I know I sound ignorant Smile but I’m looking for an iPod like thing that my 9 year old can download music and audio books on himself, using credit in the form of vouchers given as Christmas and birthday presents.
He has an Amazon kindle fire - can that be set so that he can download himself? But only with the limited amount on a voucher?
Does what I’m looking for exist?

You can buy music on Amazon and have that on your kindle. So you could set up an account and if you have Prime you can set it up as part of your family. Then you could load up Amazon Credit on to his account.

Other than that, as much as I hate Apple, you are probably best with an ipod (something like a 2nd hand nano would be fine) set up an apple account and you can load itunes vouchers on and he can buy using the credit. You could possibly also use an old iphone but don't put a sim card in? Not techy enough to know if that's possible but sure someone will know.

Ah that’s really helpful. Thank you. He has an old MP3 player that was mine once but I have to transfer from my computer and never do it as I find it too tricky.
Interesting that I can create a separate account just for ds on his amazon kindle - I do have Prime and don’t think I’m getting my money’s worth as I don’t know how to do these things. And I hate not knowing.
But maybe a nice second hand iPod nano is the way to go for Christmas as I think the requested Switch is just going to cause more arguments.

I'm not brilliant with these things either to be honest. iTunes drives me insane! We've now converted all our CDs and on-line music into a format that we can put onto our android phones. Only DS2 has an iphone and uses his ipod so he mainly uses the itunes account. My DSs are both adult teenagers though so I tend to leave them to sort out these things themselves now.

Have you looked at Spotify/do you use it yourself? My DH has an account then added me for an extra £5 per month. It allows you to have up to 6 accounts, so you can add several children too. All for £15 per month and you then don't have to purchase music ever again?

You can then look at any device that will run the Spotify app.

Just checked, you can get Spotify app on the Amazon Fire no problem.

If you already have Prime then he has access to Prime music on his kindle. No need to bother with Spotify. You get access to thousands of songs free with your Prime membership but if you want unlimited access, all new releases etc, then you pay a monthly fee. I think just for his kindle would be £3.99. We have unlimited on multiple devices and stream through Alexa so that's £7.99 p/m

Just click the music button on the menu along the top of your Fire and it will get you started

Sorry, missed the bit about the vouchers. So yes, he would have the restricted version of Amazon music free with your Prime membership and then could buy music with vouchers on Amazon which would be saved to the prime music app for streaming or download

Thanks very much all. I guessed I might not being getting the best out of the amazon kindle fire. Will try it later. I do love it - he’s had it a few years now and I love the fact that when his time limit is up, that’s it.
I may still look at an iPod nano as he wanders around with a portable CD player and cds at the moment. Smile
