My 2 children are after one of these but obviously they are pretty expensive! Has anyone ever seen these on a special offer? I’m guessing Black Friday may be a good time to buy?

I was going to get a lipped pan, heat up milk and stir in chocolate flakes for fancy hot chocolate. Are these frothers markedly better? I wouldn't use it for coffee. Thanks!

FoxBaseBeta · 03/11/2019 18:11

@buckeejit we've not actually tried normal hot chocolate in it! I think using the real chocolate flakes gives it an extra smooth (or velvet I suppose Grin)texture.
We already had a Lavazza milk frother for coffees but we're only using the Dualit now as it makes milk way frothier. I think it's the whisk element (which the velvetiser also has) that makes the difference.

NoNameIdeas · 03/11/2019 18:26

My DH surprised me with the Hotel Chocolat one and it is amazing! Definitely makes a better hot chocolate than the milk frother we had for the coffee machine. Have only used chocolate shavings in it though, love the salted caramel and mint ones. Not sure if you can use powder?

RustyParker · 03/11/2019 19:44

A velvetiser is out of my price range unfortunately but just looked at what I think a pp mentioned above from John Lewis www.johnlewis.com/lavazza-a-modo-mio-milkeasy-milk-frother/p3443499

As it is a milk frother rather than a velvetiser, would you add the chocolate shavings with the milk into the frother does anyone know?

FoxBaseBeta · 03/11/2019 20:04

@RustyParker this is the Dualit milk frother we have, it's basically identical to the velvetiser. www.johnlewis.com/dualit-milk-frother-black/p231706525

You just add milk, then pour in the chocolate shavings and switch on! We also have a Lavazza frother but the Dualit is far better for hot chocolate, it is a bit pricier though.

RustyParker · 03/11/2019 21:05

Thank you @FoxBaseBeta will investigate that! Smile

I would love a Velvetiser but I'd use it twice and probably put it in the cupboard .

My searches have brought up:

Ikea has a little double spout pan "Varmer" (dishwasher safe unlike the Velvetiser) , available in 0.5 and 0,8l . (£7/£10) and some little tumblers (£4.50/2)

Add a battery wand whisk thingy .
Charbonell chocolate

Downside is I'd have to do all the whisking and watching rather than let the Velvetiser get on with it though ....

Hello1290 · 03/11/2019 22:34

There were reviews on the John Lewis website saying the milk in the Dualit comes out lukewarm though - can anyone comment on the temperature please.

Candymay · 03/11/2019 23:52

I think this velvetiser will go on my Christmas list!

Mrsfussypants1 · 04/11/2019 06:53

I love our velvitizer, it has been in constant use since Christmas and if it broke I'd replace it in a heartbeat. It's easy to use just add milk then flakes then 2 1/2 mins later hot chocolate at perfect temp. Also a doodle to clean. Haven't tried Christmas flavours yet, but I have just bought 2 more for presents.

Exp1etiveDeLighted · 04/11/2019 07:06

I've been wondering about the velvetiser but don't want to have to buy HC pouches, is it ok with other chocolates shavings/granules whatever?

buckeejit · 12/11/2019 09:14

I'm going to try to investigate if there's any difference in the HC machine & the dualit own - does anyone know already?

On the Christmas thread someone said even employees don't get discount on velvetiser. Fingers crossed for some other discounts for the hot choc boxes

WaningGibbous · 12/11/2019 09:25

Aldi also had a dupe out last year.

I have one, when we got it last year there was about 6 months of constant use. The kids aren't fussy so used Cadburys powder, I favour Green and Blacks. It feels easier for them to use than the microwave or a saucepan however it is small and only does one small (for me) cup at a time so you need to factor that in. It's been on the side all year and now the weather has turned is getting used again.

Butterflycookie · 12/11/2019 19:13

I wanted to get one but it has mixed reviews. Also it can only make one cup ( a small one) at a time so I’m thinking what’s the point Hmm. And apparently it doesn’t come out hot?

Janus · 12/11/2019 19:23

I see HC have it with 2 cups for £99. I’m going into the shop tomorrow and will ask if it gets reduced in their Black Friday thing they do (I wonder if they’ll tell me?!). I bought lots on that day last year as happened to be in the store on that day but didn’t notice this last year. My kids would love it too, it looks a good investment, am very tempted!

buckeejit · 12/11/2019 23:28

No codes work for any discount & I don't think they will. I have just ordered it.

Dh will be surprised, (he's not that big a fan of hot choc! 😂). Hopefully a nice big box to wrap for under the tree & ds & I will like it anyway so that's the main thing!

BeaLola · 13/11/2019 00:16

I have commented on another thread about this as buying for DH after trying recently instore.

It was drinkable straight after making therefore not scalding hot - this is one of the reasons I like it.

As far as store staff went they said it will not be on Black Friday offers - whether they are correct i don't know but they did say its th eonly thing they cant use their staff discount on

HollyBollyBooBoo · 13/11/2019 04:35

If you're new to QVC you get £5 off any order and the velvetiser can be paid for in 3 x £33 instalments if that's any help?

Mummyilovejokes1 · 13/11/2019 06:26

I love mine , its a recent addition to our house as is the HC chocolate vodka liquer 😋 which i use in the hot choc sometimes!
It makes perfect hot choc, exactly how i imagine it would do and wanted it to! The flakes are a luxury and i am sure you can use other brands of flakes in it, i will probably try once i have finished with the box that came with it.
It currently comes with a 1 year guarantee and a voucher for a free box of hot choc when you purchase your second box online, so 2 for 1.

Nearlyadoctor · 13/11/2019 06:33

We bought one last year as a house warming gift to ourselves and have used it loads. Dd 12 finds the HC sachets too chocolatey so I just use 2 spoonfuls of the normal Cadbury hot choc powder in it for her.
I wondered if it would be a 2 minute wonder but it’s been well used.

FridalovesDiego · 13/11/2019 06:40

99 quid! It’s like that Harry Enfield sketch.. something to fill the empty hole? We used to buy these from Mammoth hypermarket on our French exchange trips in the 80s.

seven201 · 13/11/2019 17:36

I got a velvetiser for Xmas last year. It's a bug disappointment. It just heats it up and sometimes there's a little bit of froth on the top. It tastes the same as when I do it in the microwave. I'd love a frothy hot chocolate but it doesn't do that for me. Am I using the wrong type of milk? Randomly it has a bit more froth if I put coffee granules in instead of hot chocolate!
