Christmas Eve food

What do you all eat on Christmas Eve?
We've got the in laws coming, so needs to be a nice meal. They're staying till Boxing Day.
We'll be having Christmas dinner in the evening on Christmas Day, so lunch will be naice ham, crusty bread etc to leave space for dinner. But I'm stumped about Christmas Eve.
Needs to be easy (I'm not a great cook) and not take too much prep. 4 adults & 3 kids- no allergies.

My daughter suggested chicken nuggets...

We always have a simple buffet - homemade sausage rolls (made earlier so just whipped out of freezer and reheated), sandwiches ( according to taste but extra special such as roast beef and horseradish as well as our favourites like egg mayo but not too many either way), crisps, medjoul dates, etc. I lay it out, grab a drink and then announce that it’s ready, help yourself .... and I relax.

We do a lasagne made with tiny meatballs and mozzarella pearls in the tomato sauce. You don't need to make a bechamel sauce for it just sprinkle grated cheese on the top. It's a variation of Gennaro Contaldo's Christmas lasagne

LiquoricePickle · 16/11/2019 23:29

I do Delia's salmon and egg pie. Fish is traditional!

8Iris8 · 16/11/2019 23:47

We cook a side of salmon on Christmas Eve and have it with simple sides like quinoa and garlic kale. Usually a nice shop bought dessert and cheese too.

Tradition was always a chinese with my brother (and whichever girlfriend he had at the time 😅) at my Mums on Christmas eve. We have fallen out big style the last few years so unlikely. DH is a chef so works every Christmas Eve, first Christmas day with the entire day off this year though so we will have dinner - Not Turkey dans fans so we have a big strip of fillet done in the oven, lush - at home (DH myself 7 year old and 6 month old DDs) which will be lovely. I tried to get him in the spirit when he got home this evening after reading this thread but my suggestions of lobster supper and a retro prawn cocktail thrown in was met with a wet blanket so bit put out to be honest! All your Christmas Eve dinners sound lovely 😊

ChristinaMarlowe · 16/11/2019 23:48

dans?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Nousernameforme · 16/11/2019 23:51

We normally do a Chinese but this year I've pinched an idea off here and am doing a christmas eve afternoon tea. Not sure what's going into it at moment

Foghead · 17/11/2019 00:01

My dcs started us on a tradition of baked Camembert and baguette, with salad and chutneys.

managedmis · 17/11/2019 00:08

TrickyD

We do an "alpine" Christmas Eve supper, with pierrade, raclette and cheese fondue

^

Oooh, laverly oh la la Grin

These sound great

Melonheadmum1 · 17/11/2019 00:31

Inwood that sounds yummy what is the sauce ??? We always have roast beef and jacket potatoes so this would be good to change it up a bit . Thanks

BarbedBloom · 17/11/2019 00:59

We normally have Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve, but are hosting this year. We are either going for a takeaway or an M&S meal

PupsAndKittens · 17/11/2019 01:18

Ditto @ukgift2016 Wink

sawyersfishbiscuits · 17/11/2019 07:41

We always used to have a Christmas baguette from our local sandwich shop around lunch time.

This year we're planning pulled pork rolls, apple sauce and a Christmas Colin the caterpillar cake, with mulled wine.

mathanxiety · 17/11/2019 08:09

We always have a Christmas Eve family gift giving after dinner, which is after Christmas Eve Mass at 6 - so we eat about 8pm as Mass is always heaving and the children's choir sings.

I usually do lasagne, which I prep a few days in advance and then stick it into the oven to bake during the afternoon. I serve it with a big spinach salad, and a pie for dessert - chocolate or lemon meringue.

I would love fish but two of the DCs can't stand any fish, so that's out.

Two Christmases ago I knew I was coming down with flu or something very like it, and just about got Christmas together. One of the DDs suggested we buy a pizza for Christmas Eve, so we did, and that was actually lovely. We have a lovely independent pizzeria close by. No way would I have done Dominos.

We eat Christmas dinner in the early evening on Christmas Day, and I do a big breakfast lateish on Christmas morning, with sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, cinnamon rolls, coffee, OJ.

Usually we have some leftovers from Christmas Eve dinner for lunch if anyone feels like lunch - normally everyone is stuffed after breakfast.

MunchyMunchkin · 17/11/2019 09:27

My family have lasagne, salad and garlic bread. Nice and easy to pre make and then throw in the oven when you’re ready.
DH family have ham, mash, peas and parsley sauce.

Chilledout11 · 17/11/2019 09:32

We usually just have a normal dinner (during the day) and something like spring rolls, garlic bread, salad that evening.

Cherryrainbow · 17/11/2019 10:43

I was gunna do a buffet with some bits from Tesco m&s etc. It's only for me my son and other half but we tend to be grazers. Thinking 3 different party food things and just stuff like crisps, dips etc.

FrangipaniBlue · 17/11/2019 10:44

Takeaway in our house Grin

NaughtyLittleElf · 17/11/2019 16:33

We always have a very informal buffet, designed to provide lots of leftovers for fridge grazing in over the festive period, it's a key part of Christmas here.

Nothing fancy, cold cuts, pasta salads, various salads couscous etc. tomatoes, sushi, coleslaw, quiches, pork pie, scotch eggs, pickles, cocktail sausages, pringles, dips, nice bread, Christmas cake and cheeses for pudding. Party food basically.

Deelish75 · 17/11/2019 17:35

Fish, chips, and peas/beans. Mince pies and cream/ice cream for pudding.

WeirdCatLady · 17/11/2019 17:55

It’s DH’s birthday on a Christmas Eve so we always have fillet steak with various sides. Dessert is Birthday cake 🎂

Sn0tnose · 17/11/2019 20:32

We started off with a takeaway for the first few years, but now we bake mini cheese scones, cheese straws, hot sausage rolls, vol au vents, home made chicken goujons and dips and have a buffet while we watch a Christmas Carol. And left overs are perfect to add to Christmas Day tea.

Glitterybelle · 17/11/2019 22:14

Our tradition is christmas eve fry up in the morning then party food for dinner..cold meats like parma ham and chorizo slices... nice crusty... YUM! Always go to the pub for a pint to catch up with friends and this is so handy and nice to have afterwards

Hadenoughofitall441 · 17/11/2019 23:17

We usually have chinese, however usual Chinese shop is closed on a Tuesday and I’m yet to know if they are opening Christmas Eve as will be closed Christmas Day. If not will probs be an Indian or a quick trip to maccy D

ToTheRegimentIWishIWasThere · 18/11/2019 10:22

I think I'm going to do a chipotle chilli sort of thing, cook up in the morning, stick in the slow cooker and get some wraps and guacamole and sour cream etc and we can have burrito wrap things. And then its easy and done when we get back from church.
