Ideas for 6 yo boy with SEN

I have a number of children of relatives and friends to buy for

One of their number is a little boy of 6 with mild LD/SEN is behind on his letters and numbers and reading etc

I would like it to be educational, but stealth educational Grin

He is also a bit behind his peers. With other boys they are quick to tell me about their interest Marvel, dinosaurs, whatever but this little boy is a really shy uncommunicative soul. Isn't quite at the LEGO stage, more younger toys.

I am of (the very much unspoken) opinion that they live in the shadow of their boisterous extremely spoiled sibling. When I asked what the children would like I got a list of suggestions for the sibling and an "oh anything" for him. It made my heart hurt a bit.

So I'd like to give him a bit of extra effort this year

Any ideas?

For stealth learning, take a look at Nessie Reading - it was built specifically for dyslexic children learning to read. My SEN six year old loves jigsaw puzzles, marble runs and anything physical. We are looking at a child-specific magazine subscription as something he will enjoy getting through the post (just starting to read and much prefers pictures to assist).

I’ve bought a similar aged child with SEN some Velcro brand blocks that you put together to make a model, they have different ones including a dinosaur and a robot. They’re on sale at the moment too so I picked up a couple for about £15!

@TheABC

Thanks I can suggest it to the parent but the child doesn't have a tablet.

I’m not sure they’re particularly educational but I thought they looked quite nice.

My 6 year old SEN (sensory processing and aversions, not on spectrum officially) loves jigsaws, the crafting subscription boxes (toucan and weekend boxes), kinetic sand (you can get some fab ones in themes), crafting, stamping, play doh, small world, dressing up, role play, and board games but traditional ones that make you think like connect 4 and guess who (which is now one side person and one side pet), and the kids Cluedo (who stole the chocolate cake). She'll play for hours with those.

I went with a robot Grin

I've got my 6 year old a Leapfrog Rockit Twist, it is a handheld electronic game toy with sensory buttons aimed at 4-10 year olds, and it has lots of educational letter/spelling/number games built in and fun games like a virtual pet. It has a very long battery life and can be charged by USB. It's only £35 on Amazon at the moment (alleged RRP is £50). It isn't a games console but a great travel toy for a child who doesn't have a tablet.
