I am at a loss what to get her and family members are asking. So far, we are getting her a hamster.

She's obsessed with dogs are really wants one. It's the thing on her list, but at the moment we have explained to her it's not possible.

Do they do a pretend type dog that barks and walks and acts like a dog? You can get accessories for? Kind of like the cry babies you used to be able to get?

Or, when I was young you could get a game boy type thing with a computer dog you had to look after and give food too etc. Do those still exist?

Or something not dog related?

Look up Furreal dog .. but what about a vets playset? We have a tots town vets, but I have a DS and he's not into fiddly stuff ,but there maybe something a bit older like playmobil city life vets, depends if she's into fine detail yet. I'm sure they do larger sets too.

There are some nice vets sets Melissa and Doug do one, but really it's a doctors kit so depends if she has one already.

There is a range called littlest pet shop. It's all bits, but if your DD is into those little collectible type things, this might suit.

Ricekrispie22 · 04/11/2019 05:01

Yes you can still get Nintendogs www.game.co.uk/en/nintendo-3ds-coral-pink-with-nintendogs-cats-golden-retriever-155109

Furreal chatty Charlie is £13.49 (1/2 price) right now at Argos. Very good for the money, though do locate the off switch otherwise he barks away. Vet set would be good, as would the playmobil pet hotel which looks fab.

I wouldn’t get a pretend dog if she wants a real one unless she’s onboard with the idea, otherwise it could be very disappointing on Christmas morning if Santa has misunderstood her request.

Hi
We're in the same situation but we won't be getting a real dog anytime soon and she's aware of this. She has been asking for scoot the dog which is a pup that I think comes when it's called and has a lead, which apparently is most important. It was 37.99 on amazon which is a lot for it I think but I used the five pound off voucher which may still be going? I also got her the plan toys pet care set which comes with a carrier and some wooden dog food which I think she will love. Might give you some ideas.

I always wanted a dog and got various expensive animatronic toys as an alternative - they were a huge waste of money as I played with them once then they were forgotten about because they were clunky and quite boring. The modern alternatives don't look much better despite the advancements in tech. Nintendogs game might be an idea though, it's simple enough for a 4 year old.

Also, you really shouldn't give real pets as gifts, a hamster is a living being and I don't think most 4 year olds will be able to handle them adequately, let alone manage the care. No sensible person would get a dog for Christmas, a hamster is a bad idea for the same reasons. There are plenty of threads with gift ideas if you are feeling stuck, please don't give animals as gifts.

A hamster is a terrible pet for a small child. They’re nocturnal!!!

user1374384 · 04/11/2019 10:17

Hamsters generally run about whilst held and sleep all day. A guinea pig would be much better, but maybe not at Christmas.

The Leapfrog Rockit Twist is a cheap electronic gaming toy that has a tamagotchi style game on it. I think you can get add on pet packs too.

Stompythedinosaur · 04/11/2019 14:15

I wouldn't get a pet as a Christmas present. I don't think it is fair on the hamster.

17caterpillars1mouse · 04/11/2019 19:39

My 3 year 7 month old at Christmas is getting...

Several enchantimals
Some sylvanian families
Dinosaur jigsaw
Onsie
Box of books
Colouring book and scented Crayons

bringbackthesun · 04/11/2019 21:40

Some ideas (my DD is slightly older but things that have been popular over the last year or so...)

Lego (basic bricks, base plate, Lego Friends & City all loved)
Sylvanian Families
Personalised book
Fairy lights for bedroom
Mud kitchen for the garden
Little Live Pets (esp the bloody talking bird!!!)
Plan Toys animal care set/vets set
Polly Pocket
Skipping rope
Annual of whatever she’s into
Next size up jigsaw
Mi-mic Bluetooth microphone
Kids cookery book

Thanks so much for the dog suggestions. I can't believe the Nintendo dogs are still around- that brings back memories.

She knows she's not having a real dog, I have explained to her several times and she knows why.

Also to echo pp that a hamster is a rubbish pet - they are nocturnal and run about like arseholes all night long. Cue small child staring at an empty cafe for hours in the day and then being kept up at night.
Not only that they have a habit of squeezing through the smallest of holes and escaping to chew through wires, usually the most expensive they can find.
Guinea pigs might be a better bet? Bit bigger, out during the day, females are not aggressive.

Middledistancerunner · 04/11/2019 21:52

Also, remote controlled cars go down an absolute bomb at this age (they are my go-to for four-six year olds Grin)

NatureGal · 04/11/2019 23:15

My just turned 4 year old girl is getting the Playmobil hospital, ambulance and a few accessories to go with. A pomsies lumies thing, an Usborne lift the flap body book, and one of those models of a human body where you can take out the parts and put them back. She loves anything medical. She will get some bits and bobs in her stocking too.
