I have decided this year that I am not going to buy ANY items to wrap presents and will use things I already have. If any one wishes to join me I would love some more ideas.

So far i have....

1/ Reuseable fabric present bags for my children made a couple of years ago.

2/ wallpaper offcuts

3/ I plan to cut up some old clothes with pinking shears to use as fabric wraps.

4/ Pages from my calendar this year.

5/ Newspaper? Although not sure how to mske this look good.

I think newspaper looks great with ribbon - especially if it’s a broadsheet type newspaper (I know most of these aren’t broadsheEt size anymore). . I tend to use the financial pages with red ribbon. I also use the Financial Times - I do buy this occasionally at the weekend anyway and their financial pages look great with black velvet ribbon,
(I use fabric ribbon and hope the r3cipients save and reuse it - or sometime use paper/raffia ribbon which is recylable)

I wont be buying any paper but I have about three rolls of Christmas wrap left over from previous years plus numerous used gift bags to re use. I will also be cutting down on presents I am giving.

Years ago I bought some fabric bags and have been using them ever since for birthdays and christmas. They look great (they have strong colours) and 'wrapping' goes much faster. You could also make some from old clothes.

PlasticFreedom make a paper tape alternative to Sellotape.

For trimmings, I use hemp string & cinnamon sticks/bits of greenery

Whathappenedtothelego · 16/10/2019 21:32

I have always carefully peeled the sellotape off before carefully flattening wrapping paper to be used again - my mum always did it, so I have just carried on.
I have a big bag of old wrapping paper, some of it is years old and has been used multiple times.

I've used newspaper before and I think it looks very unique and different

I’m on an FB group called “plastic free Christmas”, where someone is making gift boxes out of last year’s Christmas cards.

BikeRunSki · 16/10/2019 21:39

I’ve started saving DD’s drawings for wrapping paper.

I’ve been holding on to tissue paper and brown paper from packages throughout the year. I’m going to shred the thick brown paper to make padding for hampers and packages.

I’ve wrapped in brown paper and butchers twine before with sprigs of rosemary, larch cones, cinnamon sticks and dried orange slices tucked in. They looked and smelled gorgeous but the oranges tended to leave a residue and the rosemary dried out and shredded needles Blush

AuntieStella · 16/10/2019 21:42

I save the paper from the previous year. And also things like tissue paper which sometimes comes in manufacturer's packaging

always have - it's a habit I picked up from my parents

@Honeywort I'm a ribbon keeper! Which has also sadly reminded me that the ribbon from my birthday flowers has probably been binned by my DP who did a huge clean for me today while I sat and cried over a bad parents evening. I still get to keep the jug though.

I had a very good friend who enjoyed making his own wrapping from old magazines and newspaper, all sorts. I miss his gifts. He made me a sort of teddy thing out of an old shirt of his he knew I loved but which had expired as a shirt. And his mum made him a huge quilt from old denim jeans he had stored up for years.
