Help! I’m participating in a charity gift exchange, and have been assigned a 5 year old boy who likes building and drawing. My DC aren’t this old yet, so I have no idea what boys this age are into. Any suggestions?

Mine loved marble run. Still does 2 years on. Is that too much though? What's the budget?

Some Lego Batman sets are suitable for that age. My 5 yo DS loves that kind of thing.

You can get activity books that have colouring, stickers etc (always cheap at the Book People or The Works) together with felt tips / pencils. DS loves them too.

My 5yr old is getting Lego, playmobil and knex for christmas. He absolutely loves playing with those.

I have a ds the same age and loves building and drawing. Twistables are his favourite. Sketch books. He loves Lego and cubes that he builds things with (they gave links on all four sides)
He also loves kinetic sand. Craft - pipes cleaners and wiggly eyes / pop poms little tube of glue feathers etc. I have a box of that stuff and he makes things from toilet roll holders etc. The Works have a lovely selection or any of the pound shops

Lego. What is the budget?

pingoose · 09/11/2019 07:24

Thanks! These are all great ideas. I looked at Lego the other day and came away more confused than when I started!
No real budget, only that it has to be delivered in a shoebox (for stacking and storage purposes?). I don’t think I’ll spend more than £20.

I'd get a small Lego kit and some colouring bits then (Batman / City are our preferred options). You'll get quite a bit for £20 if you go to The Works or somewhere like that for the crafty stuff.

Definitely Lego. Maybe just a starter pack with lots of different coloured bricks and some wheels. Then it doesnt matter if he already has some (can all go together) or has none as a starter kit means toy can build quite a lot on its own.

I wouldnt choose a specific set like "build this lego batman car" or whatever because once that car is built it's done, whereas with a starter set there are so many play options.

Debenhams have one called "bricks on a roll" which is £18

This type of set would go down well with DS (and might be able to be found under a tenner with a google search). Then drawing / colouring bits for the rest.

Lego
Play mobile
All art stuff, maybe a box of felt tips and craft stuff

Agree with any if the lego city sets. My ds has a few and can build them on his own. They come in small boxes so a couple would go in a shoe box.
Also colouring book and nice set of washable felt tips.
