What are your 4 year old boys getting?

Really stuck for my 4 year old this year. I thought he'd be the easy one.

He's already got a lot of large plastic toys and a lot don't get played with that much. I find that things get played with loads at first but then he mostly gets bored of things.

So far we've got him a Lego box and some dinosaurs that you paint and some books

My 4 year old is getting a large plastic toy - not helpful I know! Smile He's getting Tracey Island. But he's nuts about Thunderbirds and I'm pretty sure it will get played with lots.
Other ideas...we have lots of wooden railway, hot wheels type cars and tracks, diggers/dumpers etc, Duplo, Lego, play food and kitchen stuff.
How about an outdoor toy? Bike, scooter, mud kitchen, trampoline, sandpit, playhouse?
Or an experience gift, something like a trip to Thomasland or Legoland?

Whitehorseinthehill · 16/11/2019 19:42

Thank you!

I didn't know that you could buy Tracey Island, gosh I can remember trying to make the Blue Peter one years ago.

We were looking at the hot wheels stuff today thinking of getting a set.

Tracey Island isn't for sale new at the moment, well not in Argos etc anyway. I think because the Thunderbirds reboot is a few years old now and the hype has died down the toys are not as popular. We picked one up second hand on Gum Tree. It will be a bugger to wrap Smile
Hot wheels are very popular here!

My 4 year old DTs are getting catboy and gecko pj masks costumes. Bean bags. And happyland pirate ship.

Lego basics and some base boards
Kinetic sand and play doh
The playmobil police station & car, he’s also getting the playmobil holiday house from a relative
Melissa and Doug stampers and paper
A galt marble run
A Spider-Man onesie for swimming
Hot wheels track to go with his garage (this was a big hit from his birthday)
A police bike

Now mine is getting older I’m trying to steer away from character toys and buy things that will be played with for longer and can be added to in the future like Lego, hot wheels and playmobil.

DS got Tracey Island too the Christmas when he was 4.Grin He loved it but I’m selling it now (he’s 7).
Playmobil lasts a long time.

Whitehorseinthehill · 17/11/2019 10:36

Thanks, I'm now thinking of getting him the hot wheels garage, it looks great.

He's got the playmobil police station and it's an absolutely brilliant toy. But like with a lot of the things he has he stops playing with it after a while.

I was looking at the Melissa and Doug toys they are so lovely aren't they?

More lego
A bike (his first ever one)
New pushchair for his doll
Roll of lining wallpaper and some colours
Books
Rugby kit (they don’t do a kids kit, so I have pulled some huge favours to get one made!)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/11/2019 10:47

A hot wheels track that folds into its own box.
Kinetic sand.
Bath bombs.

We are also getting him and his sister a Wii with games to share so they are both getting fewer individual gifts.

DS1 was never really into toys as he has never really done small world type play, but enjoyed Hot Wheels type cars for a long time. He would collect them, line them up, send them whizzing off tables and so on.

Does he have one of those rugs with a road layout on? Things to give his existing toys more life can be good. He could set up the police station on it and play with any cars, trains, people etc he has.

Does he have siblings to play with? It seems to be my observation that some children will only do imaginative play collaboratively - DS1 is very much like that. In that case if nobody is around to play it with him, he does better with toys like a marble run that can be built up in multiple configurations to test out, or kits he can do by himself once started up.

Role play also good at this age - play kitchen set/food, shop, tool kit, doctor's kit etc. And they can do this around you which is good if you want to do other things.

You could also look at Orchard Games as some simple board games are within reach.

BouquetOfRoses · 17/11/2019 14:16

Dressing up outfits
Jigsaws
Remote control car
Tea set
Superhero figures
Books
Scooter

Summerdays2014 · 17/11/2019 16:19

Please can you let me know what hot wheel sets you have/will be purchasing? My son is 4 just after Christmas so I’m looking for both sets of presents! I was thinking about hot wheels but a lot say they are for older kids? Thanks (and sorry for hijacking!)
I’ve getting mine a bike, a bat mobile car and figure, Lego (a mixed starter set and then a Batman and Spider-Man set) some games - orchard ones and the buckaroo, playskool transformers and books.

DelurkingAJ · 17/11/2019 16:25

DS2 (nearly 4) is having a bike, more Brio, a Lego Juniors set. He wants ‘a Ryder’ which I think means a Ryder figure to go with his Paw Patrol busy book.

Chilledout11 · 17/11/2019 16:31

Mine will be five but and I have a six year old. For birthdays and Christmas main things they loved were magic tracks (glow in the dark cars and track set)
Toy soldiers & army tanks etc. Anything police (Lego etc)
Lego Lego and more Lego Grin
Art stuff.
Imaginext stuff is a massive hit.
Build a bear teddies

Chilledout11 · 17/11/2019 16:32

Hot wheels are great too (We just have basic tracks)

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 17/11/2019 16:40

Playmobil carry along house
Some blind bags/small boxes of playmobil
Some more knights for his Castle
2 Djecco observation jigsaws (we already have some and he loves them)
Books
More wooden food for his kitchen/playhouse
Annual family membership of the local theme park which also has dinosaur models etc

NatureGal · 17/11/2019 20:06

My little boy has just turned 5 and is a huge not wheels fan. He has several track builder sets, garage and just got criss cross crash for his birthday which is great, works well with all his other sets too. Christmas will be bringing yet more play mobil, bits for his farm and the police boat along with Lego fire station and books, he loves Usborne lift the flap ones. Also getting a skateboard.
