Can anyone recommend board games (preferably educational) for a nearly 5 year old please? Looking for something a bit different too.

He already has the following:

Marble run
Orchard Toys games - has loads of these
Kerplunk
Mousetrap
Hungry Hippos
Jenga
Buckaroo

Not a board game as such, but my son loved Jumbalup at that age.

Google Smart Games or Think Fun games. We have the Little Red Riding Hood one and one called Camouflage.

Destination Animation Disney Pixar here its out of print so get it whilst Amazon still have a copy!! Fab little game and the Zoetropes you build as part of the game are gorgeous.

My just 5 year old likes junior monopoly and junior scrabble although he cheats a lot a scrabble. Grin

ritzbiscuits · 11/11/2019 22:13

Monopoly Junior - actually much quicker and less annoying than the main version!

My son also started with Labyrinth at 5.

Avebury · 11/11/2019 22:35

Uno - there is a Junior version or the old school very simple 'wot'
Pop up pirates
Connect 4
Twister
Shut the box
Beetle
Snakes and ladders
Perfection (or the modern equivalent)
Orchard toys games are all good
Pairs

Dobble

It’s a Card game rather than board game but a firm favourite of both my children aged 9 & 5.

WellTidy · 11/11/2019 22:36

Frustration
Operation
Guess who

Connect four would be my biggest recommendation for that age though

Sleepycat91 · 11/11/2019 22:53

My boys just turned 6 and got junior monopoly last year. He loves it, has done his maths wonders and he likes us all sat down together to play it

OytheBumbler · 11/11/2019 22:57

The Eye Found It games are quite good. We've got the Disney one, they're like a Where's Wally game but cooperative so everyone wins together.

MadameJosephine · 11/11/2019 22:59

Orchard games are great for young kids. There’s loads of them but my DD’sfavourites were probably bus stop, Pizza Pizza, pop to the shops, pigs in pants and whats the time Mr wolf

Camsie30 · 11/11/2019 23:02

Guess who is very popular in my house, also The Bus Stop Game, dominoes and matching pairs

Padfoot01 · 11/11/2019 23:11

Mine loved funny bunny

Equimum · 12/11/2019 06:44

Junior Monopoly
Double (card game)
Bugs In The kitchen
Guess Who

NannyR · 12/11/2019 06:47

Not board games but card games; the four year old I look after is obsessed with playing uno and dobble at the moment. I wouldn't bother buying the kids versions of these, the regular versions are fine for kids.

happytoday73 · 12/11/2019 06:52

Labrynth... By far the favourite in our house from 5-7.. Then junior monopoly

BlueEyedFloozy · 12/11/2019 08:13

Bugs in the kitchen (I love this one too 😁), Uno and Snakes and ladders were popular here from about that age.

Alakazam8 · 12/11/2019 09:22

Would second smart games or think fun games. Also Dobble which is good for all the family really and great for travelling too.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 12/11/2019 09:28

Definitely dobble. Perhaps story cubes. Have a look at cobra paw too. Labyrinth possibly. My ds2 played a decent game of Carcassonne at that age though I think you can get a junior version, you can def get a my first catan. A lot of the popular board games do kid versions now if you have a good local proper board game shop. Rhino hero worth a look too.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/11/2019 09:33

Junior Scotland yard is fun.
Junior game of life- kids love it, I try to hide it!

Icklepickle101 · 12/11/2019 14:08

My nearly 4 year old loves frustration and it's been great to teach him about not winning every time!

ilovemykids5 · 12/11/2019 14:09

My 6 and 4 dd's love greedy granny. Bug's in the kitchen and soggy doggy.

FreeButtonBee · 12/11/2019 14:17

labyrinth junior is really good

EwDavid · 12/11/2019 14:44

Outfoxed. We got it for dd's 5th birthday and she's been obsessed with it ever since. It's a great co-op game, not too long and nice and simple to learn. I can't recommend it enough.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 12/11/2019 17:03

My DD (5) loves

Soggy Doggy
Operation
The Tooth Fairy Game
Orchard Toys Games (especially Pigs in Pants and Pop to the Shops)
Don't Step in it

ben1676 · 12/11/2019 17:35

I'd second Outfoxed. Because it's a cooperative game everybody works together and you get none of the tears from the losing child and don't have to worry about losing on purpose.

Another game we like is super rhino. You have to stack cards to build a tower and try to balance the rhino on top. Good for small fingers but also fun for adults.
