Lighthearted thread, as I’m sure everyone is grateful for any gift they receive.

Just with Christmas coming up I’m wondering which gifts you are dreading getting (but know you’ll probably get)

Mine are the Lynx women gifts sets (hate it but seem to get it every year!)
Any Poundland creams as they seem to make my skin itchy and red
Anything Bayliss & Harding (I know there is another thread about that)
Cheap perfume that smells like paint stripper
Obvious second had gifts that the giver didn’t want for themselves (it’s usually something totally unrelated to the things you’re interested in)

One year my friend got me some unwrapped Poundland glitter body spray, not sure why as I’ve never worn the stuff and it was clear that it was in the back of her wardrobe from a while ago

Perfume & jewellery - unless they've done serious investigation work because otherwise it's too personal

Any kind of novelty gift - novelty books, decorations, etc. Go straight to charity.

Cheap toiletry sets.

I'd much rather just have a decently rated book which is £8 and would make me very happy

Did anyone see that clip about buying presents by Martin Lewis?

It's perfect for this thread.

In our friendship group we stopped buying presents a few years ago and even all agreed to stop doing cards this year because it's just a waste of money and more consumer tat.

Have agreed the same with my stepbrother this year - he doesn't have much money so seems silly to waste any of it on something I might not like anyway.

Now we only buy for grandparents, parents, each other and god-daughter (and DC when we have them). That's it.

Here it is:

Wheresmymojo

Brilliant and true. It should be compulsory viewing in between every fecking Xmas advert on tv😁

Thankfully my 'present family' is miniscule and I have never had any of the tat talked about on here. Never bought for cousins or every aunt or uncle and once I was old enough they stopped giving me any. I wouldn't expect anything more.

We need to stop listening to retailers telling us how someone's life will be 100% better for some bubble bath and body lotion in a fancy box when it's double the price it was pre Xmas. Gives me the rage.

StroppyWoman · 06/11/2019 15:12

Joke presents of any kind.
Whimsical tat with writing on it.

NameChange84 · 06/11/2019 15:16

Alcohol- I don't drink and neither does my immediate family.
Gluten containing food. I have Coeliac Disease.

sarahjamesonmn · 06/11/2019 15:40

I hate presents that you literally don't need. I'd rather get nothing than receive something without the thought/effort!

woodhill · 06/11/2019 16:02

Frero Roche chocolates, yuck

Not keen on cheap toiletries like B&H but love expensive makes like Elemis or Clarins, don't mind S&G

We are now quite discerning as a family with buying gifts

historysock · 06/11/2019 16:04

I must be quite easy to buy for because I love toiletries sets Bayliss and Harding included and I can't get enough scented candles/chocolates etc.

What I really hate is when my Mum (always my Mum) buys me clothes. Im picky about clothes and I like to buy my own-I love vouchers and surely they are easier-but don't pick things for me then get insulted that I never wear them. I have never and will never wear anything from the Maine range at Debenhams for example-so why persist with it for the last twenty years?!

MsMustDoBetter · 06/11/2019 16:07

Pre packaged sets of anything.

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 06/11/2019 16:11

Those silk/cotton "accessory" scarves - never wear them
Alcohol - I don't drink! And it's always fucking prosecco too

BikeRunSki · 06/11/2019 16:28

Clothes yes! I am a weird shape (very long back) and seemingly quite fussy about clothes. Last birthday, DM bought me a decent cashmere jumper (not a supermarket or high street brand). It fitted, kind of, in that it was oversize, but stopped about 2 inches above my belly button, and was not a style or colour I would ever wear.

wheresmymojo · 06/11/2019 16:28

This thread is a great example of the kind of crap we can stop buying and consuming without actually having any detriment on our day to day lives.

If you think even the crappiest tat has to be produced, shipped from China, sent by lorry to the shop, etc. It has an environmental impact with zero benefit.

Just to be shoved to the back of a drawer or end up sitting on the shelf of a charity shop or in landfill.

BikeRunSki · 06/11/2019 16:29

(It suits and fits her really well though!).

BonnyE · 06/11/2019 16:35

Bloody slippers. Mil obsessed with wearing them and assumes everyone else is too. I don't like them would rather wear thick socks. I've tried to very politely explain this but I get a new pair evey year. Sometimes two.

Lipperfromchipper · 06/11/2019 16:43

I don’t mind any gift as long as I know it had thought put into it to be honest, I hate random gifts that are not something I would like. Things that scream “I just got you this because I was cheap/in the sale/ first thing I saw.” Etc
But what I do hate are gifts of chocolates or wine off family...I mean I could buy them myself tbh
I like scented candles though.
I like body washes but not cream so anyone who truly knows me knows I don’t use ‘body creams’
I don’t mind a scarf...but not one that the person though “oh that’ll do” if it had my favorite colours, texture etc then I’m delighted!!

NameChange84 · 06/11/2019 16:46

@ItIsWhatItIsInnit Clinks unwanted bottle of Prosecco with you in solidarity

ellesworth · 06/11/2019 17:30

For my kids - cheap tat that inevetibly breaks in five minutes and obvious second hand gifts (I'm not averse to second hand but to be given something that is, to put it nicely, well loved is taking the piss).

For myself - fluffy pyjamas - i get too warm and struggle to breathe.
Flowery perfumes/toiletries.
High necked jumpers - I literally feel like theyre choking me.

wheresmymojo · 06/11/2019 17:31

Woodhill...do feel free to send your Feroro Rocher to me!

Can't spell it though apparently!

wheresmymojo · 06/11/2019 17:33

Every January me and my friends have a 'swap shop' where we take any unwanted presents (plus anything else we want to clear out).

Everyone takes stuff they don't want and can take away anything they would like.

Everything left over goes to charity.

Makes for a good night in once alcohol and snacks are added.

ellesworth · 06/11/2019 17:33

Oh, DH got me teabags last year. Fancy Teapig teabags right enough, but teabags a the same. "But you love tea!" Yes, but not tea that smells like Sugar Puffs (worst cereal in the world).
I appreciate we were strapped for cash and spent most on the kids, but even so.

woodhill · 06/11/2019 17:48

@wheresmymojo

Hopefully won't receive anySmile

I'm usually fussy about my spellings but not for those chocolates

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 06/11/2019 17:52

Anything obviously gifted, most hand made things, alcohol, toiletry sets and candles.

caringcarer · 06/11/2019 17:54

Scented candles, knickers are the worst - I like to pick my own, scarfs, gloves, calendars, nail sets, nighty, mugs and umbrellas. I like to pick my own things and every year my mil makes me a stocking i don't want. The only things I do like from it is Dove shower crème and Box of Maltesers. She is not very well off and I wish she would keep her money. I take rest to charity shop in Jan.

VanyaHargreeves · 06/11/2019 17:55

Oh @ellesworth a close person of mine has bought me a variety pack of herbal teas two years running and I hope they don't make it a hatrick as I've had to flog them on both times

The only herbal I drink is peppermint
