How much do you spend on stockings and how much for the big present for small children?

£15-20 on older kids (19 & 22) stockings and £8-10 on younger (7 &10)

Main present varies hugely. Some years they don’t even get a main if there isn’t anything relevant. So one year ds got a few £30 larger imaginext sets and lots of smaller ones as his main- adding up to £120 but dd got a £120 main present.
Other years they’ve had larger item like dd got gymnastics bars that cost £350-400. I don’t really have a set amount in mind.
The older two get 2year Mobile phone contracts paid for them and then around £100 on presents.

Stocking- about £25-30. But includes a book.

Main present- depends what they want. Sometimes the main isn't the most expensive, it's just the thing they want most- it's been less than £5 before.
This year DD2 (6yo) it's likely to be £50ish
DD1 hasn't really asked for anything and will get a range of items.

£10-£15 on stockings, main present varies but usually around the £40-£50 mark.

Stocking fillers for us is basically a magazine and sweets! My kids dont like chocolate so I stuff their stockings with sweets so they have something to munch on over the Christmas period so I spend roughly between £10-£20 each on their stockings.
When my children were younger I probably only spent £40 on their main present.

Stockings are around £30

Main gifts around £250 this year if I can get a decent Black Friday deal on smart TVs.

Other gifts around £200 per child.

Everything comes in the stocking (santa sack)

Autumntoowet · 16/11/2019 11:26

I am lucky we don’t do stockings in my culture because I think in most (not all) occasions they are a waste of money and waste.
I think that maybe in the past all you got was your stocking and no other presents or maybe people got an orange in the stocking and then presents?
I am not judging people that do them or anything! I just feel for people that are a bit force to do it or end up buying tat for landfill.
Can you put fruit and treats in stockings or is this silly?
I just feel it is more was tute and pressure but as I said this is not something I grew up with so perhaps I am ignorant.

Around £20 each, just guessing as I pick things up throughout the year. Trying to make it useful and edible items only this year.

Lovemusic33 · 16/11/2019 15:42

Autumn I think putting fruit, nuts and other food items is a good idea. I hate the idea of buying plastic tat. I do usually buy trump cards but they get used a lot, the rest is mainly food, socks and soap.

wildhairdontcare · 16/11/2019 15:56

We definitely avoid stockings full of tat.

DD1 has a bath bomb, charging cable, body spray, Mac lipgloss, beauty blender and sweets.
DD2 bath bomb, kids next perfume x2, top model colouring book and pens, charging cable and sweets.
DS shower bar, deodorant, charging cable, power bank, playing cards and sweets

We probably spend £15-£20 on stocking presents then everything else goes under the tree. They may or may not get a 'main' present depending on what they want. We spend around £150-£200.

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 16/11/2019 16:24

Autumn as kids we always had an apple, a satsuma & a bag of gold coins in our stockings and I still do this for my kids.

They don't get plastic tat in them either this year DD has a necklace, a benefit brow pencil, a little ring holder, a new phone case, a contigo coffee cup & a Starbucks gift card, DS has a powerbank, thermal socks, a chillys water bottle & a keyring - cost has been around £50-60.

I’m not sure to be honest however I put stuff like pants and socks, gloves which are about £5 each, toiletries and crafty bits. I try and spend not too much.
Main present last year for dd2 was a kitchen at £60 from Asda. Will probably do a prank £20 this year with five or six other bits. Been looking round and waiting for the best price.
