Hi there, @Guccigal321 - we're just bumping this and hopefully someone will be along soon to offer their thoughts.

I always say a Christmas list is a list of suggestions and not a list of demands so I wouldn't buy everything anyway even if they weren't expensive. I'd buy even fewer if they were expensive.

RoseMartha · 15/11/2019 23:00

Think about how much you usually spend and what you can afford this year and are happy to spend.

A list means things she would like, it doesn't mean you have to get it all.

Have you family members or friends who gave to her who could join forces to give something on her list?

Guccigal321 · 17/11/2019 22:38

Ahh rightio thanks a lot I'll cut it down abit (a lot) then try and spread the more reasonable ideas around granny's and aunties.

My parents used to get me to write my list , then re write and re write until it was much smaller... I still wouldn’t get all of it but they had a good idea about my top wants by then.

I am planning on doing the same with my son , I will save through the year but he will have a set value of what we can afford ... and it will need to stay in budget ...

My nephew who is 12 years often wants a fair each pretty sure my brother and sister I. Law spend a lot well to me anyhow but even they cut it off at a point .. he has to save up for some of the things he wants with money from family and pocket money ... he is really learning the value of money and is a very good saver ...

SleepingStandingUp · 17/11/2019 22:48

Well it depends what you can afford. If I earned 100k it would be a bigger budget than a 20k budget.

What is a reasonable amount for you

RomaineCalm · 17/11/2019 22:53

At 16yrs I would hope that DC would have a vague idea of what things cost and what, as a family, it might be reasonable to ask for.

Can you speak to her and ask what's most important or set a rough budget. It doesn't really matter what others spend on Christmas, she needs to understand whether your approximate budget is £5 or £5000.

Guccigal321 · 19/11/2019 19:28

Thanks everyone she's away writing it again with prices labelled on it this time aha.

DD (15 last Christmas) gave me a list of make up that she thought would be good as stocking fillers. When I went to buy the cheapest item was $40 (over twenty pounds) so I did buy a couple of things on the list but they were certainly not stocking fillers!

lovelyupnorth · 21/11/2019 07:02

@SnowsInWater $40 dollars more like £35 now.

We’ve always had a £100 per child for Christmas since they where born now 18/17

yikesanotherbooboo · 21/11/2019 07:06

A list is for ideas or suggestions, not demands. Your DD is old enough to know what is right here.
Please don't spend more than you want to though.

Cherryrainbow · 21/11/2019 07:58

As others have said you don't need to get everything on the list. I would get them to put stars next to their top 5/top 10 or something.

My son knows if he ticks every page of the smyths catalogue he's not getting the store 😂

BlueOooChristmas · 21/11/2019 10:27

Our kids are only little but we've always told them never to put more than 3 things on a list to Santa as anymore would be too much. They are also only suggestions. They've not questioned this yet but hopefully it carries over into their teens when they realise it's us buying it all! :) Your daughter is certainly old enough to understand so sit and have a chat and explain you just can't afford it all.
