How many presents in total do you think your kids get?

Been reading some threads in this topic which has made me think.

If you totalled up the number of gifts your primary aged child unwrapped on Christmas morning, how many gifts do you think it would be??

Stockings here have books, socks, some chocolate, a small toy/game, activity book sort of stuff, all from Santa.

Then, presents from us, and a present from my parents. Until last year, there would have also been a gift from their great grandmother. So, perhaps 5 wrapped things. If you include everything (so, the random box of chocolate from the friend down the street, a £5 from Uncle Bob etc etc) how many presents would you guess?

Mine get about 10 in their stockings then about 6-8 other gifts from me depending on cost.
One from aunt and uncle, one from gps.
Then one from dps mum.
Their dad may or may not get them a present, ditto their nan (his mum). Since we split up his aunt and uncle on dads side don’t buy them presents.
Compared to others they don’t get a lot but it’s enough and they’re grateful for what they do get.

QueefLatifah · 10/11/2019 10:13

Probably around 30-35 including family gifts then a stocking

Equimum · 10/11/2019 12:22

Including stockings, our probably get around 30
8-10 stocking fillers
3-4 from us
1 Santa
1-2 my mum
3-4 in-laws
1 each from 4 x aunts/uncles
1 each from 3 sets of Godparents

These vary a lot in size, and if we were buying cheaper gifts, the pile might be bigger. This year, though, ours are having bikes from Santa, so only getting a. Couple of extra things from us.

Some of the gifts from others are also just £5 token presents - a book etc. The only biggish gifts from others are usually a ‘main present’ from each set of grandparents, and one £20ish gift from one of their uncles.

ysmaem · 10/11/2019 12:34

Both my boys are getting around 23 each for me (santa) and they'll get maybe 3 from my mum, 3 from my dad, 1 from great grandmother, 1 from OH's parents, a few from aunts and uncles. So that's around 33 gifts each at my house. They'll have gifts from Santa and family at their fathers house too. I know my ex doesn't buy as much as I do (I'm a a bit of a christmas nut) so maybe 15 from santa each there and a few from family. My guess they'll have over 50 gifts each to open Christmas morning which when you write it out like that sounds absolutely ridiculous! They really don't need that much but there we go

WhereverIMayRoam · 10/11/2019 12:46

12 to 15 from us/Santa. I count stockings as one though rather than each item as an individual present as we just put small inexpensive items in - edibles, hair clips, gel pens, book light etc.

My parents will either buy them a gift or give cash or a voucher and they’ll probably get cash/voucher from 3 sets of aunts and uncles.

mummyof2boys30 · 10/11/2019 16:27

Too many tho defo getting smaller as they get that wee bit older.
Prob about 10-15 from us,
Playstation plus off granda
Money off nanny (unless they ask for something)
Money off other Granda
Granny - usually books and money
Aunt - book or clothes normally
Uncle - money
Most of their presents to open are from 'Santa'plus stocking though its normally things like sweets, pringles etc.

OctoberLovers · 10/11/2019 16:38

Have a look at cheap shops that do things like, depending on age, "arts and crafts bits" "smellies" "chocolates, sweets, games etc.

Christmas is about spending time together, snuggle up, Christmas movie, games, and having a relaxing time

GleamInYourEyes · 10/11/2019 16:43

7 presents from us (including clothes, books, games etc)
1 present from Santa
1 stocking (unwrapped pants/socks, chocs, bath stuff)

1 present from my parents
1 each from two sets of aunt/uncles
3 or 4 presents from PIL
Money from great grandparents

So maybe 15 things in total? But only half are toys - the rest are books and clothes.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 10/11/2019 16:46

We follow the something you want, something you need, something to wear and something to read approach. DD (9) gets probably about 10 things from us, including those 4 plus a few stocking gifts. She gets money from my parents and sibling. She doesn’t get anything from DH’s —massive— family (Out of sight, out of mind for them).

tashakg89 · 10/11/2019 18:11

I'm actually shocked at the amount of present some kids get!
Obviously each to their own but wow.
my four and six year old only wanted train track I've had to really push for them to look at other toys. they'd be over the moon with just a couple each.

Emma362 · 10/11/2019 18:35

I have 7 items in their stockings plus some chocolates. Then 7 wrapped presents for under the tree from us. Then they will get gifts from about 5 other people, maybe 8 things to unwrap as some people will get more than one thing. They are past the toy phase really and as all 3 are close in age they share a lot. I've thought carefully about what to get this year and to cut out all the tat they won't touch after Boxing Day!

Brideof2020 · 10/11/2019 19:41

I think its difficult to say a number of presents from Santa, my 2 have the same amount of money, and I get as much as I can off their list within my budget. DC1 likes lego that's way more expensive than things DC2 has asked for.
They then have presents / money / vouchers from 6 aunts and uncles. No grandparents unfortunately.

Brideof2020 · 10/11/2019 19:43

Forgot to say I do a stocking usually with stationery type things and maybe a small gift.

