Would that be ok do you think?

He's got into flavoured lattes recently and was wondering if it would be appropriate to get him one. He 15, turning 16 in middle January.

For me it would depend on the cost of the pod things - is it coverable with pocket money/PT wages or would you replenish them as and when?
I'd thought about one for my much older DS but I think he might look at me a bit Halloween Confused if I got him one for Christmas.

Terrible for the environment! Get him an aero press instead

We have a dolce gusto machine. Its brilliant, quite noisy but easy to use. Who would pay for the pods though?
We spend £10 a week on pods, plus flavouring syrup, but DH loves his coffee and dd loves her hot chocolate.

Get one which uses coffee bags (like tea bags, so biodegradable) rather than the metal pods. Much better for the environment.

Ours is this one:

If it’s your child and you’ll be supplying the pods etc crack on.

I wouldn’t want someone else buying my child a coffee machine at 15 )pud issue aside). I don’t think a coffee habit should be encouraged in children.

Yeah yeah - they could be doing much worse, I know, still isn’t something I encourage!

Maybe it’s just me and by all means get one but it seems unfair to make it his present when it’s really a household item.

Parsimon · 28/10/2019 20:17

We got one for ds, a little younger. Relatives get him nespresso vouchers for birthdays and he’ll buy five or six flavours and then we top it up with supermarket stuff.

I hate the environmental impact though and have ended up getting a super-expensive refillable capsule. I wish we had just got him an aero press.

Only if he is not one of those environment conscious teens (lots about these days, great IMO!)

Waffle or toastie maker? Popcorn maker?

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 28/10/2019 20:25

Obvious question - does he want it? If he does, sounds a good present.

My dd (same age) declined a birthday present, and has saved all her birthday money, to put towards a kitchenaid stand mixer. She’s just waiting for a good discount on it.

Sometimes teenagers like these slightly off piste presents.

We have one and I have to admit, it never gets used as I can't justify the price of the pods all the time!! £4 odd for 8 pods.. and they go like the wind!! Doesn't seem expensive but I just can't justify it all the time!

trickofthetail1 · 29/10/2019 09:11

I would also suggest an aeropress with some bottles of flavoured syrups.

Inthemoment38 · 29/10/2019 10:14

Lovely idea and a really grown up gift but please don't... The environmental impact of those pods is so bad even the inventor of them has been saying in the media he wishes he didn't invent them. Most teens I know these days are environmentally savvy and wouldn't like that amount of waste plastic anyway.

How about going old school and getting him a coffee grinder, beans and cafetière? I remember my bro getting these for himself at about 15 and he still grinds and makes lovely coffee now in his 30s.
