What would be a nice £30ish gift to receive from your daughter that loves you very much and is fed up of giving you marmalade and biscuits that you very graciously pretend to to love?

Bonus points for gift ideas for your slightly churlish older husband who's retired and has no hobbies other than the Masons.

The most expensive hiking socks she can find.

Walnutwhipster · 10/11/2019 11:51

DH is a Mason. What about Masonic cufflinks or a waistcoat & bowtie with their symbols on. There's loads of Masonic gifts you can buy.

marezeedotes · 10/11/2019 11:52

These are brilliant ideas, thank you very much.

I am painfully aware that marmalade and biscuits are terrible gifts for a young, professional, interesting woman. I'm generally considered to be a fairly thoughtful and kind person, but I think I was born without whatever gene it is that allows one to identify suitable gifts for loved ones. DH has had similarly awful offerings in the past.

Thanks to you lot I'm going to smash it this year, though.

I agree with something personalised.

My DD tracked down the specific, hard to find, variety of cheap radox bath foam I love. It meant much more to me than her spending £40 at Jo Malone.

My own mother mentioned a specific type of necklace she was looking for so I tracked one down on Etsy because she isn't very tech savvy.

When it's your own mother I think you should trust your instincts about what she would like!

jazzandh · 10/11/2019 11:52

A magazine subscription.

sandgrown · 10/11/2019 12:09

I am older than your mum. My kids ask me to make a list of the sort of things I would like . They sometimes laugh at my suggestions. Last year I requested some mini secateurs for dead heading plants, a new foot pump for my tyres , a swimming bag for the gym, a notebook and a nice eye cream. They also buy me books and tickets for festivals/ concerts and afternoon teas . One year they were skint after buying houses so I just asked for their time to help me decorate. This year I would like some pencil cypress trees.

ArabellaPilkington · 10/11/2019 12:11

I'm 52 and not a fan of afternoon tea. Not into all the sweet stuff. I'd rather have a boozy pub lunch Grin

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 10/11/2019 12:22

I'm always a grateful recipient of cookery books, plants (so long as they fit my garden's colour scheme), plant pots esp the classy hand-thrown variety, chocolate, expensive bubble bath and most types of booze. Oh, and really classy soap (Roger & Gallet, L'Occitane). A photo album would be good this year, preferably one with a nice design on the front. Afternoon tea would go down well.

DH is bloody hard to buy for. He has most of the hobby-related kit he needs. The DC keep asking me for ideas for him and actually this thread has focused my mind. A guide book for next year's holiday location and his own bloody sponge bag, so he can stop nicking one of mine.

PermanentTemporary · 10/11/2019 12:29

2 tickets to a decent play locally easily done at £30 if you're organised about booking.

Mothership4two · 10/11/2019 12:30

I think the differing views on here show you OP that it's best to get something dm would actually want particular to her

AgeLikeWine · 10/11/2019 12:34

Wine for me, please. I like big, old-world reds.

Whisky for DP, please. He likes Islay malts.

mindproject · 10/11/2019 12:36

I'm nearly 50 and I would appreciate items for my hobbies - so a gorgeous box filled with buttons, lace, ribbons, or a selection of beautiful papers, stamps or craft items.

Or, a lovely little box filled with bath bombs.

Or, some Too Faced makeup.

Or, a box full of all the most amazing patterned socks you can find.

Justapatchofgrass · 10/11/2019 13:01

Patterned socks? For whom?

Murinae · 10/11/2019 13:41

I‘m an early 50s woman with two adult daughters. I also like afternoon teas in nice cafes/restaurants. Our local vineyard does an amazing one. I also love going to the theatre so theatre tickets or vouchers would be great. Anything that involves spending nice quality time with my daughters is welcome. Wouldn‘t want an experience voucher and I have enough „stuff”. Also anything I actually want I just buy myself. Kids also know to buy me a box of toffefee. Husband is happy with a box of licorice allsorts. Though this year he has asked for a new towelling dressing gown.

Murinae · 10/11/2019 13:42

Oh and a pair of socks with chickens on would be great but then I’m into chickens and I volunteer rehoming them from farms.

Murinae · 10/11/2019 13:45

When I cleared out my mils house I found many of my old Xmas presents to her in random cupboards never opened and never used

MIdgebabe · 10/11/2019 13:46

I do sound like I have a lot in common with your mum and would prefer the marmalade and biscuits to most of the suggestions here. Practical things that I need, I already have. Many other things are very person dependant . Scarfs , flavoured gins.

So you live close to your mum to see her most weeks?

afternoonspray · 10/11/2019 14:12

@mindproject - I would love to buy for you. I am not crafty at all but love all those decoative bits of ribbon, lace, buttons, ink stamps etc. Making up a box of that sort of thing would be such fun.

SoggySockRage · 10/11/2019 14:17

I've read the word gin so many times it's lost all meaning...

Magazine subscription was popular with my mum, she got a Prima through the door once a month and loved it.

BlouseAndSkirt · 10/11/2019 14:19

I would also like an Art Pass
And a good tote bag, something fashionable / my style
The pyjamas from Seasalt with mackerel or boats on them

Could she do an Amazon Wish List?

IrmaFayLear · 10/11/2019 14:54

How about a Radio Times subscription for Dad? It's not something a lot of people buy any more (does anyone remember those leatherbound covers some people used to have for theirs?!), but has quite a lot to read in it, a good crossword and is at least useful!

I agree a nice tote bag, perhaps featuring somewhere she really likes.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/11/2019 18:12

My fav present ever was my boot jack.

Every day after I walk the dog I think of my mum as I take off my wellies so practical gifts are also appreciated

breakfastpizza · 10/11/2019 18:24

Tickets to a show or a day out we could go to together.

Ellmau · 10/11/2019 18:43

Whiskey for dad/stepdad? Plus book on the Masons if you think he might like it: www.amazon.co.uk/Freemasons-History-Worlds-Powerful-Society/dp/1611450101/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=history+masons&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1573411383&sr=8-1

Does mum read?

Cardy24 · 10/11/2019 18:57

Someone has already mentioned it up-thread but the Craft Gin subscription box is a lovely gift. I bought the October set, using a code from the referral thread, and it cost me £20. An absolute bargain considering the contents.
As soon as I received it I cancelled any further boxes being sent, they emailed me back straight away to confirm, so no problems there.
