Overnight bags

What can I pack in an overnight bag and in what kind of bag, as a gift for someone.

So far I have written down,

Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Underwear
Socks

Tracksuit which could double up as pyjamas or separate pyjamas?

Emergency phone charger?

I was thinking perhaps a draw string bag, PE bag type but I don't think it would fit everything in.

Incase further information needed, my friend has older parents and she visits, as much as she can, sometimes unexpectedly needs to stay over for a night or two.

I was thinking of packing her an emergency bag, that could just live in the boot of her car until needed.

Unless everyone thinks it's a really rubbish idea.

Another thing I find is if I’m very tired (and stressed) I can get very cold. Either a cardigan (M&S have thin long ones for under £20), a thin fleece (Mountain Warehouse have cheap one and 20% off online this weekend) or a big scarf/ poncho as these can be used for warmth, pillows, blankets etc. Joules have this one with 30% off.

Will need a suitcase at this rate Grin

It's a mixture of hotels, hospitals and parents home.

I have also bought a travel kettle with cups.

Eye mask.Pashmina shawl handy if hanging around hospitals, can double up as a cardigan or blanket.earplugs??

Bobthefisherghoulswife · 28/10/2019 00:48

This is such a lovely thoughtful gift!
The only thing I would add that hasn't been suggested is perfume samples, those little 5ml bottles you can get from the beauty counters in Boots and John Lewis etc. I'd ask next time you're in shopping if they have any, usually they'll give you loads if you ask.

I now have

1 x bag - I actually found a small suitcase on wheels.
2 x leggings
2 x t shirts
3 x socks
2 x knickers
1 x Pyjamas
1 x tracksuit
Travel kettle, selection of teas (herbal and normal), Shower gel, deodorant, face wipes, foldable toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, body spray, lip balm, sanitary pads.

I still need to get a small purse and will add change, some cereal bars/breakfast biscuits.

Anything else I'm forgetting?

Do I add in a couple of alcoholic cans, the pre mixed ones or just a couple of bottles of water?

I would do normal shampoo, not the dry one. If she can shower at her parents she can wash her hair.

I absolutely hate dry shampoo, it is pure evil for my hair.

I would go for a small gym kit bag with a zip and at least one side pocket. Also, get a small toiletries bag for all the bits and pieces so she can take it with her to the bathroom instead of having her arms full with everything.

Charger bank and cable.

Perhaps a nice handcream - maybe L'Occitane's lavender one to help relaxing if it is stressful visitng and not knowing about needing to stay?

Or a pillow spray (Neals'Yard is one company that does it, and I know I;ve seen others).

A travel washbag (the clear ones with a zip you can get for airports) holding various minis -
Shampoo, conditioner
Nice shower gel (L'Occitane or Molton Browne?)
Deodorant
Facial wipes and moisturiser
Mini hair spray or gel or moulding mud?

Perhaps a face mask or eyemask?
I know one company (and I cant remember the name offhand sorry) does eyemasks in individual pouches in boxes of 4 or 8 - plain or lavender ones - so she could pop one in the bag and replenish when home again
And there are lots of different face masks in individual pouches now - could be nice to use if she needs to stay and be up late while they are settling or similar

Hairbrush
Pack of grips or bobbins if she has long hair that might need tying up
Hairband to keep it out of her face?

Shower cap (in case she doesn't have time to wash/dry hair)
There's something called "No Blow Dry" which is good for wet hair when you can't dry it - holds it in relatively ok shape

Pen, pencil, notebook (with tearable pages might be good for lists etc) and puzzle book (little sudoku or similar book to while away time)

Small hot water bottle or wheat bag

Hat and gloves and scarf and umbrella

Spare underwear and socks
Comfortable but practical PJs

Favourite tea bags (maybe fruit teas or similar for relaxing as well) or sachets of coffee or hot chocolate?
Portion packs of favourite biscuits or long-life snacks (might be useful to have breakfast bars etc for following morning travel back to work etc?)

Purse with change for parking meters, hospital vending machines, work vending machine for important coffee etc

Travel mug? To be able to have a hot tea in bed at night, or coffee on the road in the morning etc?

Refillable water bottle (and possibly something like Robinson's ultra small bottles of very concentrated squash to squeeze into it)

Small fleece blanket or comfy fleece jacket or cost cardigan to throw over whatever she;s been wearing for the day or to travel in early mornings/late nights

Loyalty card/gift card for a coffee shop local to her DPs house?

Nail file and plain (colourless) varnish and a tub of remover wipes

Spare tights in her usual colour

Small sewing kit

A book of short stories that might grab her attention and make her laugh when she needs to but won't need a lot of concentration

Sorry, a bit random there

BiddyPop · 29/10/2019 13:32

I also meant to add trial sized things - magazines often have sachets, or makeup counters - not just airport sized travel bottles.

Does she use sugar? THen a pack of sugar sachets, or a handful gathered from coffee shops, might also be useful.

Lip balm

Emergency sanpro?

Even if you don't give them to her, maybe suggest putting in some painkillers, meds for upset stomach and gut (like Motillium and Immodium), and some spare of any other meds she normally takes too.

Pyjamas?

Cath Kidston have some lovely overnight bags but they are a little on the pricey side.

I think it's a lovely idea btw, I'd be very moved if a friend did similar for me.

Themazeoflife · 08/11/2019 09:29

Quick update to say, I got everything and have now wrapped and placed each gift inside the cabin bag. Now I just need to work out how to wrap the cabin bag.
