If you had to pick 5 toys for a 6 month old...

What would you choose?
DS will be 6 months at Christmas and I’ve got him a wooden music box, Christmas Box and Baby’s First Christmas bauble, plus a pop up book of Twas the Night Before Christmas and the illustrated version of the first Harry Potter book. Clearly these are for the long term and I hope they will be used for years to come. It’s what I wanted to do to mark his first Christmas.
However - there are many friends and family members who have been asking what to get him and I just don’t know! We get things as and when he is ready so play gym, bouncer and play nest are all set, plus he was given lots of rattley and cuddly toys when he was born which have been steadily coming out the cupboard as he is more able to engage with them.
I don’t want a house full of unused items if I can avoid it so I would like to know what you all found the most well used and loved toys for your babies, maybe up to one year? And what was a waste of space and money?

Things with flashing lights, buttons to press, plays sounds. I found it useful way back when to have a look at the 9-12 month toys at that stage to get an idea of what the next stage would be and picked toys from there to see through to the 1st birthday.

VTech Baby Sort and Discover Drum - Multi-Coloured www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B019C7RG7G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_7cgXDbY32TRRD?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

This is one of our most played with toys from 6 months to around 18 months. Although my 3 year old often likes to “help” my 8 month old with it now and I’m sure enjoys it more than her!

troppibambini · 07/11/2019 18:30

@IToldYouIWasFreaky yes yes to those eggs like kiddy crack, mine were obsessed with them had to replace them about three times when the lost a top! Played with the, for ages and ages.

Youseethethingis · 07/11/2019 18:38

Thanks ladies, loads of ideas here! It’s so interesting that with the whole wide world of baby marketing out there, it all comes down to stacking cups, board books, eggs and building blocks. Simple is best!
We already have quite the collection of board books and also fairy tales etc for when he is a bit older but I’m on the look out for those fabric books with all the sensory pages. He loves the little one that came with his play gym.
A lot of these ideas I will probably keep in the tank for when he turns one in July. Already been thinking quality wooden toys, activity cubes etc. Basically I’m mentally reliving the highlights of my childhood Smile

My 9mo DD has loved lift the flap and pop-up books for quite a while now. There are some lovely
felt ones by Nosy Crow that stand up well to being pulled and yanked! And as others have said, stacking cups are a favourite here too. She also really likes her Hape wobbly penguin -

Definitely the eggs, they all adore them. The vtech push along walker, but I think you could get a wooden version with widen e blocks in it as they also love those.

mogtheexcellent · 07/11/2019 18:47

Dont forget boxes, wrapping paper and ribbons. Best presents ever for a 6 month old. Grin

Seriously my DD would have loved the Tony squeaky eggs. She still chastises me for never getting them.

17caterpillars1mouse · 07/11/2019 20:12

The tomy squeaky eggs
A xylophone
Bubble machine
Bath toys
That's not my... Book

Userzzzzz · 07/11/2019 21:08

For that age

  • the eggs
  • a sorting toy
  • stacking cups
  • stacking rings
  • a walker - the vtech one is good

Basically I’ve not added much to the other posters but it shows how popular the eggs are!

KTCluck · 07/11/2019 22:01

Ha, I read the OP and immediately thought stacking cups and the Tomy eggs. The eggs are so simple but I’ve yet to come across a child who doesn’t love them. DD stills plays with them at 2.5.

DD was around 9 months for her first Christmas and got a little soft-bodied doll which she loved. It was amazing how quickly she started rocking it and putting it under a blanket. Again, she still plays with it lots.

HelloDulling · 07/11/2019 22:07

Bath toys
A bucket and spade
Stacking cups.
Holztiger wooden animals are to die for, and you can build and build your collection.

I wanted those eggs, but neither of my DCs had them. I wonder why I never bought them.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 07/11/2019 22:11

Stacking cups and anything with slots and balls. Ds loved his helter skelter that you put balls in.

RachelEllenR · 07/11/2019 22:26

I thought eggs and stacking cups too. A bit young now but my children who are 6 and 4 still love this which one was given for her first birthday:

Board books
Clothes in next size up
Cute book ends
Toys aimed at 9 months plus
First chunky car or fire engine toy.

Elle7rose · 08/11/2019 01:23

We bought an Early Learning Centre Shape Sorting House last year (12 months) and it's still being played with now.

Sjl479 · 08/11/2019 04:16

Money towards whirli subscription (toy rental website)?

Hopeful16 · 08/11/2019 04:23

Our kids have loved the Oball range- cars in particular but also the ball itself. They allow little fingers to hold and play with ease.

Our range extended for DC2 and we now have a train, rocket and helicopter. Our eldest at almost 3 loves to play with them with her brother too.

Some great ideas here!!

Have you got an Aldi near you? Our local one has some amazing toys and I'm going to get some hungry caterpillar bits (as I loved it when I was little!!)

See attached link Smile

FierceMamaBear · 08/11/2019 08:49

A small ball
A bath toy
A rattle
An instrument
A car/ train

Honeybee85 · 08/11/2019 08:51

Teething toy
Lovely teddy bear
A new play mat
A pram toy
One of those soft baby books made of fabric

CottonSock · 08/11/2019 08:52

Mostly the above, but mine liked a little farm set, ball popper, and any toy where toys push down and pop up. V tech or fisher price probably

CottonSock · 08/11/2019 08:53

Oball are brilliant. Probably our best baby toy. Mine didn't play with the eggs much, although I liked them.

DarkLikeVader · 08/11/2019 10:09

I second the wooden animals idea, holztiger are lovely and both my children still enjoy playing with them at nearly three and seven!

whatsinthebagwhatcoulditbe · 08/11/2019 10:10

Another vote for the eggs, and my daughter loves this peg toy:
