DVDs...Ealing comedies?

Be1atrix · 17/11/2019 18:02

He's impossible. I don't think he reads at all and would never do lego! He' buys movies from Sky.

My FiL is a nightmare to get things for too, in the past he's appreciated CDs of the Goon Show, TV DVD sets like Only Fool and Horses and Auf Weidersehen Pet. Since you know he actually watches movies how about a small hamper of popcorn, nut, other cinema type snacks?

Be1atrix · 18/11/2019 18:34

but of a desperate bump! thanks how comes for replying. :)

I'm having the same problem. For his birthday he asked for a jigsaw. And I bought a WHsmiths voucher to buy more jigsaws.

How about a magazine subscription? Or subscription to a cooking subs box like Hello fresh or simply cook ?

OhioOhioOhio · 18/11/2019 19:23

A hamper of pork pies.

Be1atrix · 18/11/2019 19:47

Food is a no go, so is booze. He's SO FUSSY. Thanks though!!

I find older men generally very hard to buy for as all the ones I know tend to be grumpy, have no hobbies, don't read and just grumble about younger people wasting money. My Dad has never liked anything I got him. He appreciates the gesture but I can tell he hates the item and they usually disappear....i think he just gives it away to people if he doent use it. Hes a man of few possessions and is generally very frugal.

The only thing I think he made use of was a back scratcher because it was genuinely useful and flexible heel balm! Sorry I know that's not helpful, maybe a gift voucher for your Dad? Cigars? Or an experience voucher like grand prix racing for a day or dinner at a restaurant? Also beer club or wine tasting evening could be good if he is into either drink.

Cleaner?

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 18/11/2019 20:03

What did he do as a job? Did he ever have any hobbies or activities he enjoyed? Would he like an activity like a concert, film at a luxury cinema, train journey, fancy car driving experience....?

Carrie76 · 18/11/2019 20:10

How about Now tv or a Netflix subscription? Depending on your budget does he have a tv in his room or cheap tablet to watch on in bed?

Carrie76 · 18/11/2019 20:10

Does he have a smart tv? You could get him a year of amazon prime and he could use it to access all their films etc

OhioOhioOhio · 18/11/2019 20:12

Photo book?

Frenchw1fe · 18/11/2019 20:15

@bionicnemonic
Ealing comedies?
He’s 60 not 90!

12goldstars · 18/11/2019 20:22

I always see who’s doing book signings in Waterstones/local bookshop and get a dedicated book. Something like a sport or music autobiography. If you’re not nearby then you can usually call the store and they send it.

Carrie76 · 18/11/2019 20:23

Just another thought we got my dad an amazon echo, was a random choice but he loves it!

bluerad · 18/11/2019 20:26

Theatre tickets, cinema card, phone case, bulbs to plant in the garden, kindle, tickets to sporting event?

OhioOhioOhio · 18/11/2019 20:33

An amazon echo is fun for even the most committed carmudgeon.

Junobug · 18/11/2019 20:35

I find my dad very similar. I now either take him out for a meal or pay for him and my mum to go out if I'm not going to see him for a while.
Or nice clothes?

PigletJohn · 18/11/2019 20:37

nice leather gloves?

nice leather wallet (but beware, some men I like a Breast Wallet and others like a Billfold.)

cashmere socks (black)?

DAB radio?

Slippers/wellies FFS?

Diy2019 · 18/11/2019 20:41

Does he have any grandkids?
My FIL is getting a personalised calendar with the kids photos this year. He actually uses a calendar and will love the photos.
My DF will be getting a canvas photo print as they are re decorating and putting up new photos.

A donation to the RNLI. You can buy fuel for a lifeboat or a piece of kit and you get a certificate with it along with a factual book from their site

YahBasic · 19/11/2019 10:39

Is he fairly active? If so, then a Fitbit or smart watch with GPS.

Ancestry DNA kit & subscription if he’s interested in family history.

Amazon Echo plus accessories - smart plug, lightbulbs etc.
