I'm looking for a starter set. I know he'd love to try it and he's very good with crafty things. But all the starter sets I've found are too "girlish".
Is there anything neutral out there?
I'm particularly interested in those little knitting looms I used to have a child, can't find the name but it was a thing you'd wrap wool around with a hook at the top.

A knitting dolly? Or was that the one with just 4 pins that took 3 weeks to make what looked like a worm?

I'd go for 200g chunky or double chunky and some large gauge needles (6-9mm), that would make a scarf that would also grow quite quickly.

French knitting? Have a look at Barker Ross, they have loads on there.

Yeah I think you mean knitting dolls. They have them in Hobbycraft for £2 or so. But you can also get knitting looms in different shapes.

Toft do some lovely (but expensive) kits. This is a crochet footballer:

Or you could make your own ‘kit’ - buy wool and needles as pp suggested above, plus a pattern (you’ll find loads of free ones on Ravelry) then packaged it up in a nice tin.

The Works have a half price Harry Potter set:

Hope you find something he loves!

What about a sock monkey kit.

iklboo · 18/10/2019 10:25

What about a stamped cross stitch kit?

Enb76 · 18/10/2019 10:25

I got my daughter into embroidery about this age - there are some good, non gender specific kits out there. At 11 she's now creating her own designs.

Or, some of the sock creature kits are really fun. This is a dragon kit.

I was going to suggest crochet as there are some brilliant kits and books for making toys, including Star Wars characters and stuff like that.
There are also the fabulous My Boshi crocheted beanie hats (the company was started by two blokes), we've made loads of them.

This is cute but I think too young (my DD is 5 and has managed a punched felt kit with help)

I love this and will be bookmarking for when she's older!

Thank you! Yes it's French knitting, looking at the pictures that's what I had as a child.
Great ideas, and loads of options. Might go for a crochet thing too.

My son also really wants to learn how to knit!

ritzbiscuits · 19/10/2019 20:54

Don't go for a complex crochet toy set (like Harry Potter/Toft). It's complicated enough for an adult, let alone a child. I've made a number of crochet toys and that HP set looks hard for me!

To start, I'd look for a kids crochet book, a hook and a ball of wool. Something like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kids-Learn-Crochet-Lucinda-Guy/dp/1999963148/ref=mpssa112

https://www.amazon.co.uk/My-First-Crochet-Book-Learn/dp/1908707259/ref=mpssa111

Get the book and see what exact initial supplies are recommended re:hook size and yarn weight.

You could teach him to finger knit. That way he learns about tension and rows to make stocking stitch.
Then you could probably find a pair of thick bamboo needles for his first scarf.
My dad made a knitting dolly with an empty wooden bobbin and nails!
Pompoms are easy and fun, too. You could make a snowman from 2 pompoms and some felt.

Just a warning on the crochet kits from the works, my MIL ended up competing a couple of them and declared they were quite fiddly even for someone who's done plenty of crochet. Probably quite challenging for an 8 year old as a first option, especially if they are the sort of child who's invested in the results rather than the learning process.

Abibranning · 20/10/2019 13:04

This kit is really good and pretty easy to follow
