Presents for car journey

Hi,

This year we will be doing a lot of driving around the country to visit various relatives.

It is the first time we have ever been anywhere other than our own house over Christmas.

I want to get the kids (4 and 7) some presents which will help keep them entertained in the car.

Any ideas?

could you get them a lap tray - you can get ones from wilko with a Lego board attached. maybe that with a box of bricks to share?

how about games? something like top trumps.

if you are ok with technology mine love their Nintendo 2DS consoles and have had since around 4/5. can pick up v reasonable second hand. I paid around £20 each with a game. then can get cheap games from CEX. when fully charged they last ages! if you need game recommendations let me know!

Sticker books or dot to dot books occupied mine for ages at that age. dd2 had one with dolls and clothes stickers she spent hours doing it!

We rely on audiobooks as DD gets car sick if she looks at anything on her lap.

My dad is 8 and loving her dad’s old personal cd walkman with audio books. Her 6yo brother wants one too. They had audio books in car before but they love having their own, with cool headphones too

I find audio books and podcasts good for long car journeys.

My children enjoyed these magnetic books. www.crafts4kids.co.uk/traditional-toys-games/magnetic-games/janod-boys-costumes-magneti-book There’s a whole range of them with different topics.
Your eldest might like the scratch art kits www.crafts4kids.co.uk/alex-toys-scra-fitti-so-cool There’s a girly version too!
The Usborne Look and Find series kept them busy for ages usborne.com/browse-books/catalogue/subject/1/PZ/PBSTS/searches-and-things-to-spot/
My DD used to do french knitting on long journeys and she started at about 7. I’ve seen a few kits in shops and online. She also had a really simple cross stitch kit.
Kanoodle Junior www.amazon.co.uk/Learning-Resources-Kanoodle-Jr-single/dp/B01N33PWCW?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 and Rush Hour Junior are also great.

I used to wrap up presents like a pass the parcel for my son when he was little. I would put in a task for him to do in between each layer before he could unwrap the next one - things like tell us a joke, sing a song, spot five red cars. He loved them.

Some great suggestions. Thanks!

I make up little 'party bag' style packages for my children on long car journeys. I include sweets, kinder eggs, bouncing putty, a drink, small toys from the pound shop.
