Novelty tree presents

As a young girl, my great aunt used to put "tree presents" in her tree for us to find. They were utter tat, but brilliant and it was the best part of Christmas, laughing at each others fortune telling fish, or silly purse that broke as you opened it, always with a pound in.

That was for all of "us kids" which numbered around 12 (brothers sisters cousins). I think, looking back, it was so many children all together enjoying the silliness that felt so magical.

I want to recreate something this year as a throwback to this, but the recipients (who will all remember auntie's tree presents) are my immediate family.

So for, DS11, DM 60, DF 60, DH 40 and DNan80, what would you get?

So far I've got DM a little handbag diary with an ostrich on the front, and DS a little game where you wear a velcro headband and try and catch little fluffy balls that are flung at you.

I'm a bit stumped, I know I can't replicate how it was, but any suggestions to get a little of the magic and silliness, greatly received.

I'd say some funny paper masks...you know the little half-masks which are of different eyes? They'll give some laughs. Also nicer things like gloves, socks, compact mirrors. Party poppers.

Oh and see here.. www.partyrama.co.uk/christmas/christmas-noisemakers/ these are those little bangers you throw at the floor. They will generate memories and laughs. Plus your DS will probably love them

Deely boppers.
Christmas sparklers - like Bonfire Night ones, but safe to use indoors.
Notebooks made from Rhino poo - they usually have them in Oxfam.

Hawkins Bazaar might be your best bet!

We have a similar tradition. This year I'll be going to Amazon for keyring torches, multi tools, kitchen gadgets (e.g. veg spiraliser), favourite football team socks, mini storage tins, little decorative tins of tea, pretty cake cases/toppers etc for our budding Delia, "self tie" trainer laces, fans, mini adult colouring book, dog whistle for our budding Barbara Woodhouse, long key chains to attach to your belt, long scarves, notebooks, mini toiletries, packets of seeds, and more.

I hope that some of those give you some inspiration.

In our family we don't address these little tree parcels to anyone in particular, we put raffle tickets on them and treat them as a tombola where everyone wins a prize. An uncle will always end up with a floaty pink scarf while one of the children will be in possession of a dog whistle so at the end we can swap 'prizes' if we wish, which is quite entertaining in its own right!

The paper lasers look good... I've never heard of them before. Are there any high street shops that sell them?

Stick on moustaches are always appreciated in our house 🤣

Also the “grow your own...boyfriend, unicorn, etc....”

We are trying to cut down on tat this year (plastic tat) so will be looking for non plastic alternatives.