GleamInYourEyes · 10/11/2019 19:50

I always think with these threads, where on earth do people put 30-50 new things per child??? I wouldn't be able to move around my house anymore Grin

PhantomErik · 10/11/2019 20:18

Stocking about 8
From Father Christmas 1
From us about 10
From Grandparents 3
From Aunties/Uncles 3
From friends of my DMum 2

So about 27

KTCluck · 10/11/2019 20:38

DD is getting

  • one big present from Santa that she’s asked for, plus a stocking with one small toy, pants and socks, hair clips, gloves, sticker book, crayons and some chocolate (unwrapped)
  • one big surprise toy from us (this year a second hand large sylvanian house packed with accessories and animals). It’s all getting bunged inside and a sheet of wrapping paper over the top.
  • two books, an outfit, cycle helmet, PJs and a jumper wrapped from us (we do the want, need, wear and read thing)
  • estimated between 6 and 12 parcels from aunts / great aunts
  • probably around 5-7 from my DM and DSF (will include clothes and PJs)
  • 1 each from both other sets of GPs
  • 3-4 from friends of the family.

So could be over 30 plus stocking. It’s a lot but as some of it will be clothes etc that she’d need anyway it’s not going to be too horrifying to find homes for praying no one goes big

MadameJosephine · 10/11/2019 20:52

Probably about 25-30 altogether from me and her grandparents but that’s including stocking fillers and at least 10 books. She’s just at the age where she’s starting to read by herself so I’m putting a little hamper of books together with a children’s dictionary to look up any hard words, a Matilda cushion and a Harry potter reading light.

My brother and his wife try to buy her an experience rather than stuff and they run a cake business so this year they are giving her ‘vouchers’ for baking lessons which she’ll be delighted with

Fueledwithfairydustandgin · 10/11/2019 22:40

I’d say DS5 probably gets at least 50 presents which sounds an insane amount written down. We probably get 5 in his stocking then 20 under the tree. Then 7 aunts and uncles buy between 1-3 gifts each (he’s the only child in the family), both sets of grandparents will buy 1 main present then probably about 5 smaller gifts
He always gets lots of outdoor things because we lead a really outdoorsy lifestyle. He also loves books and arts and crafts so I get quite a few bits and bobs then often bath toys. I also sometimes get some new clothes that I think he’d particularly like. So it’s not all actual toys.

aquamarine1 · 10/11/2019 22:51

Mine get about 5 each from us (Santa) plus a stocking, then about another 5 from family/friends.
For the posters talking about 30+ gifts, do the children not get overwhelmed? Mine wouldn't be able to enjoy any for the sheer volume.

wildhairdontcare · 10/11/2019 22:58

Stocking x5
Father Christmas x1
Us x 10
Grandparents x9 including money
Aunts and uncles x 6

So over 30 on average [santa]

wildhairdontcare · 10/11/2019 23:02

@aquamarine1 in some cases it will be money/voucher in a card so spent at a later date.

Of the 30 gifts perhaps 25 are physical presents to unwrap and of those perhaps 3 bath sets, 3 pyjamas, 1 underwear, 7 or 8 clothing etc.

NickMarlow · 10/11/2019 23:02

8 small things in their stockings (socks, hair clips, bubbles, chocolate coins etc)
3 presents from us
4 other presents under the tree
Maybe 7 others when we stay with both sets of grandparents later in the holidays?
So a stocking and 14 presents spread over 3 separate occasions. They're 18 months and 4, any more than that would be totally overwhelming.

Fueledwithfairydustandgin · 10/11/2019 23:08

No not really. When he was younger he wouldn’t open them all on Christmas Day but last year he did. I always got about that many and never felt overwhelmed. He doesn’t just go into a frenzy either. He opens them and plays with some as he goes then tends to sort them into 2 or 3 piles depending on how much he likes them Grin he never said what he was doing but it was obvious to us

thaegumathteth · 11/11/2019 00:18

Aside from traditional stocking things probably maybe 10ish from us? Maybe more the I'm not sure because we put proper presents in the stocking if that makes sense so it's more of a 'whatever fits' type of thing

Then
3 from aunties and uncles
3 from family friends
Gifts from each grandma (usually more than one gift including a second stocking which annoys me a bit but not enough to do anything about it because she means well)
3 from great aunts

Curious2468 · 11/11/2019 01:32

This year

From us:
1 bigger gift (£60)
Maybe 8-10 stocking filler type gifts that are too big for the stocking (so cheaper gifts £2-10ish)
Stocking with small gifts similar prices to above

Joint gifts:
I think 8ish. Board games, animation software etc

Family gift but also needed item of shared PC

Mine will get a few gifts of their only set of grandparents and a small gift from one aunt so not loads from other people.
I guess that’s 25ish presents each which sounds a lot but it’s mostly crafts, books and board games so lots to do together as a family rather than a load of toys to sit on a shelf
