Best alternatives to turkey?

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/11/2019 09:53

I've never liked it and don't want it this year, so please hit me all the alternatives you've tried and enjoyed. Only has to serve three adults and two children so doesn't need to be massive.

Thanks in advance!

Goose. Always goose.

The roasties made in the fat are to die for! And you get enough to last half the year after as well.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/11/2019 10:03

What does goose taste like please?

It’s not as bland as turkey. A bit gamier but still fairly subtle.

It’s a good choice. Not as much meat as a turkey but loads of space for stuffing.

Duck might be nice too if stuffing isn’t a huge priority. Lovely roasties and you can pair it with some interesting flavours

Goose is delicious. Or a gallantine with a mix of say, turkey, duck and pheasant?

One year I went totally off piste and did a seafood lunch. Huge platter of cracked crab, oysters, eel, prawns, mackerel, salmon to start. Lobster thermidor main. It was fantastic, and felt as christmassy as a bird, which surprised me. It looked so over the top and opulent as well.

This year, DH wants gammon (bleurgh) so I'll do that alongside a smaller bird. You win some you lose some Grin

Parsley65 · 10/11/2019 12:16

Another recommendation for goose from me!
It's a bit like duck; rich, dark meat with lots of flavour.
There won't be lots of leftovers, but you do get plenty of fat to make delicious roast potatoes.

TiceCream · 10/11/2019 12:22

Oh I love goose! Or even pheasant. I’ve never understood why we have turkey, it’s horrible. If it was that nice we’d eat it all year round!

lotsofstripes · 10/11/2019 12:25

Yes I agree with goose! We’re a family who like leftovers and having cold meats and christmas dinner sandwiches (best bit!!!) the next day so when we do goose I do a small chicken alongside it. Also that way if the kids don’t fancy goose they can have some chicken instead Smile

Something vegetarian. Opt out of the mass slaughter for a year - you might enjoy it.

reluctantbrit · 10/11/2019 15:33

Capon
Wild Boar
Duck
Goose (not my favourite, can be fatty)
Guniea fowl

quirkychick · 10/11/2019 15:37

Organic chicken
Pheasant
Guinea fowl
Pork with crackling
Roast beef
Lamb

Not a fan of turkey, either. Dp doesn't like game, do we usually have something else.

TheGirlWhoLived · 10/11/2019 15:38

Chocolate

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 10/11/2019 16:13

We dont like Turkey so usually get a large free range chicken

Although love rib of beef - kids dont

Or pork belly slow cooked with crackling- eldest then has salmon as only meat he eats is chicken

koshkat · 10/11/2019 16:23

Chocolate Grin

Clutterbugsmum · 10/11/2019 16:27

We normally have a fore rib of beef. Either boned and rolled or still on the bone.

RedSheep73 · 10/11/2019 16:28

We usually just get a big chicken

Gatekeeper · 10/11/2019 16:31

Capon- much juicer and far more tasty than turkey

Cmagic7 · 10/11/2019 16:33

Goose or capon. Or, make a stuffed chicken ballotine wrapped in parma ham. It's not as hard as it might seem, takes up a lot less space in the oven, is really clean and easy to carve, and looks really pro.
Something like this:

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 10/11/2019 17:14

Last 2 years we have had a pork joint from M&S. Previous years we have had beef wellington (might be doing this again this year), guinea fowl and pheasant (wouldn't recommend), chicken and roast beef. Sometimes I do a turkey crown as well for people who like it, if we have guests. If it just us I wouldn't bother as DH and DC aren't keen and I'm not bothered. Tempted by 3 bird roast type affairs as well. Love the idea of salmon but does it go with the gravy and trimmings?

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/11/2019 17:26

Had to Google capons. Can you actually get them in the UK? Google suggests they're illegal?

crosstalk · 10/11/2019 17:56

Another one for goose (or was until I went vegetarian) but it is expensive. Goose fat can be stored for ages. My carnivorous family tend to go for beef.

A really well made nut roast with cranberry or tomato sauce ... potatoes carrots and brussel sprouts does me fine.

reluctantbrit · 10/11/2019 18:12

We got our capon from our local butcher. So far never a problem in the last years.

reluctantbrit · 10/11/2019 18:15

@Cmagic7 I just showed DH your suggestions and now we have Christmas Eve (we are Germans so need a fast but festive food on the 24th) sorted.

elQuintoConyo · 10/11/2019 18:17

Honey roast ham.

Or saltimboca, we skip the roast altogether.

AgeLikeWine · 10/11/2019 18:20

We are ABT at Christmas. Anything but Turkey Grin. We often have a beef rib on the bone or a leg of lamb. Goose is delicious.

VaguelySkeletal · 10/11/2019 18:52

We have a Guard of Honour: two racks of lamb ribs tied together and stuffed with a fruity vegetarian stuffing. They roast resting on a bed of stuffing, too. The stuffing doesn't need to be meaty, because lamb is fairly fatty already. So it caramelises and absorbs the juices from the roast and tastes seriously, decadently delicious.
