Marble run for a 7yo girl?

DDs birthday is close to Christmas and I try to work out the presents in one go, so I don't end up buying her similar stuff. I have it pretty much sorted, but I just need something else for her bday. I'm planning on getting her a doll that she wants for Christmas, so don't want to go down that road and also I know some of her relatives are getting Lego Friends for her bday. I was having a scour around the internet for ideas and came across a glow in the dark marble run. She tends to get a lot of the same kinds of things from her huge family on both her bday and Christmas, I thought this would be something different for her. However, part of me saying 'yes, she will love it', the other is asking 'would a 7yo girl want this, or would they prefer a different type of present?' What do you all think?

Would you want her playing with it in the dark? Wouldn't that be when she is meant to be sleeping?
On the other hand presumably it works as a daytime one too.
If she likes stuff like that then go for it. My DDs liked marble run but never fully mastered constructing their own (combination of poor motor skills and poor problem solving).

I love a good marble run but if it's anything like the ones we've had, they knock over quite easily - using them in the dark might be a bit of a nightmare! Have a look at Gravitrax for a souped up marble run!

Is it the Galt one OP? It's really good and pretty robust.

DS still uses his and he's 9 - his friends seem to like it too and it usually gets set up when they come over.

Also dark early evenings in winter mean you can use the glow in the dark factor more often!

My DD liked her marble run, though tbh I thought it was a bit of a one-trick pony.
She played more with Lego (not just the 'friends' type stuff) k'nex (maybe when she was a bit older) and the Magnetix type of thing.

We had a marble run for a few years - it was a really popular toy with my kids and their friends. Make sure there are enough bits to really make some different runs (60+) and that the set includes more than one bit to start and end the run - so you can put down more than one marble at a time.

Galt marble run was one of my favourite toys as a kid. Have a look at Quadrilla wooden marble run, or Lidl tend to do their own version around this time of year too with lots of different sets.

My kids got a Galt marble run to share last year - DS was 8 and DD was 4. They both really enjoy playing with it & DS probably moreso than DD as he’s a better age for helping construct it. We got the super versionnrather than the glow in the dark just because the extra pieces mean more building possibilities.

I’ve heard gravitrax is supposed to be really good too. Like a marble run on a much smaller scale. You can customise it with add on accessories too.

lonerdottierebel · 12/11/2019 16:09

@PrivateSpidey Yeah, the Galt one. I was looking at the larger set with 60 pieces, and thought Galt would be good because I could buy extra sets to add to it, if she enjoys it. She doesn't have anything like this here which is why I thought it might be good. I'm feeling like it's still a possibility, although reading some of the comments, I'm wondering if it's more a boys thing. It's hard to know when it's a type of toy that you don't already have, as I don't have a reference point. She enjoys Lego, and has some Lego Friends, and she has some building blocks which come out every now and then, although if she had to choose one thing to play with she would choose her dolls or My Little Pony, etc. But she's already drowning in that kind of stuff and gets so much of it.

My children loved their marble run and it’s very popular with the children in our After School Club. I’m in my 50s and still love a go at Marble Run! 😉

tinyvulture · 12/11/2019 17:10

My 7 year old wouldn’t have any interest in it (she had one when she was little but my ex and I played with it much more than she did to be honest - it’s at his house now, but i’d be highly surprised if she ever gets it out) but then she just doesn’t like construction type toys, only like imaginative play really. Does your DD like building stuff?

rainbowstardrops · 12/11/2019 17:17

If your DD likes construction type things then why not?! Especially if it's a bit different to everything else that she has.
At my school breakfast club, we have a fairly basic set and it's always popular with both boys and girls. We have infant and junior so 4 - 11 year olds!

rainbowstardrops · 12/11/2019 17:18

Oh and glow in the dark Marble Run???!!!! I'd love it!!!!!

OhTheTastyNuts · 12/11/2019 17:38

We've had a couple of different marble runs and they've been popular with both boys and girls!

My 7 year old who has enjoyed a marble run for a while has asked for Boomtrix for christmas which is like a marble course that you have to set up then the marble bounces along the course...just another suggestion really

EstoLargo · 12/11/2019 21:12

My 8yo DD has asked for a gravitrax for Christmas. She likes imaginative play with soft toys but never been into baby dolls/babies/lol dolls etc. We have a traditional marble run which has been played with a lot over the past 4 years. I don’t think it’s a boy or girl thing tbh.
